Title: Getting too old?
Post by: Knil on September 02, 2007, 07:46:07 PM
I'm getting to the point in my life where I need to let go of some of my childhood hobbies.  I mean I turn 16 tomorrow, so there are some things I'm going to get rid of.  So the question is, are you guys growing DISTANT from Zelda?, not necessarily wanting to abandon it.  AND this could also be a place where you post things that you recently grew up on.

I hope I put this in the right place, and I'm 90% sure I will not stop playing Zelda.

Blah, I'll be 19 in 3 weeks and I have even more of a passion for Zelda... Okay, not really, but I have a renewed interest in playing (and eventually beating) Twilight Princess.

And besides, I'm a crazy guy, if you didn't know that I was already a legal adult, you'd think by some of my posts that I was a hyperactive 13 year old. A SMART one at that, heheh.

Possibly. I was really quite disappointed with TP, and if the series keeps going in a direction I don't like, I can imagine myself losing interest. I really hope Zelda doesn't turn into the next Mario, or "Nintendo's Whore" as I like to call it. It used to be a series of originality, innovation, and fun; now it's just...well, not so much. :-*

Note that this really doesn't have anything to do with my age though.

Meh, the only thing I really have against Mario is all of the Mario Parties and Mario sports games (with the exception of Mario Kart).

I understand how you feel. I've grown distant from things I used to love as I got older. That's because when your older, your tastes change. It's not something to worry about. It just means your maturing, and that is usually a good thing. But that doesn't mean you need to toss your childhood loves aside either. ^_~

Besides, you should enjoy your childhood while you still have it, so you don't have any regrets for when you look back at the days from when you were younger, when you're in your late 60's, that is.

You don't need to throw aside your childhood hobbies as you age. That's just silly.

If people did that, we would have no Game Developers.

Yeah, anyway! Why do you think The Legend of Zelda was even thought of?

Marisa: Growing up is what I meant.  The only reason I use the 2 terms interchangebly is because I didn't want to use the "up" all the time.  I have the same problem with the Mario games too.  I am looking forward to the Mario Galaxy game, though.

Fae: I'm really not worried about it, but it's just that I can't have anyone come over to my house, not because I'm afraid I'll lose my status, but I'm embarrassed to have my fav stuff out.  For instance, people were cool about me being a vegan, a really cool kid and one of my best friends brought a Pokemon game to play in front of the Basketball team, and another kid I really know brought a Mario game to play right after school.  So actually I still like that kind of stuff.

10thGear Link104: The thing is I feel like I've enjoyed my childhood for too long, and I'm not going to even remember a teenagehood.

Does anyone else feel like that?

Sorry for the double post, but I couldn't find a way to combine posts.  Um, what are you talking about?

Shikamaru Nara: I never said you should throw away your hobbies, I just asked if anyone had similar feelings, and I think you can be a game developer and not like that particular game, you could just be a certain type of artist.  Like I wouldn't mind if I was a game developer.

Well, what I meant was before the time when you actually WILL have responsibilities to your own good self. Like a job, your own place, stuff like that.

For myself, I relish neither growing old nor growing up. But since the former is going to happen whether I like it or not, I'd better enjoy the ride. Growing up, in my opinion, is more or less a concern than growing old; it kind of depends on my mood. But I know that for either, if I wish for myself to be older, I'm definitely going to regret it later. So I'd like to keep both types of my youth in some way or another.

When it comes to Zelda, however, I don't see an end to my love for it, and neither am I concerned about losing interest in it. Really, it's my favorite video game series of all, and with motion sensitivity into the picture of gaming, I'm sure Nintendo will continue to make it a hardcore series.

Oh, and Knil, to combine posts, just copy one of them, press the Modify button at the top of the other post, and paste the text into it. ;)

Its cool to like Zelda and be as old as you want. My friend's dad is still into Zelda. Me and my friends are still cool with Zelda, and we're not afraid to admit it. I have a Zelda Sweatshirt that I wear to school for crappin out loud. And my social life is pretty in tact, so its not so much as a "growing older" matter.

Now DBZ is something I grew out of, as was Pokemon. Sadly, I haven't bought anything Pokemon since. . . since my Pokemon Colosseum, and that was when it first came out. I'm not sure if my passion for Zelda will ever die. I love challenging games, and the puzzles in Zelda are just perfect for my mind. The action in the game keeps me entertained, while the puzzles make me think to advance further into the story that captivates me. I'm a Zelda fan for life. :)

Perhaps if you gave me a reason why you feel that you have to distance yourself from the game, I could give better advise. I'm turning 16 next week btw! And If it were things such as a job that kept you away from gaming, it would be perfectly reasonable, and sensible to cut down your game-time. Schooling is also a major "no-fun" zone.

I'm 19 and a half. I've grown up. I tend to think long and deep about things and am more critical than I once was. But for that very reason, I keep on liking stuff like videogames and cartoons. You can't be too old for them, merely think you are. I mean, one has to have a hobby, and I prefer videogames, cartoons, comics etc. above getting drunk every Friday night.

Btw, some people here are confusing two things. If it's solely your taste that's changing, you'd also stop liking older games that you once liked. TP is a NEW game based on NEW ideas. If you didn't like it (much), that doesn't mean your taste has changed. It's just that you don't like new stuff as much as old stuff.

I made a bet with my friend that said by the time I was 16 I would still like anime. It's been almost half the time and my love has not waned!

