Title: Sega Dreamcast.
Post by: Twilight Wolf on August 31, 2007, 07:04:04 PM
As some of you know, I've recently purchased a Sega Dreamcast from eBay. I've been playing the heck out of it since I got it, and I've developed an obsession of sorts about it. Hence, I was curious to know if any of you have one, or at least have some sort of memory about them. I think the Dreamcast is an amazing system, especially for its time. It was a pioneering system when it came to online gaming, one of the first, if not the first, to implement online play in its games. Its graphics are amazing for the period in which it was released, although they look a bit dated compared to today's consoles. Plus, they've got some of the most entertaining TV commercials of any video game system! Sadly, due to the PlayStation 2's release in 2000, along with other factors, the Dreamcast was discontinued, never to see the store shelves again. It's a shame... I think it could have had some real potential.

I can think of  the DC as having a sort of cult following. While I can't recall too many games that weren't eventually ported to other systems after the DC's demise, I can make the point that it was highly valued.

Although, what games do you have for it now?

I honestly think the Sega Saturn was more obscure than the DC...

The Dreamcast seems to have a cult following it, yes. For some reason, people seem to think they're rare, so they overcharge for them on eBay and such online stores. They're only worth about $20, if that. I got mine for about $15, before shipping.

The games I have are Sega Rally 2, Sega GT, and Sonic Adventure. All of them are loads of fun! I'd like to get the web browser disc, though.

Yes, I agree with you on the Sega Saturn being more obscure. I'd never even heard of it until I ran across the Wikipedia article about it! It seems like an interesting system, though... but that's beside the point.

You NEED to get Skies of Arcadia. One of, if not the, best RPG EVER!

I've heard that's a great game. Actually, the guy at Game Crazy who I bought Sega Rally 2 and Sega GT from told me that the Dreamcast was his favorite system, and he gave me a list of games he recommended. Skies of Arcadia was one of them, as was Sonic Adventure.

Sonic Adventure was good, it was released as a Director's Cut for the Gamecube with more features. The only problem with it is that it's a pain to watch them talk, the mouths aren't animated well AT ALL.

Skies was rereleased as well, for the PS1, but I would get it for the Dreamcast since you have it.

Uhh... Skies was released for BOTH PS2 and GC.

So what other games were on that list?

Eh, I just saw the PS1 though.

The original Soul Caliber would be good to get as well.

Here's the whole list of games the guy gave me:

So... Opinions on the list? Agree? Disagree?

Oh, did I mention I absolutely love the Dreamcast's controller? It looks sort of unwieldy, but it's really pretty comfortable! I still have no clue why Sega thought it best for the controller cable to come out of the bottom of the controller...

I've played and beaten Grandia II. That was another game that was released for other consoles after the DC went under. I beat the PC version. Don't know if it will still work though, heard it was buggy on XP... but even more so on PS2.

Grandia II was great... But I need to play the original Grandia.

DId I mention that gamearts had quite a history with Sega?

Nope, that was Nintendo, although that was only in Japan, with the Famicom. Sega was the first to try the now established online gameplay.

I've only played on the Dreamcast once, at a game expo. The controller was awesome. I think I played Puzzle Bobble, which was quite fun. It's not fair things ended like they did, but Sega did a few stupid things that were just bound to come back one day, and hit them hard (I recommend this movie (http://www.gametrailers.com/player/usermovies/46141.html).

About those games, I've played Skies of Arcadia Legends (a port deluxe) on the NGC and I consider it one of the best RPG's I've ever played. If you like turn based RPG's, I'm sure you'll like it, if not love it. Crazy Taxi I've only read about, but it sounds most people who actually played it were very positive. The House of the Dead series is good if you like rail shooters (don't forget to buy a lightgun as well). And Shenmue (and Shenmue II) I have yet to play, but I've wanted that since the very first time I ever heard about that game years ago.

Anyway, I recommend reading Wikipedia's pages about the games to get an idea what genres they belong to and thus whether they might interest you or not. For reviews and grades, I recommend Gamefaqs.

I don't recall ever reading about the Famicom having online gaming capabilities... I know it had an optional modem that allowed you to download things like news, though. And the Super Famicom let you download games through a satellite receiver, but in both cases, there was no online multiplayer gaming involved. There was also a service called XBAND for the SNES and Sega Genesis, but I'm not sure if it could be considered online, because I don't know whether or not it used the internet.

I've heard of the Dreamcast's laser burning out before. You ought to get yourself another one and relive those memories. If you can find one at Game Stop or a similar store, they should be under $20.

He was probably referring to the Genesis though.

Maybe... but it wouldn't make much since if he did, considering this topic is about the Dreamcast.

You obviously don't have much experience with JDog. (http://i125.photobucket.com/albums/p55/Commodore_Axilon/Forum%20Crap/linkwink.gif)

I guess not. If he was talking about the Genesis, then my whole post is rendered pointless, at least for the situation I was referring to (the Dreamcast's laser burning out).

So you got a Dreamcast? I suggest you get Sonic Adventure 2 as well. Probably one of the best recent Sonic games.

I've heard that that's a good game. I'm definitely keeping it in mind. Skies of Arcadia, too.

Oh, while I'm thinking about it... I turned on my Dreamcast today, so I could play some Sega GT, and it asked me to set the date and time. This could mean one of two things: either the rechargeable battery that manages the date and time isn't doing its job (it's supposed to save your time settings for two or three weeks), or something happened to the Dreamcast that I wasn't aware of. I hope it's just a fluke, because I don't want to have to open up my Dreamcast and replace the battery.
