Title: The annual ZU hacking.
Post by: Keaton on July 26, 2008, 09:18:06 PM
JUST TO LET YOU KNOW

ZU has just been hacked by anon, same date as last year.

Watch yourself, now would be a great time to do that thing we were talking about, GF.

I went on this plan.

Also, the boards and board descriptions at ZU have just been retitled to 'mudkipz'...

Let me know what else happens.

I won't lie, this is actually kind of amusing.

It's weird, but ZU seems a little MORE welcoming than usual.

EDIT:  Now the entire site is down.  No doubt they're trying to restore the servers to a previous backup.

Is TDC safe? Like, should we change our passwords and whatnot?

WE'RE fine.  It was SCOTT'S problem for being an idiot.

Why does he keep on hacking these sites? Can't he get a life of his own and quite ruining other people's hard work and effort to make the site?

One of us is as cruel as all of us.

Something like that...

None of us are as cruel as all of us.

Didn't Jack go the extra mile to make this place hacksafe like Zreo?

You don't think Lars did the same for ZU?  If there's a way out, there's a way in.

I think TDC will be fine
People generally think we're an inactive site.
You could say we're way out in the middle of the desert, so anything that goes on in the mainland doesn't reach us this far out. Get what I'm saying? I mean, to find TDC on Google, you basically have to type in the name of the site.

Heh. If you think about it, they've done a kind of service to the community. Look at how security conscious we've become!  ;)

... Anyone ever noticed how old the forum software here is?

I know that Jack mentioned it was obsolete a couple years ago, so yes.  I'm aware.

Does upgrading forum software fall under my jurisdiction?  Or yours kamikazi?

And that is why any security measures Jack may have put in utterly fail now.

It would be a joint effort, I believe, GF. But I don't know what the price of upgrading would be. It might involve losing everything. Remember a few years ago, when Jack wanted to upgrade? Yeah.

Of course, I don't think he was using a YaBB SE bridge back then, which could solve the problem of switching. If we bridged YaBB SE to an updated version, I think we might be able to keep all the database info. But, I'm not 100% sure.

EDIT:: By bridge, I mean converter >.> Sorry about that.

Yeah... starting over would suck...
I remember that too.
Everyone was all for the idea, but now...
I mean, if we could convert everything, does that mean we could more advanced things?
This IS a really old site after all... What, 6 or 7 years old?
Well, THIS version began in 2005, so I don't know.
I'm rambling here.
Anyways, I suppose I wouldn't mind updating if it meant we could keep everything.

Well, the idea of a converter is not having to lose the information. At least, I've come to understand that. My problem is, I'm not 100% sure about it. I'm trying to look it up now.

Yea, it would be cool if we could convert, if you use SMF it doesn't cost anything. But idk if you could get everything back with it though.

Uh... yes.

If only I could run a backup of the database. Then it wouldn't be so... potentially fatal, to try and upgrade it. I suppose I could also try and recreate it, in a lab setting, on my computer. Install YaBB SE 1.5.5, make a post or two and an account or two, then run the upgrade and see what happens. Hmm... I don't know.

I think the main point of upgrading is the security. It's not exactly safe, having such an old install. But on top of that, yes, there would be added features. We could maybe have a shoutbox. Maybe posting wouldn't kick you out of the topic   you were posting in. ( >:( ) And, a third thing!

EDIT:: I think maybe, I'll try to talk to Jack about all this. Get his opinion. Maybe we have nothing to worry about, eh? I'll get right on it.
