Title: Plans for the future?
Post by: Gamefreak on September 06, 2007, 06:00:39 PM
Here we can discuss our goals for the future.  They could be long term or short term.  It can be about schooling, or careers.

As for me.  I intend on applying to colleges this fall.  I might go to a Community College for a couple years, and then transfer to one of the larger colleges in the state.  My main hopes for said colleges are Ohio State University, Bowling Green State University(bgrugby would be happy, I think), Bluffton University(A small private college), or The University of Toledo.

As for careers, I might go the way of Jack and study Law, and/or Political Science.

That very well could be a requirement for TDC Forum Admins from now on.

Anywho, after I get a job, I'll be enrolling into DeVry University and taking online courses to get a degree in Game and Simulation Programming.

 ;) Purely coincidental, I swear.

Anyways, Programming is something I "might" try.  I'm horrible(Ask Dr.) at Visual BASIC.  But I'm pretty good with C++.

First Semester: Visual BASIC: Straight D's

Second Semester: C++: Straight B's.

For myself, I also plan on going to college to become a video game designer. One of my dreams is to work at Insomniac Games. :D

Funny how I never said anything about being a video game designer.  Then again, I think I did tell you I wanted to be a video game designer.

Yeah, you did. Either that or my mind's going kooky. Each is quite likely. :P

I'm torn between focusing on video game designing and studying Paleontology, since I've loved dinosuars since I was little. Although, I gotta admit that eventually all the bones in the world will be dug up, maybe even by the time I'm older.

Hey, man, you never know.  There very well could still be bones by the time you're ready to start digging.  Or someone could clone a dinosaur, thereby making paleontology obsolete, just like in Jurassic Park, but this time no one would die because of a greedy businessman.  Which is why it's always good to have a back-up plan, huh?

Er, well... short time goals:

-learn to play recorder by Shimakon
-finish my Shadow Link costume by Shimakon
-make a Sora Lion costume by next years Realmscon
-pass my sophmore year (I have no doubts; Alg. II is fun and everything else is easy. however, gym is a complete hell.)
-get a copy of Majora's Mask. >_<

long term:
-get a scholarship (>_< without it, I can't get to a college. parents never bothered to save any money for college for me, so...)
-hopefully go to Dalhousie (college in Canada)
-get a degree in game design, otherwise be an artist for a living and have to eat my drawings for sustenance.
-GET A PET FISH.

Well, this is certainly something. You stole my career choice, you jerk!

But seriously, what are the chances of finding someone on Zelda fansite who's also interested in paleontology, of all things?

P.S. There are still plenty of fossils out there.

What if you were planning to steal my choice Commodore, and I made a preemptive strike? Besides, just about everyone likes dinosuars wheb they're lttle, it's just a matter of whether or not they still like them when they are older.

Well, I like paleontology too, so... I still like dinosaurs, too. But the problem is, I wouldn't be able to get into paleontology because I don't do well in the sun. /:

If I had to get an actual job, I'd probably be a biologist or a marine biologist. Animals and fish are so interesting, it'd be hard to not figure out things. (I'm more of an observer than a let's-mix-this-and-this person.)

Okay, now when we pick on you about your grammar, maybe you should shut up and listen.  You know why?  Because writers need to use proper grammar and spelling.  Gasp! (http://i98.photobucket.com/albums/l267/Hi-n0_Selj1n/Emoticons/lomg.gif)

And if a writer is your back up plan, you still going to need a back up plan for that.

As I mentioned in a seperate thread, I am planning on going to Michigan State University (Eastern Michigan University is also a possibility) to get a bachelor's degree in zoology.  Then after that I would like to get married and have kids.  I don't know where I will live after I graduate from college; probably wherever I can find work.

Well, there is always the military for a backup. I heard if you do ROTC (Reserve Officer Training Corps. starts ypu out as an officer right out of college) in both high school and college, you get paid like 4 times more than an plain enlisted soldier. Plus, what are you going to do with that money if you're over seas? Not much, so it basically goes into your bank account. For example, when my parents got back from Desert Storm, they had quite a bit of money. And, I think ROTC pays for college.

