OoC: You know, I actually hadn't thought about it... I guess they're just standard door-knob doors? If this were a temple or dungeon, I might do more traditional zelda doors, but these can be normal doors. Wooden reinforced with vertical steel bars at regular intervals.


IC:

As Orpheous opened up the door, the first thing everyone noticed was that the room was dark. Fortunately, there were no beady Garo Ninja eyes staring back at them - they appeared to be alone in the room. The second thing they noticed was that it was big; much larger than the previous room with the switches. The creak of the door echoed hollowly around the room as it swung open, once again giving the room a large feeling. Exactly how large was difficult to tell, courtesy of the first factor - the darkness. It was definitely longer, wider, and taller than both of the previous rooms. A few other things are readily noticeable from the dim light entering the room from behind them - a couple of tables and benches were scattered around the visible vicinity, with dirty dishes haphazardly strewn about the surface of those tables. Beyond the immediate circle of light emanating from the doorway they stood in, not much else was visible without close inspection. Regis took a small step further in to the room and peered inside, hoping to make out something more distinct in the darkness. [Awareness Check]

OoC: So that's Regis' action this turn; but I'll wait until the end of your turn to roll for everyone's actions. Also, have a quick mspaint map that I made of what you have explored so far:

As he looked into the dim room, Orpheous gathered his thoughts. "Well, I suppose this must be the mess room." His speech was vocally low. He wasn't whispering, but he didn't want to make too much noise either. "We can assume there is a kitchen attached to this room, or at least a room set aside to prepare the food at. There has to be torches in here too - they'd probably want it lit during mealtimes. I'm surprised these ruffians are so numerous; yet, the amount of seating I'm seeing already cannot be lying. It also show us that most, if not all, of the operatives are living here in a full-time capacity, as made evident by the remaining dirty dishes."

Pepper in the meanwhile, realized that she still had a working candle, so long as she lit it. Digging through her bag, she grabbed the wax candle and its holder, taking the time to set it up while she was still right next to the door for maximum lighting. Then she dug out her tinderbox. She sat on the ground to use it as a hard surface, finding the flint and iron by feel as she used her sight with the ground to steady herself as she sat. Once situated, she struck the flint to the iron again, repeatedly. Finally, she got a couple of sparks. The dried leaves in her tinderbox made for great kindling and soon the sparks had become a small flame. Again, bringing a twig around to catch it on fire, she brought the fire from the twig to the candle, lighting it [Light Candle].

She made sure the candle-holder was situated on the ground before turning back and killing the small flame in her tinderbox. Already having to use it twice in such close succession, she'd have to be on the lookout for more kindling. While she still had plenty of sticks left, her primary source of kindling, the dried leaves was starting to run out. But she figured most shredded material would probably work too. If worse came to worse, she could tear off a small piece of the Garo cloak and use it for kindling.

Orpheous was beginning to look about the room, attempting to see if he could determine the location of other torches. He didn't want Pepper to use too much of her candle if she didn't have to. Even if he couldn't visually spot a candle, he had plenty of experience adventuring, he had an architect's knack for getting a feel how things are laid out in rooms with specific purposes. He'd guess, for example, that the torches in this room would probably be in the corners. He also prepared his eyes for the dim light from the switch room to be supplemented by Pepper's brilliant flame. Still, he looked about, searching for torches, but just praying to find anything [Awareness Check].

As pepper brought her kindling up to the candle, the wick caught, providing a little extra light by which the group could see. It wasn't much, but the flickering flame of her candle proved to be just the extra boost they needed to find what they were looking for - Torches. As Regis peered into the inky darkness, he could just make out the shape of two tall braziers, one in each of the southern corners of the room.

"Well, for now, I think I can see two torches - one here and one here." he observed, pointing to the southwest and southeast corners of the room - which was now observed to be three times the width of the previous room.

Orpheous, because he had closed his eyes for a few moments while Pepper lit her candle, had adjusted very quickly to the change in lighting in the room. Not only was he able to see the two torches that Regis had just pointed out, but he could very dimly make out most of the rest of the room. The large dark shapes of more tables and benches filled the center of the room. To the northeast, there was some different looking shapes - a counter top, a large cauldron, and a hanging cast iron pot, among other things, indicating to Orpheous that this part of the room was indeed a kitchen. There was also another standing torch in the corner.

