Cross-posted here, there, and everywhere!
Everybody's favorite lady thieves have survived the flood! And they've gone brunette, apparently.
I've made screencaps of the latest trailer, and here they are.

A woman on a ship. Generic enough; certainly Tetra's got competition.

And here's Link fighting her. Doesn't she a little familiar?

Two swords? That's a very Gerudo fighting style; most of the Gerudo have twin swords in Ocarina of Time, and Ganondorf has them in The Wind Waker, when he's feeling his most patriotic. She's obviously tan, with rounded ears. And she wears a high ponytail, like most Gerudo women do during Ocarina of Time.
So the Hyrulean Gerudo have gone pirate, like the Terminan Gerudo. Interesting!
I hope they keep that Latino-style music, that was some of my favorite tunes. I have a feeling that they won't explicitly called Gerudo though. I wonder if there might be hints to thier abscense in TP... :-\
Aonuma has confirmed the Split Timeline, so no. :-* Besides, do their abscense need explanation? I mean, it's pretty obvious the game doesn't include everything. Because if they were to do that the plains would be filled with farmlands and villages, and there would also certainly be more towns. And the Overworld would be much, much larger.
Though it's possible they might have been chased out (unlikely, because it's only a century or so after OoT), most likely they simply weren't included because they didn't fit.
As for the name of the desert, I think it's more likely that it's named after the Geldmen (Geld=Ge-ru-do), who are all over the desert.
Umm, you can't believe what Nintendo says, see my post on the main page when he said it was a split timeline to see what I mean.
LttP's desert was called the Desert of Mystery.
If we can't believe what Nintendo says... that throws out about fifty percent of good canon, manuals and all. Aonuma, on the other hand, has said some pretty odd things, but his remarks on the split timeline are too specific to be something odd.
A Link to the Past is commonly considered to come long after Ocarina of Time, when the Gerudos were last (confirmed) plentiful and well known. It's plausible that the name "Gerudo Desert" was forgotten. From a development standpoint, Gerudo Desert was probably derived from the Geldmen, common desert enemies. However, they don't show up in games with the Gerudo Desert (Ocarina of Time and Twilight Princess). From an in-game standpoint, the desert and the people are so intertwined nobody knows who got named Gerudo first.
HA! Yes! Thank you!
QuoteFrom an in-game standpoint, the desert and the people are so intertwined nobody knows who got named Gerudo first.
Yeah. There's a really primitive naming system. Not that there's anything wrong with it, of course, but it makes things a little confusing when determining the who-and-when's. Very collective-- "this place is called this and the people who live there are also called this and the monsters can kinda be called something similar so we know where everything goes" sort of thing. Heh...
Anyhow, I'm stoked. The hair colour isn't much for me to complain about, although it certainly was an interesting racial feature when it was brightbright red.
She looks like Tetra's mom! :o
Seriously, she does! At least in the first picture. And it's possible that this one just dyed her hair.
She does look like the portrait, yeah. But Tetra's mom is dead, and also had the pointy ears.
I don't think hair dye is readily available in Zelda games, but it is possible she did. Or it's possible that the red hair is finally becoming a less dominant trait over the years.
Well, explain why Link had pink hair in LTTP.
That was just the SNES' limits. Look at the officail art.
Ezlo says it was right after haloween and alttp link was a troll doll! ;D
But yeah, I hope that Gerudo come back. I would hate it that my favorite race only appeared in two games. But that first picture looked a lot more like Tetra than a Gerudo.
He's saying it was Link dressed up like a troll...
ALttP is strongly animé-influenced. Several people have odd hair colours. Besides, why stick to the hair colours of our world. In the fantasy world I'm creating (only in my mind, so far) there's a much larger variation of hair, as well as eye, colour. By the way, the official artwork of Zelda looks nothing like Marin, but her in-game sprite does.
Oh, and the ancient Egyptians used hair dye. :-*
except for the women, they shaved their heads. and yes, almost everyone here loves anime and manga, those have the craziest hairstyles ever.
OMG! That was Link?!?!?! I shouldn't have told Shikamaru that was Malon then...
....what? Sorry, I really didn't get that at all...
