Title: A 16 year old rape victim cries for help on YouTube (not a joke)
Post by: Mysterious F. on May 16, 2008, 03:39:32 PM
Two weeks ago, a young, 16 year old girl posted a video on YouTube pleeding for help. The girl is a victim of rape, and her case was ignored by the Florida law. As with many teenage girls who suffer from rape, she seeked help on the internet, but she is the first to post a video of herself, or at least on YouTube.

The video has caused much uproar in a little over two weeks. Causing countless parodies, spam comments, and her account even got hacked. CNN even talked about it a few hours ago. Despite many who call the video a fake, she is indeed a real rape victim who is merely looking for help. Sadly, she is very likely not to get it.

The video can be viewed here (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=mfg3w11_A_E).

I would also like to comment the fact that one out of every four girls in the country under eighteen are raped. Another fact: the large majority of these girls do not make their case to court.

How do you know it's real?

I'm not saying you're wrong or that it isn't or anything, but how do you know for sure?

She was 16 at the time of the rape; she's 25 now. The person who raped her got indicted.

It's generally a dangerous idea to post really personal stuff like that on the internet. You may initially think that they will not judge, but stuff on the internet travels pretty fast.

Thanks JQ. That'll help me sleep tonite. I have friends who are rape victims as well and this kind of thing just makes my stomache turn. I'm glad she got help.

Well, CM, JQ has a point.  There are whole internet communities out there devoted to being cruel to people and trying to convince already unstable or traumatized people to kill themselves, or do other acts that can sometimes be almost as horrible.

However, that doesn't mean that people shouldn't cry out.  I just don't think that over the internet where people can get ahold of your email or worse-- your IP or MAC Address-- is the best place to be doing that.  =\

It amazes me how horrible people can be to others. What I'm wondering is whether she got help any other way.
