Title: Current Affairs
Post by: Rincewind on July 19, 2006, 07:00:07 AM
Seeing as how the International News has been locked by two peoples stupid arguments(one being a Mod should know better) this is a place where you can actually talk about the news.
We could start with the Israel - Lebanon conflict.

For some reason, I have this feeling that this might turn into a World War III.

I hope it doesn't - but I can see how you could be right. I hope it can be sorted out peacefully.

Don't even go there.  Jack Fate was warned multiple times to stop trying to start a religious debate.  Gamefreak handled it quite well, and now Jack Fate will be banned.

He argued for what he believed in. Is that so wrong?
No it is not.

As you lot are so off topic I shall get us back on track.

The fighting is awful. Innocent people are being killed, over 180 British people have been shipped out. Something should be done!

Which was religion.  We don't allow arguments about that here because of the emotional investment people have in it.

Anyway, I need to watch the news more often now, like I used to.  Maybe it is the fear of being overwhelmed by all the big stories.

Same here DW, I need to watch the news much longer.

The unfortunate problem is that religious tensions seem to be a cause of many of the worlds fighting.
The Isreali's aren't really fighting the Lebannon, they are fighting Herzbollah - the terrorist group - who Israel believe poses a threat to their security and kidnapped their soldiers.

I'm kind of interested to see what will happen with this whole Middle East situation when we get a new president in January of 09.

Who do you hope the president will be?
Title: Re:Current Affairs
Post by: Gamefreak on July 19, 2006, 11:18:30 AM
As far as I know, the people running will be-

Democrats-Hillary Clinton  8)

Republicans- John McCain, Conda Liza Rice.

Of course there's still another year or so before primaries start so more will probably come up.
Title: Re:Current Affairs
Post by: Rincewind on July 19, 2006, 11:28:27 AM
If you had the only vote, who would you go for?
Condoleeza Rice is who I would vote for.
Title: Re:Current Affairs
Post by: Jack on July 19, 2006, 12:02:05 PM
Condi Rice will not run for prez, she doesn't have the experience. Though, she would make an excellent Veep choice for the Republican candidate, for both political (ie. A-A woman) and practical (policy wisdom) reasons. She might be viable in a few years, but definitely not for 2008 in regards to the top job.

Rudy Giuliani I predict will be the GOP candidate for Prez, he has wide popualrity with the American people, and isn't widely despised among the GOP base like John McCain is.

The Dem nomiantion is Hillary's to lose, and she is very vulnerable, because she isn't against the war to the degree that her radical left base would like.

Keep in mind that primaries are primarily (forgive the pun) participated in by the more radical fringes of each party. That tends to mean more left or right leaning candidates prevail over more moderate ones. Though, there are exceptions (like how Dean failed to win any major primaries because he was seen as unable to beat Bush in a general election).

Well I'm glad to say that I'll be able to vote next election.  And I'd rather die than see another 4-8 years of Clinton.

Do you think the Iraq war was good or bad Jack.

It started on the right ideas (bringing Iraq into the geopolitical sphere of the West and out of the tyrannical axis it previous occupied) but it has been VERY bungled since the end of the anti-Iraqi state part of the war. I'm really pessimistic of how it will turn out (though there is always the chance that Iraq can pull through and do right), but I think we should stay because the presence of US troops in the region is having an overall net positive effect on the region's nations (politically, the belligerence of Iran and the Israel-Hezb'ellah matter is another matter).

If all else fails and Iraq becomes untennable, we should let the Kurds start their own country. They are too capable of forming a stable, prosperous nation for us to chain them eternally to a rotting corpse of Iraq (if that day might come, and I hope it doesn't).

PS. Rincewind, love your name.

Condi rice will have a hard time running. not only would she be the first minority prez if she won but she'd be the first female prez.

But which ever republican runs and wins will have a hard time, the democrats are taking over congress
Title: Re:Current Affairs
Post by: Gamefreak on July 20, 2006, 01:47:10 PM
Yes Sephiroth.  I'm worried as to what would happen with the war if the Democrats take over Congress.
Title: Re:Current Affairs
Post by: Jack on July 20, 2006, 03:04:39 PM
The Democrats won't be taking with chambers. The Senate, probably, but definitely not the House. Which is a shame, because the GOP needs a time-out from power so they can remember exactly why voters put them in power in the first place.

For some reason, France, Italy, Russia, and Germany want Israel to call a ceasefire.  Now Hezbollah attacked Israel unprovoked, very similar to Al Queda attacking us on 9/11.  And even if a ceasefire was called, do you think that Hezbollah would respect that and stop?  It would be like trying to call a ceasefire between cops and criminals, it won't do any good.

Yes because world peace is a pipe dream.

They shouldnt have done thath. what a foolish question, besides it'll never happen.and as gamefreak said, Hezbollah would continue attacking for sure.

I know this topic has been extremely innactive, but I found it and decided to sticky it, because members could make a large number of topics about current events, when instead we could have one big topic about it.
Title: Re:Current Affairs

The original topic for World News was locked when Jack Fate caused a bunch of trouble, so Rincewind created a new one a while ago. I was going to make a new World Events topic, but instead I remembered this and decided to just use it instead of making a new one.

Probobly McCain. Not Julianne, because he supports abortion rights.
Title: Re:Current Affairs

Definitely not McCain or Giuliani. Any ounce of respect I once had for them has been completely eradicated by their continued support of the status quo and recent extreme pandering to their base. Giuliani's "ZOMG 9/11!!!11!11!" shtick is really getting old and strikes me as shameless fear-mongering. McCain's pandering to the religious right and unrelenting support of the War in Iraq sicken me. And Romney is right out, for obvious reasons. Anybody else I couldn't really care less about really.

Now Hillary's nanny-state ideals irk me somewhat, but if she were to become the Democratic candidate I suppose I'd have to bite the bullet and vote for her. Obama would be even better, seeing as how I agree with virtually every point of his. Edwards seems a non-issue to me, he'd never make it all the way. And, as much as I love Gore, it looks like he's not actually going to run. And, like the Republicans, no one else interests me at all

So, I suppose it'd come down to Obama or Hillary. Obama being preferable, but I wouldn't not vote for Hillary. ;D

Both of them would be a first, as well, Hillary the first female, Obama the first black...this could be a very historical election.

Excuse Me!!! At least I'm not psychotic.

Anyway, since, it's technically a Current Affair - what do you all think of Jerry Falwell's death? Not that I like to be rude about the dead, but good riddance - wonder what direction he's heading?!
Title: Re:Current Affairs
Post by: darkphantomime on May 19, 2007, 12:50:51 PM
Heh... I don't know who Jerry Falwell is, and I honestly believe in neither Heaven or Hell.

Unless of course, there are MORE political things that you'd like to talk about and, instead of making productive points and arguments, you end up being no better than the side you so despise.

Isn't that right, John?

i dont think we should have a mod's topic or w/e.

the one on zv's site ( which is pritty much dead now ) didn't work out so well :] because I SEEN IT. it wasn't very nice...

to much secrecy and talking about other people and stuff...

i dont think we need one. it would just make things worse.

i had no clue where to put this... i dont think it qualifies in the current affairs topic... but its an affair of tdc... and its current so... current affairs.

Anyway, I believe the "Rule Suggestions" topic in the Announcments and News forums would be the place ot put it.
