Title: Another shooting...
Post by: DW on February 17, 2008, 12:00:39 PM
As I'm sure most of you have heard, there was another college shooting, this time at Northern Illinois University. The gunman was a 27-year-old graduate who walked onto the stage and started shooting. He killed 5 people and hit 15 others, then shot himself.

And of course, Jack Thompson is all over it. (http://kotaku.com/357294/jt-on-the-niu-shooting-+-the-video)

You can TOTALLY tell that even the anchor wanted that moron to shut up. :P

And once again, we see this guy pushing his own agenda after other people have lost their lives. How could anyone possibly be that heartless?

He was born without one?

It's amazing how people will ignore all factors but the one they really hate.

HNS, I really can't stand your nose. It's overly large and destructive to society.

...Yeah, just had to say something stupid in response to that. Anyways.

It's scary how many shootings we've been having lately.

I know, right? It sounds like it's becoming the biggest turkey fad or something... (The suicidal thing about it does, anyway...) >_>

You know, some people just shouldn't have guns, even if they do have a Second Amendment right.

EDIT: Sorry 'bout that, guys...

Yeah, but deciding who gets to own guns and who doesn't (outside military and law enforcement) would be a horror.

This man was a 27-year old male.

And please do not call adults with psychiatric problems 'emo'. It's... Just not right you know?

(I know you didn't say anything to that extent, but still...)

Yeah, I didn't mean it like THAT. Besides, I was referring to the general picture of "students-shooting-other-students-for-reasons-known-only-to-them-until-police-investigate" thing. Just appears to be becoming the biggest thing since...whatever the last greatest fad was.

...Parachute pants?

I hate school shootings. I mean, school's miserable enough without having to fear that some guy will come in and shoot me. u_u;

I don't really think we should be allowed guns... I mean, hunting with guns is different (still murder, but in some cases the animals really need it... like kangaroos and deer) but hunting people is a crime.

But I guess you can't change people... get rid of guns, someone will buy them in Mexico or something. u_u then we'll just be defenseless... except for our knives. And no offense, but gun > knife when it comes to fights.

People would be better off if we weren't... well, people. Not that fighting and killing doesn't occur in animals...

The difference I see, though, is that animals do it for survival. People like the shooters seem to do it out of cold blood. :-*

Oh, and lawls at your parachute pants suggestion. :P

Of course, animals have different emotions than humans. For instance, humans care about their appearance. Animals could care less if their fur is messy or that there's poop unr their tails. As long as it doesn't make them feel uncomfortable. And they say that the reason animals kill other animals isn't out of hate, but merely just for survival. I'll bet if there was a more "civilized" race out there and thy were looking at us humans. Who knows? They could think that we're savages for being annoyed with someone! So "civilization" is in the eyes of the beholder.

Seriously! I mean, if  ever got mad at someone, the worstI could do is beat them to a blood pulp--not even. Maybe just a black eye and a scab or two. Of course, I don't really get mad, I just get frustrated. But killing someone is just going way too far. However, that is just my opinion of what savagry is.

I read this great essay a while back, I need to see if I can find it...it was on the issue of guns...

Anyways, it's almost like the Virginia Tech shooter accomplished what he wanted to. He said he wanted to 'inspire people' like Jesus. Look at all the shootings since then.

Compare that to how many shootings there have been since Columbine, and we'll see who inspired whom.
Title: Re:Another shooting...
Post by: DW on February 17, 2008, 06:30:06 PM
I mean in the given time period, not overall. Obviously Columbine would have more shootings following it, because it's been around longer. We've had at least 4 in less than two years, I belive.

Give or take one or two. Of course, I'm also including that one mall shooting. It kind of counts, in a way...

The circumstances were very similar, yes. There was also a shooting in Colorado at a High School that didn't get a lot of coverage.

But I think the one about the first grade boy shoot a girl in his class is pretty sad. I mean, first graders shouldn't even know how to use a gun much less know that they exist. The boy didn't kill himself (unlike the two boys at Columbine who did), andthat makes me want to ask him "What were you thinking? What made you want to shoot her?"

You have such a small grasp on consequence when you're that age, you've have no idea what'll happen when you do something, you don't know about right and wrong, or the law...

Then why would a parent in his or her right mind let his or her child operate a firearm? Unless s/he didn't give a darn to start with. Or if s/he didn't know about it. Come to think of it, why would a firearm be within reach of the child, anyway?

Because people are inherently stupid, MagmarFire.  School and life teach many people valuable lessons, but some people just never learn.

I'd actually like to read up on it and see if the kid's parents were alcoholics or something.

EDIT: Apparently he sent his girlfriend a goodbye note.

Linkage. (http://news.aol.com/story/_a/shooters-girfriend-reveals-goodbye-note/20080214171009990001?ncid=NWS00010000000001)

His mother was being evicted and I think his dad was in prison. So he was staying at his uncle's house, and that's where he found the gun.

QuoteJack Thompson Weighs In on Mass Effect
Wednesday, January 30th, 2008
Kotaku reports that frequent video game critic Jack Thompson has weighed in on the Mass Effect situation - with, perhaps, a surprising view.

Editor Brian Crecente quotes from Thompson from a recent e-mail exchange:

I don't see any problem with [Mass Effect]. The guy who shot his mouth off about it [on Fox News] had no idea what the Hell he was talking about... This contrived controversy is absolutely ridiculous. Report that, why don't you?

Title: Re:Another shooting...
Post by: DW on February 20, 2008, 06:57:04 AM
...What's this 'contrived controversy' in the first place?

Also, wasn't Jack Thompson Debarred or something like that?
Title: Re:Another shooting...
Post by: darkphantomime on February 20, 2008, 07:31:20 AM
That just had to do with some Fox News guest misrepresenting Mass Effect as every teenage boy's interactive sexual plaything. It was just retarded because they all just fell to that one little detail being distorted beyond belief (mass effect featuring interactive romance).

And that children, is why modern journalism has gone to hell in the modern age: No one is willing to check their sources. EVERYONE's up and on with ratings... so you know what that means. That's right... Even MORE interactive sexual playthings!

Mass Effect was banned in Singapore for a while because it showed a human and alien 'caressing'.
I find that rather funny.

Well of course, they have to let us know that we shouldn't go sleep with aliens. Which sucks, cuz I'm really into one of the ones next door.

Anyways, wasn't Jack debarred...?

QuoteHe later described the playground incident as "some kind of negative interaction between the children."

...Well, I would think shooting someone is a negative interaction.

Honestly, how could that kid have the gun since December without anyone knowing?

Kids can be sneakier than you think. Like I said in an earlier post, it was his uncle's. He and his mother were living with the boy's uncle because his mom got evicted. They mentioned it was a stolen gun, right? So I'm guessing the uncle had stolen it and he was hiding it in his dresser or something and the boy eventually found it and probably thought "I saw a guy shoot someone on T.V. and it hurt that person. I don't like that Kayla girl at school, I wanna hurt her, so I'll use this gun."

After reading that, I really do not know what to say. Of course, other than whether or not he regrets what he did.

Quote from: Shika on February 20, 2008, 04:33:16 PMAnyways, wasn't Jack debarred...?

I've heard a few months ago that there was a case that was going to take place, but I haven't heard anything other than that people were trying to debar him. After what has happened, I can only surmise that the plaintiffs lost the case.

Yeah, Gamefreak made a topic about it I believe. Or JQ. They could have just gone to him for an interview since he apparently published an anti-video game book lately.
