Title: How 'bout some rules? (Includes List of Cohorts)
Post by: Jack on February 22, 2005, 10:41:35 AM
Hi everyone and welcome to the Desert Colossus Forums (version 2.0)! I've used a new forum software, YaBB, that is relatively much simpler than the old one, so working with it should not be much harder than before.

Moreover, I've added barebones forum sections throughout here, so if you have ideas for new ones, please use the Instant Message feature of this board to suggest them to me.

Anyways, as for the rules, they are quite simple and are as follows:

1. Be civil. No insults, put-downs, slurs, etc.

2. Be helpful.

3. No profanity.

4. (The "joe" rule) NO SPAMMING. Spamming is replying to every single topic with a silly one-word response or reply that has no relevance to the topic at hand.

5. When replying in a topic, keep your reply relevant to the topic.

6. The forums are not for conversations. If you must communicate one on one with someone, use PMs. That's what they are there for. If only you and one person are posting in the same topic for six replies or so, and the topic of conversation has moved away from the original topic, then it's a conversation.

7. Don't do anything that will stretch the page. Examples include a huge line of dashes or periods, or just pasting the URL of a link into the reply box. Rather, break up long lines of stuff with periods, and use the URL button on the reply page (it's the one with the globe).

8. Proper grammar and spelling please. The occasional number-as-letter substitute is fine, but if that's all you post with, you make it exceptionally hard for others to read your posts. This is more common courtesy than anything.

9. This is less a rule than a suggestion--it is considered exceedling polite to have more than just "lol" or "haha" or "I agree" as a reply. Not necessary, but preferred!

10. Have fun!

11. The Golden Rule: if you have nothing nice to say, don't say it at all!

Learn 'em, live 'em, love 'em, buy 'em dinner.

I think we should add a few more things hear, Jack can confirm these or not.

As for Spamming, if you do not know what it is, it is basically making posts that are irrevalent and serve no purpose. There has been quite alot of spamming so far in my opinion so lets try to keep it down. An example would be starting a new topic that just says, "this site rulez". If you think you post or topic is spam, it probably is.

Flaming: This is any personal attack against another member. Of course this has not been a problem yet and lets hope it stays that way, remember we are all friends here.  ;D

Trolling: Trolling is saying or doing something that anyone with common sense knows will start an argument or fighting. Again this has not been a problem and that is a good thing.

Here's an idea:

Rule:  You may not post excessive characters that causes the page to stretch.  It looks a lot better when you have no more than three exclamation points at the end of a sentence.

Do write:  I wish Twilight Princess would come out now!!!

Don't write:  I WISH TWILIGHT PRINCESS WOULD COMEOUT NOW!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Edit: Ack!  I need to learn to read.  It already is a rule.

These rules a fair, but you two are scaring me. :-\ Also, a good rule would be that in the Fan Works forums, the one who is writing a story can double post only if the second post is a new part of the story. Other than that, it counts as breaking the rules.
Title: Re:Welcome to the Forums! (How 'bout some rules?)
Post by: Darth Wyndisis on May 19, 2006, 08:50:01 PM
That sounds reasonable.  Authors should be allowed to post continuations.
Title: Re:Welcome to the Forums! (How 'bout some rules?)
Post by: Mysterious F. on May 20, 2006, 05:51:40 AM
Yay, then you wouldn't have to wait for someone to post on the topic to put another part of the story there. Also, if the post is a while after the author's post, shadowlink13 could lock it, and the story could never be finished unless you tell the entire thing to Jack in a PM, but then he could lose his place and would have to worry about reading it all again. Also, the double posting thing could save you from putting the entire post in one post.
Title: Re:Welcome to the Forums! (How 'bout some rules?)
Post by: MagmarFire on May 29, 2006, 06:33:05 AM
Yeah, really. It reduces risk, in case anything should happen that would prevent you to be able to post a large chunk of the story.
Title: Re:Welcome to the Forums! (How 'bout some rules?)
Post by: Mysterious F. on May 29, 2006, 06:56:29 AM
Yes, very useful. We should also make it so that if a Cohort or Jack delete a post of yours, you still get credit for it. If you delete your post, it doesn't count.

You know, I think there should be permanent warnings, which stick to one specific member forever. This could only be given to members who continous break the rules. This is like decreasing the amount of warnings for one member until they reach their limit. They can never be removed like normal warnings unless the admin. does so. Only the admin. can give these out, and must also consult the mods, too. This should help deal with spammers like medli was much quicker.

Well speaking of the rules how about you change them a bit. Like defining what should be in General Discussion and what should be in Chatboard. The rules are vague at best, but the majority of topics in both threads are spam, spam, and oh yeah SPAM!!! Make a difference, it shouldn't be that hard.

Yes, spamming is a more minor offense, while insults and cussing are much larger ones.
Title: Re:How 'bout some rules?
Post by: bgrugby on April 10, 2007, 07:42:22 PM
You know Whocares you are really not meant to be a mod, saying that spamming is only a minor offense. If it is done in minor doses (besides being in the Chatboard) yes, but the way you say it is ok and I think that is why people on here spam like crazy because of your way of thinking. It is JUST as bad as insulting as it is insulting the intellegence of other members and JUST as bad as swearing because it is allowing spammers to spit on the hard work real members do. Unless the rules state otherwise...THERE IS NO MINOR OFFENSE....and I know as I was here before you even joined buddy.
Title: Re:How 'bout some rules?

Okay, you've seriously gotten too out of control lately. What is your problem? You're using the behavior that you tell everyone else not to use and are saying the mods suck, even though you're using the behavior that is agaisnt the rules. You're on your way to a second warning (not yet, but soon if you continue) at this rate. If you're trying to make the mods look bad so that you can become a mod again, then you are doing a very bad job at it and are pretty much starting to act like dan_the_man, King of Evil: Ganon, and Sabata.

Something has seriosuly gotten wrong with you, and I suggest you either just forget about it or take a break from TDC until you've gotten over it, because it's getting very rotten. Whatever is keeping you like this, please try to stop this.

Also, you didn't even have a reason to make this post when you could have did this in PM and not have nearly gotten in trouble.

One last thing: it's been gone over, and it's fealt you should get a second warning for this because it's clearly insulting and almost flaming.

Title: Re:How 'bout some rules?

Fights obviously contain flaming, and flaming is covered. A rule against fights, save non-serious ones, would be quite redundant.

Tacheon Black, from the department of redundancy department, would like to second Lava's comment.  Even if the act itself isn't prohibited, use common courtesy and common sense.  The rules don't say that I can't change my name to Magmarfire and steal his set, but it would be, to say the least, very uncouth...
