-so behind the times- I have Silent Hill 1 (well, PSx), 2, 3, and 4 for it so far (I need to get 0rigins just because the secret costumes are amazing) and I'm open for suggestions for games.
So far, in SH1, I'm absolutely nowhere because I need a PSx memory card. In SH2, I just watched PH RAEP. :C In SH3, I haven't started. In SH4, I'm totally awesome and at the Building World.

Ratchet and Clank series
Jak and Daxter series
and the Metal Gear Solid series.
Congratulations on your PS2! I think you'll quite enjoy it. I know I've enjoyed mine.
As for PS2 games, I agree with Gamefreak about the "Ratchet and Clank" series, and I have two additional recommendations: "Psychonauts" and "Katamari Damacy." I love them. They're really... different, and they're tons of fun. I also recommend "Ridge Racer" (if you like racing games even just a little bit) and "Rayman," (a gorgeous, albeit tough, 2D platformer), both of which are PS1 games.
Also, I got a few PS1 memory cards really cheaply on eBay; you might check there. Just try to get the Sony brand cards since they tend to be more reliable.

Yeah, we've had it for years... One of the first PS1 games we got, even. I think I may have gotten almost to Mister Dark's lair, but...man, that was quite a while ago.
May I recommend Okami?
I've heard that one's supposed to be awesome. If I remember correctly, I think one of her friends has it...
Oh, also, if you can find a cheap copy, you should check out "Rez." JQ can back me up on this one. It's a totally trippy-looking rail shooter that's supposed to be fantastic. The way it works is that when you shoot things, you make music, and the Dualshock 2 rumbles with the music. Combined with the trippy graphics, it's supposed to be an unequaled gaming experience. I want a copy of it, myself.
Well, if we're naming PS1 games as well, then I have to back the original Crash Bandicoot games.
They're hard games to find in the U.S., but if you see one, get a Wild Arms game.
Yeah, a friend of mine has Okami- I deeply love that game. I actually hadn't thought of getting it for the PS2, but I might as well, now. Give me something easy and fun to fall back on after playing Silent Hill games. XD

You may also like this underground title called Guitar Hero. It's pretty sick alright.
Erm...seriously though, any sleepers that I really enjoyed...Romancing SaGa is brilliant, amazing music. Check that out.
If you're going for Guitar Hero, go for 1 and 2, before the series sold out.
And another thing... The Legend of Dragoon. Get it. NAO.
My favorite game on it is SSX 3. Awesomest snowboarding game ever. And i also recommend Kingdom hearts 2. Also great.
Okami is great. I never got a chance to beat it, but I got close! And I only like the first three guitar hero games.
