So I said "Jeesus Christ" in public and was scolded for it. My parents say that its a cuss word. Id have to dissagree though. That would be an oppinion to me since Im an Atheist. So, who thinks jesus christ is a cuss word? Why?
More of a mild swear, I'd still allow it out of a sense of exasperation, rather than the more profane.
A swear word is a word used to claim something profane by the name of something holy, so they'd still consider it a swear, but it's hardly anything.
His name is not a cuss, but it is blasphemous to say it.
Definately not a cuss! I've been scolded alot for saying stuff like "Jesus!" or "Oh my god!" in front of my VERY religeous aunt. They say it's using the "lord's name in vain". I guess it may be a little disrespectful (or just offensive) to religeous people, but if you're Atheist, they should understand that you don't believe in him. I myself, am Agnostic, and I curse, and say "Jesus Christ!" and "God damn it!" My parents don't care, but I just watch it around my extended family.
When my mom was a kid, her mom got mad and her mom swore. And she said "Look what you made me say!" And told her that she was sinning to have made her say that.
But at confessional, she asked the priest if it was a sin, and he said no.

Actually, it's blasphemous to say his name in vain. Which I take to mean if you're not praying to him, praising him, or preaching him to others, you're blaspheming.
Unless you're a satanist, Jesus Christ is a very good word. Be sure to tell them that for ol ZV.

Well, depeands on how you use the name. Like if your saying it in anger, then yes, I agree that its a cuss word, but if not or anything, then no, idt it is. its an ify ify thing.
Personally I don' think it's swearing, I am CONSTANTLY saying "Oh my God!, or just saying "God" when something happens. It's just a reflex. If someone tells me they find it offensive I'll stop, and when he was younger I wouldn't say it in front of my young cousin purely because if he repeats it in front of his father, who is an active muslim, I know he wouldn't aprove.
I just think its up to the person but if a person finds it offensive you shouldn't say it in front of them.
3rd commandment: Thou shalt not use thy Lord's name in vain.
So, unless you were saying something like "Thank God", it would be deemed inappropriate by religious folk.
Everyone says "Oh my god", seriously, like everyone!! I haven't met a person who considers that bad. I personally don't say "Jesus Christ" as in like "Holy crap" kind of context, but I wouldn't have a problem if someone around me said it. I don't force my beliefs on people.
:( that was so beautiful, I mean gasp
well put zv, I 100% agree with you.
Jesus Christ is a historical figure, and as such it is indeed in bad taste to profane his name.
Why do you think nobody's going around shouting "Napoleon Bonaparte!", or "Socrates!" or "Otto von Bismarck!"?
Proper manners, that's why. (http://i125.photobucket.com/albums/p55/Commodore_Axilon/Forum%20Crap/armscrossed.gif)
What Commodore said is beautiful. What ZV said is passable. ^_~

popular misconception, the whole no lords name in vain refers to using it as a swear, like saying the GD word, just saying jesus christ is not blasphemous
Blasphemy is insulting him, HNS.
I can see how it would be using his name in vain. For someone in such a high position, to have his name used as a word of anger and aggression is kind of insulting.
I actually use it in like a suprised thing or like if I saw a large puss spewing bug on the floor I would say, "Jesus Christ!" And Vaati, what is Agnostic?
Simply put, an agnostic thinks that there might or might not be a God.
Ahh, thanks for clearing that up for me :)
