So. Lame.
CLick for the details (http://www.adminfusion.com/forums/showthread.php?t=7711)
I bet ZU's founder is KICKING himself for giving the place up.
And I'll state my philosophy again: anyone who runs a fan site for profit is in the game for the wrong reasons.
Whew... that is pretty stupid. He sold it and the new owner changed it?
The original founder, Lars, sold it to this guy named Lee a few years ago. Now Lee is selling it himself, and apprently for a tidy profit. Zelda Universe is notorious in some circles for the fact that it's webspace is excessively dominated by adspace. You can guess pretty easily where the ownership's priorities are (though, not the webmasters, who work for Lee and are nice people).
Does all the money come from the adspace? (I have no clue how this stuff works.)
I cannot believe my eyes! I go there all the time! They are realy getting rid of it? I hope the new Admin will have a good will for the site. I liked it before, how can somebody just sell it? And i second jack's philosophy. I just dont ever want to see jacks name on that page :-[
I hope they dont change it to much it was a good site!
Well, it's not going away. Chances are, the owner will change and everything else will stay the same because it's a money maker if left to itself.
Apparently ZU makes 2-3 grand a month.
no way! I knew web sites cost money! But i dint know they MADE money! How much does TDC make per month? ;)
I say the same thing as TSA. Making profit of a FAN site is worse that site theft.
That's bad, a fan site should be for the fans. Not to sell out, and crowd the site with ads.
This is despicable. I agree with GF and Jack. Fan sites shouldn't be out there for profit. They should be there for fans who want to come together and talk about what they are fans of.
I mean, let's face it: if an administrator has a fan site for the sole purpose of making money, he/she doesn't truly care for the fans at all.
I'm grateful that Jack didn't stumble down that path. :)
To quote Yoda:
For once you stray down the dark path, forever will it dominate your destiny.
TDC "makes" about $20 a month. I use quotes because I like to think of TDC as a non-profit entity and all that money goes to hosting costs. If I ever make a "profit" I'd find a way to give it back to the fans through giveaways, contests, etc.
Like the Christmas Caption Constests?
Yes. But that contest actually came out of my pocket.
thats thoughtful! :D Anyways, its only natural that the sites profits go to the site itself. Why does ZU Make 2000? Is it because of more members or what? We have a whole bunch of members here. But most of them make a username to post little or nothing at all, and then they leave. That annoys me. And this site is perfect the way it is. i honestly cant think of many ways it could improve. I used to want a chatroom here, but then i realized the forums would be abandoned! :-* Its a win lose situation, and i think its smart how you deal with the stuff that comes your way. Sometimes i wish i was smart like that..
what happens at those? i'm new to this site
Jack has a special contest around Christmas. It's a normal Caption game, but the winner gets a prize.
Cool, that's quite thoughtful of you Jack! ;D
I think he made a mention of having some contest for a copy of Twilight Princess this fall. But don't hold me to that.
That would be pretty cool.
Yeah, once we're within a few months of TP's official release I'll have a contest for a pre-order with one day shipping so the winner gets the game the day it comes out!
ZU makes so much money because it has so many ads and so many people click them and get them money that way. **winkwink*) ;)
I suppose that kind of explains why you asked our opinion about the ads on your site...
But, hey! The less ads you have on a site, the more it helps with its layout. It's good TDC doesn't have that problem.
You can tell the Administrator has really lost the heart for it when they sell out like that.
your right. It must cost a pretty penny to get a lot of ads. And when you say that they will win a pre order of twilight princess, you do mean it is only the pre order, the winner still pays. correct?
No, I'd pay for the whole thing and just set up the shipping address as whoever won the contest.

Yes, yes they do *memory smirk*
This whole ZU crisis is a prime reason for the steady decay of the community as a whole. The Zelda fanbase used to be about so much more.
Sorry Blank were you the original third winner? I didn't get a reply from you for at least month afterwards so I gave the prize to a runner-up. (I suppose I owe you one now ??? )
Heh, no. Don't you remember? I was the second place winner. You mailed me a Hyrule Symphony CD. We had a few email exchanges to confirm addresses and "thank you's" ;D
thats pretty cool! And yeah, this will be a major blow to the online Zelda comunity if its not dealt with properly. When all the members there see it getting sold, they are going to go out hunting for new sites. and when one of them spots desert colossus, its going to meen triple mod duty ??? lol! yeah, ive already pre payed, and preordered my copy. I got nothin to fear. ;) Still thats realy thoughtful of you. Do you have a job? You must have a heck of a salary to manage all of that, and then go giving stuff away you know. Well im sure everything will work out in the end. until then all we can do is cross our fingers and hope.
Yes, more mods is a good thing. ::)
Yes GF that's true but too many mods could prove to be bad.

Oh good! I thought you were the third one who never got back to me in time. (Phew)
