Title: Advertisers
Post by: Gamefreak on July 12, 2006, 11:27:13 AM
I am sick of all these advertisers on the site.  I know Zelda Veteran is particularly angry among the mods.  Is anybody else sick of these people doing this stuff?

very sick of it, my friend. it pollutes the site and wastes room. And it's mostly for useless stuff anyway, so it's like trash in the forum.

They're unbelievable, indeed! It's as if they're taking advantage of Jack: he pays for the site, maintains it, and does the housekeeping, and those stupid advertisors have to hinder that. >:(

Really, though, this site costs money to run, and they're getting free advertising! Is that even legal!?

The point of a forum is to discuss ideas, not try to advertise some miracle drug that no one needs.  But these people are hard to stop.

Well, do we have any ideas to try to reduce their numbers?

Abolish material goods and let the government provide us with everything we need.

I have no idea.

I hope Jack can do something about it. If he can't do it, the only way to get rid of them is to allow the Cohorts to delete those topics.

Okay, THAT may be my best idea.

I'm not sure if there's much we can do.  I mean they sign up just like anybody else.  The only thing we can do is delete it after it happens.

we can delete them after the topics theycreate are posted, that's all we can hope to do. Then, you can ban them and never allow their user name to come back.

Delete the topics with the advertisment on it, and then ban that member.

What do you mean advertising, Like advertising it when your a member, then never come back here? is that what you mean, because I didn't do that, I come here all the time.

no, like a random user name that advertises for a product and then never comes back again.

Yeah, that makes me mad, can't they just email him or something?

I mean, wouldn't be easier if they just emailed him, and not have to worry about creating an account, if they created an account, cant they just come to stay and do things, and advertise there forum at the same time.

Hey, I wasn't taking Adventage of him, I just wanted people to know about it.

I'm not talking about you. I was talking about businessmen who advertise products on the forum to help their company make money. That's taking advantage of the site.

Visual confirmation is a good way to keep these advertizers out, assuming they are bots.

Unfortunately there's very little I can do to get rid of the advertisements. The "people" that post the ads are not actually people, they're computer programs that do the posting. What I have done to combat this so far is to appoint a new semi-cohort (Whocares) who should be automatically deleting these threads when they appear. If you see an ad thread, just ignore it, and it will be gone shortly.

Unfortunately why I can't do anything institutional about the problem is that all the anti-spam stuff is in the new version of this forum software, which is technically a different product, and I'd have to start a brand new forum and lose all old posts to utilize those features. So, I think we're just stuck playing defense in the meantime. I will still look for solutions, and I'm sure I'll come upon one soon.
