I saw the entire Sabata-Religion topic fiasco, and read the entire thing. I came to a conclusion: Religious topics should be prohibited on the Forum. Maybe a rule should be made. It cause nothing but issues. I'm lucky i wasnt there when the topic was made, or I'd have been banned or warned.
So, to better TDC, i propose that a rule be made by jack that religious topics be kept OFF the foum.
Comments? Opinions? MOD Opinions? And yes, i want opinions, but not a debate, to be clear. :P

Well I see no problems talking about things like religion, politics, and other hot topic issues as long as it is done with class, respect, and intelligence. Everyone has opinions on these matters and many will be different, there should be no reason we cannot discuss them openly as long, as I have said, people are respectful in their discussions. Of course, this is difficult because usually there will always be one who blows up on the topic, make a stupid statement, or just blantely disrespects others.
but the thing about that topic was that it diddnt get out of hand, no one was insulting eachother, we were just debating, or did some one start insulting me after i logged off?
There was just a negative vibe in that topic, and it can still be felt. If it's gonna cause nothing but negativity, then why continue to have them? Politics, fine, but religion is much more touchy. Im not trying to squander opinions here, i just want to kepp the forums at peace!

I think it's a wonderful idea. I would put in a word to Jack MasterKey. It makes sense. And not that any rules were broken, but the fact that we were all arguing. Nobody likes to argue,(or at least i hope not) it's no fun. And if you'll look closely at the rules, one of the rules is: "Have fun." So technically, there is a broken rule in there. Still religion causes problems, and it's an issue we would like to avoid. Thus, I think it would be a nice addition to the rules. MK, you really should have made this a poll, so that we can all vote on the rule.
Then there would be 99 yes's, and only 1 no. ;D

If you were a true intellectual, sabata, you would have been smart enough to put no offense to people. A person who cares only to put forth his own opinions without objectivity is not an intellectual. A true intellectual is not wont to insult all those around him. If you feel like your going to go for an 'intellectual' status by making people fight among themselves, then you are one who cares only for the shed of blood, while one who is an intellectual takes great care to make his points clear and nonoffensive.
No, debates are not intellectual when everything boils down to an ugly fight of bloodshed. If you were an intellectual, you would at least exercise some control in your word choice, not to mention your spelling!
If you were an intellectual, you would coarse over every little detail until you have become aware that there are more others than you, that you become 'self aware'.
If you were an intellectual, you wouldn't have such huge gaps in what you put forth. If you were an intellectual, you would willingly cite your sources of where you got your information on something. If you were an intellectual, you would be willing to an investigate an argument thoroughly before making your own opinion on the matter.

woah. woah. woah! debates are a very important tool used to express opinions and discuss topics with good hopes of opening peoples' ideas to other views. debates rock my hypothetical socks and i don't think we should cancel out religious ones. i've taken part in alot and in none of them have i ever thrown insults or suggested my opponent(friend) is inferior or 'stupid'
my friend weien is...well lets say...the most pious kid i know(he's not a kid) and he's a great person to throw the religious topic around with.
lets not go banning topics...just set rules to it(don't we already have some) or maybe create a section on deep discussions.
debates can degenerate to all out brawls but some of us are mature enough to partake in them.
Good point Phantompig. Still, I find it irritating. And you never know what kind of hothead will get him/herself banned.
well hotheads shouldn't participate if they know they're hot heads and if they don't we have warnings to tell em to cool down...
or we can have you tell em to take a walk and cool down if the warning doesn't say it enough. nice job with that.
EDIT: and if a debate section was made we can even go so far as temporary bans from that specific section if people can't handle themselves appropriatly. that way, if a scrimage pops up we can deal with it and not HAVE to ban the kid if it's only the debate getting him riled up.
I have something to add about the intellectual thing. this is a very well thought out addition, and worthy to be added to the speech.
if you have intellectual as your caption, and constantly say you are intellectual, being able to spell intellectual among many other things is a very important skill.
Alright, so I'm getting the general ida around here that most would like a rule against it, with 2 exceptions so far. I really should have made it a poll. If anyone wants, I (or someone else) can create a poll topic for this. Oh, and i appreciate you telling Jack of my concern, ZV.
I don't want to ban debates, that would be foolish and would make it boring here. But religion should be, because it is more touchy than anything else.
Like I said, if i were there when the topic were created, i would've had warnings or been banned.
I'm with the no-debating thing, too. Debates may be an argument over things that are significant to the world, but they are still arguments.
The "debate" that Sabata started was a discussion (well, it never really was entirely a discussion; it was an explanation) that degraded itself to a heated argument, which is how a lot of debates end up as.
If you're an "intellectual," you need to at least give your opinion around WITHOUT insulting/bashing on others, as well as keeping the status quo at a calm level. Did Sabata's topic do that? No, it did not! In fact, the status quo was never at Level 1 to begin with, which just about every civilized discussion should be!

so we're pretty much banning religion on these forums...not just debates, religious discussions as well? atleast that's what i'm seeing.
i'ma still gonna go down with my biblical ship. i might not be religious in terms of praying and following church doctrine but i do have a lil heart for these discussions...

I probably should have said this in my first post, but we should allow religous debates. If somebody does get out of line, they can be taken care of. I have many religion debates on other forums and have never once insulted somebody, except for hypocrites, they really annoy me. religion is important, it comes up in life, and we need to know where we stand and why. otherwise, when it comes up in real life, what will we do?
Well as I said in my original post, EVERYTHING should be open to talk about, as long as people follow rules and respect each other and back up their posting with intelligence. That is what forums are for, discussing things. Of course we mostly talk about Zelda and games here but we should be free to talk about anything as long as protocol is followed.
I love debates, but the religious ones do seem to cause problems (this is a good example of a debat- calm, and a good discussion).
Maybe if we just make a whole other section for debates, it would make those that don't wanna see them happy, and it would make those that love to debate happy too. That way, you can choose to debate or not, and you can choose to go in and possbily be wanred/banned, or not go in at all.
I guess we could theoretically place a Debates section in another standalone part of 'community'. But keep in mind, THIS IS A ZELDA FORUM NOT A DEBATE FORUM.
In other words, It'd be perfectly fine if a new section were created to exist alongside Chatboard and General Discussion. However we must be warned in case things get too out of hand. I recommend that Jack create a new subset of rules governing the Debate Board. Since it is in fact, a departure from what is on the majority of the other boards.
You know if your suggesting new threads you might as well suggest putting in a Movie/Music/TV thread and a Sports Thread cause I have noticed alot of threads in General Discussion that fall into any of the 4 that should have been in Chatboard (but I think people want post counts). So if a Debate thread is created (or if not) there should be seperate threads for talking about TV shows/Music/Movies/Sports. If anything it would make things more organized.
