Title: Chain mail
Post by: Harashi on August 07, 2006, 09:47:36 PM
Hey I've been thinking of taking up the hobby of making chain mail, (not sending letters asking to send to 5 other people) I have seen that 12-14 guage wire is best but what material should it be made of, I'm thinking steel or some alloy strong like steel. Also do you know if Home Depot stocks this kind of wire?

Well, chain mail has one fatal flaw in defense.  If a sword were perfectly aimed, it could pierce chain mail.

Or a knife, right?  Actually, I would use mine to do what they did on Mythbusters:  punch sharks with it. ;D

Chain mail is a bunch of linked metal chains that form a coat over your midriff and upper body.  They're quite good for armor.

Depends on the quality. Im taking sword classes next summer, and ill get really good. Also, chain mail is not the best armor. Has anyone ever heard of the scottish broadsword? It doesent have a very sharp edge, but its really heavy, and is basicly just used to crush bones and leave bruses.

I've heeard of it.  and to  Harashi Im guessing that home depot or lowes will probabally have something strong enough to use.  If not try asking your local lock smith or something like that if they would know where to find some. hope you succeed.  that would be pretty cool. ;D

what about a flail :othose things are awsome too

A flail is basically just a mace with a chain attached.  Chainmail is good enough against crushing blows because it's flexible.  A crushing attack could penetrate something like plate armor with good effect.

Chain mail is basically only defensive for cuttung weapons if hit with a flail or mace your bones can still be broken, and arrows and lances are mails bane cuz they cut through it like aluminum foil. And Zelda Veteran if you can wait a couple of months or a year it's yours as long as you don't mind that I'm mutilating my first 5 rings ( I'm buying a heavy duty wire cutter tomorrow) Oh forgot to say a mace wouldn't destroy the mail so much as you.

Oh and just to let you know Lowe's has 14 guage galvanized steel wire, a lot of wire not sure precisely how much but cost about 9-10 dollars.

Finally if you wanna know how to make it I reccomend this site  http://users.frii.com/dnorris/maillearmor.html

Doesn't it take months, I saw someone do a bit once.
Anyway if you have a LOT of spare time ya might as well.

But ya know I am more for un-armed combat...

This past weekend I watched someone make some chainmail. It's actually quite simple and no welding is involved. It's just a matter of linking the rings together to form what you want. It's actually similar to knitting.

So you can make it whatever shape you want? :-\

I tried knitting once, damn hard.
It took me a bout 2 months to make a thin scarf, and I only made half of it, my mum did the rest :)

But still there are thousands of rings to link in chainmail depending on how big it is.
You should start off with like a wrist protector, those look cool.
