Title: Paris Peace Conference (1919)
Post by: Mysterious F. on June 30, 2006, 10:32:42 PM
Talk about the conference stating the terms ending WWI here. I'll start with Greece: Greece wanted Southern Albania, Wester Thrace, Eastern Thrace, Izmir, and a large piece of territory stretching halfway along the coast of the Sea of Marmara down south almost 400 miles to a point a little bit east of Turkey's southwest coast. Eastern Thrace was understandible, the population was mostly Greek. Western Thrace, however, was mostly populated by Turks and Bulgarians. Grece, though, because of British and French hatred of Bulgaria, which owned Western Thrace, gained both pieces of Thrace.

Southern Albania made sense, it was mostly populated by Greeks. Several countries also agreed to divide the country. America barely kept Albania from being divided.

Izmir and the large Turkish Territory was reasonable. There was a large Greek population there, and Britain though a powerful ally in the Eastern Meditteranean could help its claims to India and the Middle East, so the city and a large surrounding area went to Greece, but not all of Greece's claims were recongnized.

In the early 1920's, however, Turkish nationalism got the best of the Greeks, and forced them out of Izmir and Eastern Thrace by 1923. Britain, France, Italy, Greece, and Armenia each gave taken territories from Turkey back to the new republic, and Greece lost most of its new conquests. Only Western Thrace remained in Greek hands.

This treaty also led to the treaty of versailles and led to Hitler and Hirohito's involvement in WWII

And I believe it was the start of Italy's treachery in WWII because they joined the Allies just so they could gain land in the end.

Italy didn't deserve land. It couldn't hold its own by 1917 and could no longer gain victories because, with Russia defeated, tropps were being rushed over to fight in Italy and France before America could show up. Italy only fought once outside of the Italo-Austrian boreder area, in a failed offensive of all things. Italy barely deserved anything promised to it. Italy, disappointed by this, left the conference for some time. China, which barely fought at all, deserved more! Japan got most of its claims, but the two most important ones, Shantung Peninsula (China) and a protectorate over China were never approved by the other powers of the conference. Japan's aggresions were mainly for its ancient dream of ruling Asia.

Time for some of my random hitler trivia

Hitler didn't use mustard gas in WWII because during his service as a soldier in WWI he was gassed himself.

Germany was today's Russia, falling apart, and the depression hit Germany with full force. At times like these it is possible for dictators to come to power. Please get back on the Paris Peace Conference topic.
