I don't know if anyone else on these forums is a Mario freak (like me)... :P
Anyway, seeing the relatively recent release of Super Mario Galaxy, I decided (while sitting in my school library) that it would be a good idea to create a topic dedicated to telling us which Mario game is your favorite of all time.
You can pick any game you want, as long as it's Mario related (this includes mario's various forays into sports and even games like Luigi's Mansion).
So, discuss! And be sure to add some details! :)
Well, let's see...
The original Mario Bros., of course, was amazing. I love it, still play it sometimes at Grandma's house. It's just so simple, but challenging to see how fast you can make it to the end.
The second Mario Bros., I sadly can't remember much about...
Super Mario Bro. 3, now THAT was amazing. The transformations, the whole open-worldedness...It was addictively good like the first, but more complex as well. It had a remarkable amount of storyline for games those days.
Mariokart, the whole series is fun as hell. I remember the original on SNES, I played that obsessively. It's still the best as far as I'm concerned. Double Dash was good, I might have enjoyed it more had I not been playing it with a whiny cousin who always *had* to be in the right position on the kart. ::)
The Tennis series, superb. It was much simpler than normal tennis, but still got incredibly difficult. I played all of them, bought both the Gameboy and the console versions.
The Golf series, good, but not as fun. Maybe because it was golf :PI enjoy golf, just...actually golfing, you know? Not a game about it or watching it...
Baseball was great fun. I still play it, trying to 100% it. It gets really challenging, once again, with simplified gameplay. It's got a good humor about it, and it's fun to play against Scotty.
Strikers series...It's fun as hell, no doubt about that. But it's still not really soccer, you know? Everything's so...Mario. Most of the time you can't go anywhere without getting blasted into the wall by a chain chomp or bullet bill. Still, the intensity is great, I wish the matches were longer though.
Mario 64. Simply AMAZING. Just everything about it was brilliant--Even the graphics, at the time. Every world was wonderfully designed and unique, the storyline was there and it had tons of replayability with all the extra missions.
Sunshine, also amazing. For some reason people say they don't like it much, but I think adding in the water element was interesting. I had fun with it, even though I haven't beaten it since I don't have it. I do love it though. I guess it's because the idea of having a talking portable fire hydrant is too outlandish for people. It's ahead of it's time--Wait ten years, and everyone'll have one.
Galaxy, I've only played the demo for a bit. I know, I know, it's sad of me. I can't really include Galaxy in the review because of this, so...
It's a toss up between 64 and SMB3...I'd have to go with SMB3. Now, I've got a buttload of posting to do at HA2, so I'm not going to wear my fingers to the bone here before I type up huge posts there, so I'm not going any more in depth than that.
The original mario bros for the snes.
I love me my Mah-rio Kart. Super Mario 64 (DS) is good as well. I tend to lead towards the DS, if only because I'm used to those controls now.
You all forgot Super Mario World and Yoshi's island. HOW DARE YOU! :'(
And those are my two favorites
for same

Well, I don't consider the latter a real Mario game, but a Yoshi game, and I also forgot the Paper Mario series. Oh well.
And Super Mario Rpg, another favorite of mine
Egads, nevermind, that one is my favorite. Gawd...
Keep in mind that I haven't played all of them. Remember, I only have access to an old NES, N64, GBA SP, and DS. I also think emulators suck, so don't try to use that against me.
Umm, SMW and SMW-2 (Yoshi game = mario game) were rereleased for GBA under the Super Mario Advance Series. As SMA 2 and 3 respectively.
And Shika, did you forget that Baby Mario is featured in Yoshi's Island? So is Baby Bowser. And Baby Luigi.

Still doesn't mean I've played them.
I like Super Mario 64, Mario Galaxy, Mario Kart DS (And hopefully the Mario Kart Wii will be good aswell ^.~)
And Super Smash Bros Melee :D
I love Yoshi's Island, Yoshi's Story, Paper Mario, Super Mario RPG, and the GBA re-releases of the Super Mario brothers games. I especially love the second one, that was my first ever game...
I love Super Mario 64. Thats my all time favorite.
I like the Paper Mario series too.
Super Smash Bros rocks too.
You know, I learned something today. There really are other Mario spazzes out there!!! ;D ;D
Anyway, my perosnla favorite is Super Mario Bros. 3. I beat SMB3 like... 5 times. It never gets old, really.
I of course have an odd obsession with Mario Strikers Charged (I'll eat all of you alive). The idea of charging a ball and shooting it violently at a crocodile in a warped soccer game pulls me. I did play all the other mario sport games on the gamecube/64. My favorite is Mario Kart. Double-Dash, to be exact, but the 64 version was so addiciting that i Nearly brought it from my friend, Joe.
I don't even have enough time to get into Mario 64 or Mario SUnshine. I have to get off my computer. :P
Personally, the only Marios I liked were sidescrollers (and not Paper, I hate TYD so much). Personally the older the better, with a few exceptions. Personally, I believe that Mario has gone too far. It has ran out of ideas, mainly. Sunshine was a good idea, as is Galaxy, for the most part, but they make so many Marios that they just aren't special anymore. Every once and awhile you have a good one, but the series has overall gone downhill IMO.