And you don't have to bash JDog that hard, HNS.

NOt really that realistic a career choice, I think. You'd be surprised at how much skill the whole thing takes, not just for the group but for each individual.

With that in mind, I am seriously doubting if HNS will managa to make true his career plans.

Same here, I got a crapload of ideas for games, but probably none of them will ever be more than ideas. Just being realistic here.

Hey, it's JQ we're talking about here, half the things he says are depressing and/or self esteem crushing. Besides, I heard that course Devry gives only gives you a certificate, not a degree or anything like that (Doubt that there is a degree avaible for game designing). If you're that determined, get some friends and set up a company in your garage. Worked for Steve Jobs, right (or was it Bill Gates?)

It is a bit unrealistic to suppose you want to be a game designer. The thing is, though, when you're willing to work for it, you have a better chance for it.

Like, no offense JDog, but if your backup is game design, I seriously doubt you could pull that one off.

I have no idea what college or anything I'm going to, but I know I want to compose music for video game companies or become a manga-ka. I'll most likely end up doing something more realistic though.
Title: Re:Plans for the future?
Post by: Hi no Seijin on September 09, 2007, 11:23:58 AM
Hey, working on video games is realistic; don't let anyone tell you otherwise.  It just wouldn't hurt to have a back-up plan, that's all.

I suppose with all this talk about back-up plans, which was started by me for the most part, I should say what my back-up plan is.  But, um, I haven't thought of one yet. ;)

My passion in life is video games and writing, and I am a skilled writer (or so I am told by others), but they aren't always a steady paying job.  There isn't really anything else I like enough to pursue as a career opportunity, nor is there anything else I feel really good at to go for either.  While working at a Tropical Smoothie Cafe or GameStop does sound appealing to me, I'm not quite sure I would want to spend the rest of my life working at one.

Short Term:

-Get a waitressing Job in the Tearooms.
-Pass My GCSE's and A-levels (preferably above C ^^)
-Take a gap year to travel the world either before or after university. (Countries of choice: Russia, Thailand, Japan, China, Canada, New Zealand, India, Kuwait -to see family-

Longer Term:

-Get into a good University
-Eventually pay off gargantuan student loan.

As for jobs, maybe something in Anthropology, hopefully something involving travel. Or a French translator.

  • Maybe get a Sega Saturn

...Off of my list of goals! I bought a Sega Saturn last Tuesday from eBay, which included all of the necessary TV and power cables and two controllers, and it arrived today! The game I ordered still hasn't gotten here, though, but I love messing around with the CD player. The system is in perfect condition, too! No scratches or scuffs anywhere!

...And that's it. Feel free to go about your normal business.

I'm not sure about where I'm going, career-wise... I love animals, but I want to have time for drawing... I'd love a job in art, but... well, that's rather unrealistic, I fear. No one really cares that much about art anymore. >_> Unless it's super good, which is... not... me. Even if I were a super-great-omg artist, I don't think I could charge more than like... ten dollars for a picture...

But the thought of running a cafe is actually quite comforting to me... so I don't know, I might run a cafe or something.

Sometime in the future, I'd like to get some real friends. You know, people you can hang out with or play video games with. Don't get me wrong, I love my online friends, but isn't it natural to want to do stuff with people your own age?

Sorry to sound so depressing.

Yeah, it is natural to want to hang out with people your own age... I would, but haha -OCD!- I can't. u_u

Still, a cafe seems to be a good idea. I like coffee, and I like to make sweets. Mmm, cheesecake with coffee...

Well, at least you have a social life... I don't. I'm stuck at home all day. And the only people my age around here are not people I want to hang out with (druggies).

That's why I like my music so much... It makes me feel so much less alone.
Title: Re:Plans for the future?

Aww, but the druggies were always my best friends... At least in High school, and if they tend to be cool as opposed to violent.

Anxiety disorder over here...