To the northwest, there was simply a few more tables, and a fourth torch in the corner - and a few feet away from it was a large pot, within which was a bundle of Deku Sticks. They looked like they had been modified a bit, with bristles on one of them for a makeshift broom, some scraps of cloth on another for a mop, and so on. But they could still certainly be used to light the braziers, and light up the room so they all could see as clearly as Orpheous.

"Pepper, you could probably use that candle to light these torches." Regis remarked, pointing the the small flame in her hands. "Although it might take some time to get both of them lit with just one source of fire. Too bad we don't have a mage among us - a fire spell would certainly come in handy here." He shrugged. "Any ideas, Orpheous?"

Orpheous replied to the eager Regis. "Actually, I think we can afford to spare Pepper some wax. I can make out a pot that looks to have some cleaning instruments in that northwest corner. While not ideal torches, they'll do fine to light the standing braziers around the room." He wasted no time, for as soon as he finished speaking, he jogged over to fetch three of those Deku Sticks turned into makeshift mops, brooms, ect. He brought them back over to the group. He gestured to Pepper with the one that looked to be a mop, implying that she should hold her candle out so he could light the tool.

Pepper did just that, holding out her candle to create a safe space for the new flame to start. Orpheous brought the mop to the flame, praying that the object would catch fire [Attempt to Light Makeshift Torch].

Pepper meanwhile continued to glance around the room. Know that Orpheous could make out at least the northwestern corner in detail, she assumed that the whole room might now be visible in her dim candle light. She peered the lengths of the walls of the room, looking for any doors apart from the one they had already entered through [Awareness Check].

OOC: When you think about it, it would be hard to light a brazier/torch with the small flame of a wax candle. Pepper knows that once Orpheous gets his torch lit, he'll give the other two implements to Regis and herself to make torches of their own, which they should be able to light from his fire. From there, they can fan out and light up the room. Of course, that's hoping that these makeshift cleaning items burn for long. Orpheous might have to use his bench leg idea after all. Anyway, sorry about the delay, and about the short reply, but there seemed little else to say in this post. I wanted to take it slow, and not take the mop lighting up as a given. Can't wait to see what happens next.

As Pepper held out her candle, Regis and Orpheous both applied their makeshift cleaning tools to the flame, hoping they would catch fire. The mop in Orpheous' hand seemed to still be a little damp, and it just sputtered a bit. Regis' broom, however, was composed of dry straw, which quickly caught fire, creating a bright blaze. Orpheous' deku stick lit soon after that, spurred on by the much larger flame in Regis' hands. Regis quickly moved to the southwest brazier and put his torch to the coals, which instantly leapt into flame, providing more light for the room - but given the room's size, it only provided a little bit of a boost to the overall light level. Only that quarter of the room received a hugely noticeable benefit from the new flames.

Pepper was able to take advantage of the new light, however, to notice a few additional things. There were three more door frames that she could make out in addition to the one they had entered from - one on each wall of the room. She could easily tell that the door in the western wall, which was closest to the lit torch, had vertical bars across it, at least temporarily preventing the party from going through it. The other two doors were still too enveloped in shadow to tell if they were blocked off or not.

"Awe, Regis, I was hoping to get some of those twigs from that broom for my kindling before we lit it on fire," Pepper exclaimed, disheartened but not genuinely mad or frustrated. "Oh well, maybe there's other kindling still in here." She blew out her own candle, stuffing it back into her bag carefully. She took one the third tool out of Orpheous hand without even thinking what it might be used for (a reference to the fact we don't know what it is), and held it next to the mop to make it catch fire [Attempt to Light Makeshift Torch].

Orpheous in turn was more concerned with their new tools. Having made impromptu torches before, he felt he should be able to gauge how long the objects could reasonable burn for before being entirely consumed. He looked at the flame consuming his mop, and did his best to figure out how much more use he was going to get out of it [Insight Check].

OOC: Once again, little actual action happening here. But with Pepper trying to light the third tool - whatever it may be - it would be rude for Orpheous to walk around to go light a brazier. He could have performed another awareness check, but the room is still dim as it is; it's better just to light it up. So instead, I had him try to figure out how many turns these fire sticks will last.

