Because he wanted to protect them. The outside world is a dangerous place, after all. You might not necessarily agree with it, but that's probably why he did it.

The guard.

he let Link out because

1). Link was ordered to leave by the Deku Tree

2).technically the guard wasn't at the exit. In fact I think if you talk to him he says 'you aren't leaving are you?" or something like that, because there is another section of forest.

3).Link has a sword and shield. He gets his way. :)

Also, the Deku tree didn't lie, they will die. They will grow old and die, just like a Hylian, until they re-enter the Forest, then they will stop growing until leaving again.

He did tell them the whole truth. You see the Kokiri live until they are killed, because they don't age past 11 or so.
So to them dying after only like 60 years is really young, so they didn't want Link to leave.

He probably just meant it in a way that there's monsters out in Hyrule and he wanted to protect them. I don't think he lied.

Does anything else have proof, this one just makes the most sense.

Now i havn't played Ocarina in some time but i think im right in saying that the deku tree dies before you leave the kokri village. What if the kokri only have their protection from harm due to the deku tree, once the deku tree is dead there is no loger that protection and they are all going to die in a short while anyway so they might as well leave (again no proof but just a theory). Their spirits (or even their faries) linger in the forest to later be reborn when the deku tree grows again as the leafy faced people in WW.

I don't think it would take seven years for them to "die", and by then a new Deku Tree grows.

What if thier lives have already been extended by the deku tree and once he is gone they catch up to what they should be (would back up the not leaving the forest story)

In any case, one would assume that a sapling deku tree would not command the power of a fully grown one until it is of a rather large size... and trees grow SLLLLLLOW so yes they probably would "die" in that time.

But that assumes their life force is in any way attached to the Deku Tree. I think they would've mentioned something as important as all Kokiris dying when the Deku Tree died.

Hmmm indeed. Possibly he knew that they would loose their human forms but would later become koroks so not necessarilly dying as such?

Perhaps the deku tree simply didn't want any kokiriki to leave the forest as he could only protect them in the forest. He states that Ganondorf came and cursed him when he refused to give him the kokiriki emerald, even though none of the kokiriki ever mention having seen ganondorf enter the forest. Perhaps the deku tree lied to keep the kokiriki innocent. If they knew extensively about death and monsters they would change. He does refer to the kokiriki as his children, so perhaps he was just acting like an overprotective parent? No-one is perfect ya know...

I have a question... Since Link wasn't a kokori, how come no one noticed that he aged faster than all of the other kokori?

well im guessing that he wasn't around long enough for them to notice that he aged faster then them

also, because he wasn't a kokiri, he wasn't subject to that rule, so that rules him out of the leaving the forest.

as for Saria, i figure that being in the sacred realm is a lot like being dead but with an influence on the living, if that is true she wouldn't have broken the rule either