But yeah as you grow older tastes change. With videogames, I think it's hard to "grow out of them" more like you just change your standards.

My favorite pastime...cough,cough.

BUT ANYWAY, what I really don't want to do is get too involve in video games and not reach absolute potential of friends I can get.

Everybody's advice though has honestly been very beneficial.

The primary topic though is what are some things, if any, that people have grown distant from.

If you ask any of my friends, they'll tell you; I'm hopelessly obsessed with Zelda games. I refer to them a lot. It pisses them off. :D I don't see my love waning anytime soon, either.

I personally would be selfish and be a gaming whore rather than be socially accepted. I don't like hanging around people who would tell me to stop playing the games I love, I mean... it's trying to change me, and that's very hard to do. (not really.. heh. ^^;)

Er, I mean, a lot of people say things like "your drawings are stupid, you should quit drawing" to me, but I just said poo to them and went on drawing.

My point is, you shouldn't change for the sake of others. It just makes you a drone to that person.

And as for things I find myself distancing from... Pokemon. Ruby/Sapphire/Emerald were okay, I wouldn't say decent, but they weren't horrible, either. And Diamond and Pearl just look... erk. The Pokemon are hideous and the moves are stupid. I like the new system, but... >_< the people and pokes are just too ugly to stand.

Oh, and Harvest Moon games... I love the simulation stuff, but I'm too much of a perfectionist to do well in the game. I usually last two days, then I reset the game. >_<

Yes, I'm growing distant from those both as well, but that's because they're getting too tedious and uncreative.

The thing is though, nobody tells me to stop doing the things that I want to quit.  I want to change on my own.  People would accept me if I said I liked certain stuff, but I personally feel imbarrassed to still have an interest in stuff.

There's no need to feel embarrassed about it.  It's who you are, and, if it doesn't harm you or anyone else, you need to accept that about yourself.  Once you accept who you are, then people can accept who you are.  And if they can't, then hey, forget them; you probably don't need them anyway.  Life is too short for you to worry about what other people like about you.  If you like something (again, if it doesn't harm you or anyone else), then you should keep on doing it, even if people aren't going to like you for it.  Just look at Fisk and Shika.

Huh? ::)What did I do? I'm being given credit for something, right? Okay then, I'll just fade into the background then...

Seriously though, it doesn't matter whether they want you to change or not; You would still be changing for others.

I'm 27.  I spent the last few years in foreign countries I'm not allowed to tell you the names on military operations for the Marine Corps.  I'm also a Zelda fan, and I'm vicariously living my youth again through my Zelda fanaticism, and these forums and fansites.

Whether this has anything to do with the fact that I may never be able to walk properly again, possibly.  Case in point, though, you're never too old or too 'cool' to play Zelda or chill here.

I don't think 'growing old' has anything to do with it to be honest. A series of games like the Zelda series will ultimately change. I think that's inevitable. Look at how much it has already changed over the past years. If a series changes and moves along, that defines a good set of games. I personally am quite happy with the way Zelda games are heading. The fact that I might not enjoy certain games (Found sailing in Wind Waker tedious after a while) doesn't mean that I lose faith in the series. In fact it makes me happier, because the people making it are prepared to try new ideas and experiment with ways of playing new and old without caring too much if a few people complain. I'd define this as true originality and a breath of fresh air. To be honest, Zelda was always about the story line and the puzzles for me, but for a lot of other people it will be about the sword fighting or the control system. To meet all the expectations of a mass consumer market in one game would be impossible without making it stupidly long and feel like several games stuck together in sections. Enjoy the games as they come along I say. And when I say stuff, I usually follow it. At least after I've said it in an unnecessarily long fashion. I think.

some games change, others stay the same. Some get away with it. For example, Lemmings. A game almost as old as me, has changed very little, from original genesis glory, to shiny remake, and it works. EA's C&C3: Tiberium wars (A.K.A: Let's cash in again), however, changed. And failed. It lost the feeling that made the other games great. And it's crap, in my opinion.
Some games series are built on change, like Davvy's Zelda.

Lol, crappin out loud. XPP But, I have to agree with ZV. Except for the friend stuff, since I don't have any friends and I don't know anyone in real that likes Zelda XPP

I've never really had an interest in DBZ, but I still like Pokemon a bit. My cousin and his friends LOVE Pokemon. But, HOW THE HELL ARE YOU SUPPOSED TO CATCH EVERY SINGLE CRAPPIN POKEMON?! There's like, 1,000,000,000,000,000 now!!! I like the old Pokemon better than the new, prolly 'cause I've been around the old more or something... I also agree about love challenging games and puzzles. But sometimes I get so po'd... GAH!! But, I love mysteries. Whenever they hint about something in Zelda or something, I always think of possibilities. And, also, when I played OoT after I played MM, I came up with a whole bunch of silly idea's when I saw famil. people. For example, with the Happy Mask Salesman, I thought that he came across Market Town (I forget what it's called... XP), he thought that since so many people were there he'd start a shop. And like ZV, I'm a Zelda fan for life, too.

I haven't stopped liking videogames lately (I actually play them more now than ever!), my tastes have simply changed. Like last year, I was still addicted to Harvest Moon and Pikmin (both still fun), but now I'd rather ply a game like Starwars Battlefront, or Halo.

DnA, That's exactly how I felt about the pokemon stuff.  The game is actually very boring with the same storyline every single time.  It also got very old with the collection of the dudes.  The only reason I stayed with it was cuz I liked how they used animals and plants in them.  Weird I know.