As Pepper grabbed a third Deku Stick from Orpheous' hands, she could tell that it was fashioned as a sort of duster - there were some feathers on the end that would make it easy to dust. However, it didn't look like it had been used in a while - who has time to dust anyway? Regardless, it easily lit, and should prove to be an efficient tool for lighting the remaining braziers.

Orpheous, having had some experience with makeshift tools before, knew that their current torches would probably remain lit for a minute or so - at least long enough to let them get the room lit up. However, Deku Sticks have a certain resiliency to them that allows them to be lit several times over. (((Going with a Wind Waker infinite-use form of Deku Stick as opposed to the Ocarina of Time one-use-only Deku Stick, for simplicity's sake))) The makeshift additions on the end would likely burn up quickly, but the sticks themselves would likely be easy to light again once the fire went out.

Regis, seeing the straws on the end of his stick beginning to dwindle, moved up to the north-west corner, in the kitchen area, and put the makeshift broom into the brazier there. After a few seconds, it lit as well, now causing the entire left side of the room to be illuminated. The party could now see that the northern door had an ornate lock on it. Everything else to the east section of the room was still somewhat dark.

Pepper took her duster and bounced along the room until she reached the southeastern brazier. She brought the burning feathers down into the torch, knowing very well that it would offer little resistance in lighting [Light Southeastern Brazier].

Orpheous, in turn, realizing he had little time left with his mop still alight, made a mad dash for the northeastern torch. He brought the burning stick to his target, making sure the fire was smoldering fiercely before he dared to pull away [Light Northeastern Brazier].

As Orpheous and Pepper held their Deku Sticks up to the torches, the coals inside quickly caught fire, finally illuminating the entire room with a sufficient amount of light for them all to see clearly.

There were a few obvious things that jumped out to the three of them now that they were able to see properly. First, as soon as the last torch was lit, the bars on the western door slid up, allowing passage through it. Second, they could see that the eastern door was also padlocked, although this was a much more simple looking lock than the one on the northern door. Third, there were several small pots lining the floor against the north wall. And fourth... well, the fourth thing they noticed wasn't actually something they could see, but was instead a sound. Only a few seconds after the torches lit and the bars on the west door were removed, a squeak echoed around the room. A brief moment passed and another squeak could be heard.

"Where is that coming from?" Regis muttered, looking around the room.

Squeak.

Regis' eyes narrowed. "Hold on... That sounds like..."

Squeak. Squeak. Squeaksqueaksqueak.

The sound intensified and became much more numerous, and the flapping of small wings could suddenly be heard as five keese descended from the ceiling towards the three of them, suddenly awakened by the light.

"Keese!" Regis said, drawing his swords.

Pepper smiled brightly as she saw the bars on the western door raise. But suddenly the Keese were upon them. As they swooped down, she exclaimed, "Keese! Keese attacking my face!" It was almost mock terror though, as she prepared her dagger to meet the swarm of bat-like foes. She found the lowest flying Keese and struck out against it with her blade [Attack - Deku Dagger at Keese 1].

Orpheous in turn, hoped that he would be spry enough to avoid the agile enemies. He brought his staff up, half to defend himself and half to ready for attacking himself. Seeing Pepper spring for her target, he focused his efforts on attacking the same Keese [Attack - Deku Staff at Keese 1].

OOC: Sorry about the short post, but I'm kind of multi-tasking right now, and I wasn't sure what else needed to be said. I hope you like it. I look forward to your reply.

Even though the Keese had appeared so suddenly, they were still Keese after all, and notoriously low on the Dangerous Creatures list. The three adventurers quickly and effectively took up the offensive.

Pepper's dagger, small though it may be, was expertly wielded by the Shiekah, and found it's mark perfectly. The blade cut across the annoying bat, dealing 7 damage to Keese 1. It hardly had time to recover before Orpheous' staff came sailing at it through the air, hitting the creature like a baseball bat, sending it across the room and against the far wall. It hung there for a moment against the wall before sliding down to the floor, dead as a door nail.

Regis leaped up at the Keese, spinning like a deadly top, blades slicing through the air. Both of his short swords caught Keese 2 and cut clean through the flying rodent, killing it instantly and causing the three separate pieces to tumble to the ground.

The remaining Keese retaliated quickly, each one targeting a different person. Keese 3 swooped down upon Pepper, hitting against the side of her head and dealing 4 damage. Likewise, Keese 4 made a full-body tackle at Orpheous, and though the scholar tried to move back, he ended up backing into a bench on the ground, leaving him no room to dodge the aerial assault. The creature slammed into him, also dealing 4 damage.

