Alright class, settle down, and get out your MS Paint (If you don't have it, try Google, you can probably find a place to download it). Open the sprite sheet I had you all download follow these instructions:
1. Select the box that contains Master Chief, and copy it into a new paint, so you see nothing but that box.
2. Download this image right here:
3. This image has some sample colors for MC. He's so easy for beginners becuase he only has the same color all over, just in a light, medium, and dark shade.
4. Have both the box with MC and the colors open, and I will go over the rest later.
Do we have to use MS Paint?
i'm gonna start right away!!!

For right now, yes. It's the best program for learning the ins and outs.
I'll get to part two tommorow, I'm kinda busy this evening.

there ya go!
That's pretty good! Like I said, Part two will be tomorrow.
That position is kinda disturbing for a pink master chief...But can Rabies get a Good Noodle star?
Accursed father won't let me download stuff.
you don't have to, i just saved them as bmp files

BAD! I was going to go over this later, but I guess I should say it now. Bitmaps look nice, but thier filesizes are HUGE! Also, don't save as JPEG either, it distorts the image. I would go with PNG whenever possible, maybe GIF.
Anyways, here how to recolor.
1. Have both of the windows open that I left off with.
2. Select the ink dropper.
3. Click on the darkest shade of green on MC.
4. select, copy, and paste the color sheet into the same image as MC.
5. Get the ink dropper, and right click on the darkest shade of the color you want, so the the little boxes in the colors area have dark green on top, and the dark color you chose on bottom.
6. Take the eraser, and right click and drag the eraser across the image.
7. The dark greens should change into your dark color.
8. repeat for the other two shades of green.
Now, show me you work class!
i definately did it a different way
My paint program isn't starting for some reason.

i definately did it a different way
So did I. I pasted the color sheet into the same Paint window I had my sprite sheet open in, then I used the eyedropper, selected the darkest color I wanted, and used the paint bucket thing to recolor each of the dark areas. Then I did the same with a lighter colors in the light areas.
Anyways, here's some of what I've done!

File type depends upon program. When using Paint, or photoshop, save as PNG. When using something like MGI Photosuite, use GIF. Never use JPG! Never use GIF with paint! Only save as BMP on special occasions, it's not a good type. I only use when I want a quick recolor and I'm being lazy, a Zelda pallete color converter only uses BMPs.
Umm...
Probably shouldn't have told you about that when you are learning to recolor. But, well, it's an important basic and you need to learn it.

Don't worry about it now, but the technique I taught you is much faster. And don't worry too much about the file types too much either, it was just a tip.
Sorry, I must have misinterpreted your instructions... When I tried your method, I just had a big smear of solid color over each sprite, not a recolor. Then I realized that I had to right-click as I erased. I feel dumb now. But yeah, it is a lot easier. Thanks for the tip!
And now you know why it pays to pay attention.
i can't wait for lesson 2!!!!!!!!!!!
So what are you gonna do for lesson two? Basic edits or just structure? I think I have something you can use if you do the latter.
I'll go over structuring tomorrow. You can send me the sprites you have, I'll see if I can use them.
I can't find it.... I'll post it if I do eventually find it.
Behold, my own original creation!

You should have it end at it's chin, now it looks like it goes up it's nose.
But other than that, how is it?
Very good. If anyone can find MGI Photosuite(I have no idea where I got it), if you set the color count to below 16 million(the next down is 200 something) it automaticly changes all colors that are the same color as it. But otherwise, when recoloring sprites, the paintbucket is your friend.
First off, that's pretty cool Gamefreak!
Alright, I'm gonna be short and to the point. The only sprites I have actual experience with structure are the Halo sprites. However, I'm good with them, so here's hat you do.
1. Open up the sheet with Master Chief, and copy and paste the body and the head separately into a new Paint.
2. Select the head, and when you do, take notice of the bar on the side of the screen.
3.
Click the button I circled, tis allows you to move items without the white parts overlapping.
4. Drag the head onto the body, and, voila! You're done!

Show your work, and next week will be basic comics.
Oh, and can a mod change the title to "Sprite Lesson 2: Structure"?
One last thing:
QuoteBut otherwise, when recoloring sprites, the paintbucket is your friend.
That is only effective for large areas of the same color. For details, use the technique I taught you.
It's actually pretty easy to do iPod placements for all your favorite occasions. Although the degree of professionalism varies, I just used Paint.
Gentlemen behold! CORN!:

And for lot's of sprites the case is that it's mainly the same color. These Halo sprites are certainly an exception, yet good practice.
sorry but Paint is bad i do it in fireworks