Funny you should mention Mario, MK. :D
Of course, I am a Mario fan, having played it since I was little. I haven't played Super Mario 64 much, but now that I have Wii Points to spend, I'll see if I can get to downloading it after I get done with Metroid and (relevant to the topic) Paper Mario.
Sunshine and Galaxy are great in my opinion, as well. I just loved being able to shoot water in the former and being able to defy the laws of gravity and use the Wii's motion sensitivity in Galaxy. :D
Gravity defy-ment-ness has always been one of my dreams. And Mario came through for me! ;D ;D
No one seems to be mentioning Luigi's Mansion. Is that considered by you guys to be a really bad game? I mean I liked it.... I love Luigi.... :(
I've never played it, unfortunately. ???
No, no, I got it when I got my cube, as a matter of fact. I love the game, I just... er, it scares me. I don't like ghosts. ;_; I can't play it alone XD
I love Super Mario 64 had it on the N64 and DS.
Galaxy is great as well.
And we have all the GBA remakes, Super Mario World being my favourite of those.
I have Yoshi's Island GBA and DS very cute and fun.
New Super Mario Bros. is very good.

But... but... SILENT HILL!
G-g-g-GHOSTS?!?!
*runs*
*60s music montage*
Seriously though, I also hate scary games. But Luigi's Mansion was different, loved that game, good old fun. The ghosts were more funny than scary, honestly. It made for good playing...
Plus the fact that Luigi was as freaked out as you were in the house added plenty of classic moments. On a side note: I loved how Luigi would hum or whistle the theme song where it was dark in the house, since the song would only play once you'd lighted up the area.
Anyways, I love Mario, have... almost every game? Platformers at least, except Galaxy, which I have now, rented. It's worth it to say that I actually own all three originals... American ones at least, though I have the original compilation for SNES which includes Lost Worlds but doesn't include SMW, which I have for GBA. All in all a great series.
Still, Galaxy doesn't beat SM64 in my heart. SM64 forever. I beat that game twice, 100%, the second time because my first game erased, which caused me to all-out cry back in the day. Games can surely be powerful, eh?
EDIT: Forgot to mention, I was playing Mario WAAAAY before I even KNEW what Zelda was. Like years. It's sad really, but I was so clueless that when I was little I actually PLAYED Link's Awakening without knowing what it was until some years later when I played it again. Of course Mario is a video game staple (even more so than Zelda), I wouldn't be surprised if that was true for all of us.

.... And? I can't be afraid of ghosts because I play Silent Hill?
I really don't mind Silent Hill because it's just a place, but ghosts... er, yeah. Ghosts can be anywhere. >:
Well, I managed to beat Galaxy a few minutes ago. Excellent game, indeed. :D
Luigi's Mansion was fun, but I don't consider it a Mario game. It's a Luigi game. Pretty much THE ONLY Luigi game. :P
I just realized we haven't talked at all about Superstar Saga. I thought that was fun.

I take it you haven't heard of the infamous
Mario is Missing!, have you?
I have to go with HNS and Shika on this. Mario Kart was awesome, especially Double Dash and Super Mario 3 was great too. I still play both, actually
The Mario Kart games are still good, since they have simply adapted it as new technology comes out.
BABY CIRCUIT FOR GCN!
I beat just about everyone at Baby Circuit. It's awesome.
Oh, Mario is Missing!. I played that before, but I never actually, you know, owned it.
I do own Superstar Saga, and I do love it. It's great.
I heard Mario is Missing sucked, even though it stars my love, Luigi. :P
Actually Superstar Saga is amazignly good. It combines humor, Mario-ness, and a great story for an overall fantastic experience.
Well, I have the Super Mario Brothers Deluxe for Gameboy color, which has part of my soul in it.
And MOST Mario Games that were on the N64 (i.e., MarioKart64, Super Mario 64, Mario Tennis.) were amazingly fun. Hours were wasted...
And Paper Mario; Thousand Year Door for Gamecube was great.
And I've never really played Luigi's Mansion.
