Title: Broken bones, anyone?
Post by: Darth Wyndisis on December 14, 2005, 04:53:20 PM
I have one quick question for anyone who can answer it.  Have you ever gone to the hospital because of a broken bone?  I am asking this because I am writing a story and I came to a part where the kid breaks his arm.  I never broke anything in my life, so I don't know what the hospital procedures are.  Do they give you laughing gas, inject you with pain killer, or anything?  I know it sounds stupid but I want to keep it at least semi-factual.

Gosh, I feel so ignorant... :-[

So basically you go to the ER, wait for the people who have more serious injuries to go ahead of you, then your in a room with a doctor who puts you in a sling/cast and gives you pain killers and sends you on your merry way?

Well, to be fair, we went right to an orthopedist rather than the hospital, my mom freaked out and didn't want me to wait in line forever (and die of a broken bone apparently, lol), so we went to a specialist right away who took care of the problem. But my case was different so I can't really claim to be the norm in this situation.

Edit: Woops, meant to edit my last post in this thread, accidentally deleted it...  :-\

Thanks.  Now that I think of it, I might not need to make it all that factual.  At that point in the story, the kid is unconscious and hallucinating (dreaming, I guess), so I suppose it would would be safe to have the kid wake up with a sling on his arm, and for the doc to hand him his meds saying, "Here ya go, Timmy." ?   But that does seem kind of cheap.  Would it be reasonable to say that they gave him laughing gas (or anything) and then worked with the bone and put on a cast?  I am unconfident in my ability to think logically, as you can see.

That plausible to me, if the injury that broke his bone also knocked him out.

On a side note, does the medical profession still use laughing gas? That seems so... 1800s.

They used it on me when they were drilling my tooth.  I don't they would use it in that situation now that you mention that.

I fractured my collar bone and I broke my jaw(Well not so much as I broke it but some other people had the courtesy to break it for me.). I didn't even know that I had a broken jaw until I saw the dentist a few months later, except for the acute pain I suffered through about a week after the incident( But hey, what can you do about it in jail?) and, now five months later, I'm all better.

Are you asking about the kid in my story?  If so, it was his ulna.  I think I am going to have it dislocated from his elbow too.

What are you talking about?  What 'sound so wrong' about an ulna being dislocated from an elbow joint?

"Disgusting," that sounds better than "wrong."  It sounded like you were saying I said something perverted without realizing it.

Oh, I remember a time when my friends and I were at basketball practice probably more than one year ago. See, one of my friends was trying to catch the ball, which was being whipped to the other side of the gym. When his hand came into contact with the ball, he dislocated his either his thumb or another finger! :-X

I never really saw his crippled hand (thank God!), but it was bad, since he couldn't play for, practically, the rest of the season!

speaking of people, (this has to do with cats) my g'ma told me and my bro this, that...i forgot almost all of it. but one of our cats i think, got carried away by a cyote. ill try and remember g'mas story. well, ill only tell the end, cant remember the beginin one of my g'mas cats mum, got carried away by a cyote, the cat escaped the first time, then my g'ma heard kind of a screech from a cat, and she told her husband, i think, to get his bbgun. he did. and then the cyote got the mum cat, and the mums kitten didnt know what was happning, because its eyes were still closed, but, that cat still goes out where it was born, waiting for his mamma to come back. sad story huh?

Yea it is

I fractured my finger lastnite playing B-ball
when i jumped of a plat form i made so i can reach the hoop and my finger got twited in the net

IT HURTS worst now then it did when i had done it

;D i put a home made splint to hold it straight using popsicle sticks and medical tape
- its not serious
( costs me a -lot more if i went to the Doc's)

Man, THAT must've hurt. It reminds me of a gruesome story about a basketball player that had a ring on and dunked a ball. The ring got caught in the net, and the flesh on his finger... Oh, it's unbearable! :-X

Anyway, Omni-Link, that's a good idea to improvise! When in doubt, DON'T go to the doctor. ;)

This reminds me. I got a stiff neck when I woke up this morning. :(

The worst part of it is that I had track practice today, and I had short, painful spasms in my neck.

I know this isn't really related to broken bones, but a word of advice: set up your pillows comfortably; if you don't, you could have your neck stay in one place for most of the night, giving you this irritating irritation.

I hate coyotes for that very reason.  (It hasn't happened to me, but if one of those got a hold of my cat...  >:( ... I would blast it to pieces with a shotguh.)  They are also cannibals (sp?) and will eat domestic dogs.

Yeah, the story wasn't pretty. Poor kitten... :(

(Oh, and, shadowlink13, I think you spelled "cannibals" correctly. No worries.)

Coyotes eat domestic dogs!? What kind of sick creatures are they!? ???

Or so I heard.  I've heard stories of people who live in Arizona who have to let their dogs in before night because of coyotes.
