Sephiroth turned into a god because when the Planet wanted to heal the wound that Meteor caused, it used the Lifestream as the healer. Sephiroth knew this and combined with the Lifestream to turn into a god. Does that answer your question?
Yes at the center of the wound was Sephiroth, and the Lifestream would be gathering all it's Spirit Energy there to heal itself, but instead Sephiroth absorbed the energy and became a One Winged Angel. Look down to see it.