Regis, on the other hand, seemed to really be in the zone. As Keese 5 flew down at him, he nimbly ducked underneath it, letting the bat sail right past him.

Two of the creatures were down already... this was promising to be an easy battle.

Seeking retribution against the Keese that managed to strike her, Pepper flashed a fiendish smile. She swung her Deku dagger to hit the Keese that injured her. She looked over to Regis, not even fully focusing on the bat, as she brought her wooden blade to make contact [Attack - Deku Dagger at Keese 3]. "Nice cleave, Regis! We'll have them beat in no time!"

Reeling from the light attack, Orpheous tumbled on the bench he was backed into. He was falling to the ground, but he managed to use his staff to steady himself. Realizing that the best course of action would be just to attack the nearest foe, he brought his sights to rest on the Keese that had trapped him against the bench in the first place. I really ought to be more mindful of my surroundings. Proper observation and retention of information could have saved me from that mistake. Gripping his staff with both hands, he struck out with the end in the hopes to hit his flying foe [Attack - Deku Staff at Keese 4].

Pepper's dagger once again finds it's target, slashing through the air and hitting Keese 3 for 7 damage. "You're doing pretty good yourself!" Regis called back to her, responding to her compliment. Perhaps this was a small distraction, however, as the now angered Keese was once again able to dive against her with full-body tackle, dealing 4 damage to Pepper.

Orpheous was a quick learner. As his staff collided with Keese 4, not only did the creature sustain 12 damage, but he had now gained it's undivided attention. The Keese once again flew down to attack the scribe, but this time Orpheous was ready. Knowing full well that the bench was behind him, he squatted down next to it, as if cowering in fear - but at the last moment pulled away in a tucked roll, causing the keese to slam with full force right into the wooden bench. Not only did this prevent Orpheous from getting hit, but it actually caused the bat to take another 1 point of self-inflicted damage. (((It crit failed :D)))

Regis faced off against Keese 5. As the bat swooped in for the attack, the quick mercenary swatted at it with the flat of his blade, knocking the keese back in the air. In the same movement, he threw his other sword, and managed to hit the small monster straight on with the tip of the blade, pinning it to the wall. Between the two strikes, the creature had taken 20 damage - enough to kill it.

Regis retrieved his second sword and turned towards Pepper and Orpheous, and the two Keese they faced. The monsters were now the outnumbered ones.

Even after being battered by the Keese, Pepper gave a bright smile. It seemed that this battle was just the right amount of risky to excite her. She hadn't met that many opponents who could consistently hit her, but these Keese were not ones to be trifled with. They would have to be defeated before they could regroup. A claw from the Keese had left a small cut on the side of her face, not serious enough to leave any scar. Still, a line of blood trickled down her cheek, seeming to visually highlight that smile. Most people found combat exhilarating, but Orpheous couldn't think of the last time he saw somebody this happy while swinging a weapon.

Pepper noticed Orpheous and gave him a smart wink before tumbling her way over to him. "Orph, good work on these Keese. We should totally switch targets, you know, because you hit so hard," she gave him a friendly pat on the back. Orpheous gave a simple nod, moving to intercept Pepper's previous Keese. Pepper meanwhile readied her dagger and swung it at the target Orpheous had just been assaulting [Attack - Deku Dagger at Keese 4].

Orpheous had just reached the only other remaining Keese, and he brought up his staff to follow the movements of the foe. Waiting until it came near enough, he struck out with the tip of his staff again, springing forward with it before it reached the area of the target, where the attack once again took the form of a jab [Attack - Deku Staff at Keese 3].

Regis ran toward the two of them, intending to leap into the air and get in a swing at the last two Keese, but by the time he got there both were already nothing more than corpses on the ground. Pepper's Dagger and Orpheous' staff each found their mark, fatally wounding the two bats almost simultaneously.

Regis slowed to a halt and sheathed his swords, eyeing the pile of Keese bodies scattered around the room. "Somebody call animal control." He said with a grin, and looked over to Orpheous. "In any case, it looks like that western door over there is the only one we can go through at the moment - or we could backtrack to the one we skipped earlier. Or spend more time searching this one." He shrugged. "I'll leave that up to you."
