Title: MSU
Post by: Darth Wyndisis on August 31, 2007, 01:12:53 PM
It is now my second year of community college and I have finally decided what I want to do.  I want to go into zoology, and I heard they have a good program at Michigan State University.  It looks like most of my classes will transfer, so that is good.  The only thing I won't care for about the zoology program is all the calculus I will have to take, but I suppose I can learn to like math as long as I see that it is relevent to what I plan to do in my future.

I think limits can apply to animal population, so there's some relevance for you.

Maybe I'll visit sometime if you go to MSU.  I live in Northwest Ohio so it can't be more than a few hour's drive.

Dangit, why doesn't anyone come by me? :'( Beside Baka, but visiting her isn't a possibility...HNS might move to the West Coast, no idea how close though...

Might as in three to four years, Shika.  I have to graduate from DeVry first.

Anywho, seeing as how I'm going to have to take some math courses, I just might be able to help you, Wyndisis.  Which means you just might have to be on AIM a tad bit more often, eh?

Hey, that'd be cool.  I checked on Google Earth and MSU is about two hours away from Toledo.

I have an AIM address?  Wow, I almost forgot.  Ha!  I have a long way to go though; I am only in trigonometry right now.

Geez, you hit the bullseye Wyndisis.  I live in Toledo.  Rather, a suburb of Toledo.

I'm getting to that time where I need to start thinking about college and all that, seen how summer went by fast, knowing my luck, my junior year will go by fast, leaving me with little time to get a good idea of what I want to do, which I have zero clue on what I want to do...

Wait, wait, are you a junior or a senior?

I am a junior, but I have no clue what I am going to do when I go to college...

If you don't know what you want to do by the time you get to college, you could always have an undecided major.  You take a variety of classes to see what you enjoy, and then you can decide on a major from there.  Or you could just pick a major you think you would like, but if you end up not liking it, you could change your major.  It's not uncommon for a college student to change their majors several times in their college career.  I changed my major a couple of times myself.  I'm even changing the college I go to just to do what I want (video game design).

Good for you, going into Zoology. I've told myself several times I want to be a zoologist, myself, but...

Calculus isn't all that bad. I mean, you get to use a calculator pretty often, it's better than doing it in your head. I least, I think so. If you memorize formulas, it really shouldn't be that hard.

You probably need math for... uh, I can't think of anything right now. :D;

If he wants to go into zoology, he'll need math for calculating how much of what kind of food should be given, calculating the ages of the animals and stuff like that..

Uhh... Fisk? You can't use normal calculations that people are accustommed to to calculate Calculus problems. It takes a fair amount of work in your head. Either that, or a REALLY advanced Calculator. And even with that, you're not allowed to use it on the tests.

True math takes a fair bit more than the usage of calculators. You'll know what I'm talking about in a couple years.

I know it takes more than a calculator, but... I could've sworn that it was Calculus that is mostly calculator work... it's probably another branch of arithmetic. ^^;

Either way, memorizing formulas would still help. It doesn't matter what mathematics class you're taking, that always helps.

Whoa, that's kind of creepy...  Oh well, probably just a lucky guess.  Toledo was the only city I could find in northwest Ohio; the rest was all farmland.

Whoa! If you're going to MSU, DW, then you're not that far from where I live! ;)

Wow, it's been over a year since I posted this topic, and I am still going to community college.  That is so depressing.  But in any event, I have an update.  In August I applied to Michigan State to enroll in the Spring semester and they still haven't made a decision.  I was kinda freaking out so I applied to a safety school, Northern Michigan University, which also has a zoology program.  They accepted me in a heart-beat, so apparently it isn't very competative.  I don't know why they made it so easy to get in.  Either they have lower standards or they just can't find anyone who wants to freeze to death in Marquette.

Hoo, boy. I got accepted not too long ago myself.

Maybe we'll see each other on campus in the future? :P

Into MSU?  Did they take forever to decide to let you in?

I'm getting money together right now for Community College.  I'll probably have it by the time payments come around.

As for me, I'm pretty set on a political science major.

Yes to the former, and no to the latter. I think I applied...maybe three weeks ago?

I haven't applied to colleges yet, but that's going to be coming up next year- and I'm going to be applying for scholarships like mad this next semester.

I think I still have two years before applying for universities,  but if I want to have any sort of chance of getting into Oxbridge it might have to be earlier.
But I need back up because I doubt I'll even get through the interview process D=
I'll have debt for like 15 years but it's worth it, I'll just dig around for every bursary possible.
I can't wait to go to uni!

That was fast.  They say all over their website that it typically takes 8-12 weeks to make a decision.  It's been over 12 weeks for me.  Maybe it's because I applied for the Spring semester as opposed to Fall.  And it's not like I'm that bad of a student either, I mean, I have a 3.94 GPA and will have 60+ credits once the semester is over.

Still, it might've been longer. I kind of dismiss these things from my memory when I don't need them.

So, I checked online yesterday and they said they made a decision (but not what it was).  The message also said that they mailed a letter to me, and that it would take 7-10 business days for me to get it.  Why?   It's not like I live that far away from there.

Eh, postage. Can't fight it, it seems.

It seems like many official letters are mailed instead of sent electronically, possibly so it's easier to verify and authenticate, but the shipping time is unexplainable. Even shipping something with the slowest shipping rate the post office can provide, it should take three days at most if you don't live that far away.

I wish you the best of luck, DW!

Thank you.  Now I got to figure out where I am going to live while I am there.  Preferably a quiet place.
