As 2008 comes to a close, let's reminisce about this year in gaming.
Note: This isn't some award topic. It's just a discussion.
Lots of Xbox 360 and PS3 games out there... None of which I shall ever play for lack of either system.
Just about the only good one I got was Mario Kart Wii.
Metal Gear Solid 4.
Fallout 3.
CoD4(?)
Apollo Justice was good, but...not the best.
Who could forget "Super Smash Bros. Brawl?" My first real taste of online gaming. Then, of course, there's "LittleBigPlanet." Lots of fun, and it gives the player the ability to create their own levels and share them with the world! Those are actually the only two games I got this year that were released this year; all the others I got were released one or two years ago.
2008 was a very memorable gaming year for me because of me getting a PS3. I very much look forward to what games we'll be getting in the future.
Yeah, Super Smash Bros. Brawl.
...
DURRRR.
For me personally, I've got:
Metal Gear Solid 4: Guns of the Patriots
Apollo Justice: Ace Attorney
Super Smash Bros Brawl
LittleBigPlanet
Left 4 Dead and Bioshock, pretty much. I haven't played a lot of Left 4 Dead but it's pretty fun with friends. Bioshock is just amazing. It's a little aggravating how you take damage (there's a red flash on the screen, but I tend to not register it and get damaged really badly really quickly- you can also attack through it, though) but the plotline and enemies are really awesome. (not done yet, though)
Silent Hill 5 was good, but not... that good compared to others in the series. They did improve a lot of things (dodge button ftw) both mechanically and graphically, but the plotline and monsters were... pretty tame. The industrial ambiance instead of "bloody meatsacks/corpses everywhere" was a nice change in pace, but I think I'm one of the few who think this.
Oh, and Viva Pinata's sequel. They have hyenas now, dumb though they may look. Geckies are pretty cute, too.
I've really wanted to play "Left 4 Dead," but because of Valve and their hatred of the PS3, my computer's inability to play most games, and my lack of an Xbox 360, it's not gonna happen, which makes me sad.
If we can discuss games that we've played this year as opposed to just games released this year, then "The Orange Box" definitely tops my list as the best.
Let's not forget Bioshock. You must choose Bioshock. After all, a man chooses. A slave obeys.
Didn't Bioshock come out in 2007?
And, well, I haven't played any games released in 2008. >>
PS3 version came out in 2008, making it fair game.
Fallout 3 definatly.
Okami (?)
SSBB
World of Goo for the Wii
Okami was released on the Wii April 2008.
Gears of War 2 really was tremendous...played it at Lemming's a while ago.

Gears was a good game, but many of my friends make it seem like the LoZ series. How about you guys?
I forgot about Bioshock for a second there.
I have no idea how you can compare Gears of War and Zelda. They are nothing alike. I am baffled.
I'm just trying to show how much my friends are glorifying Gears by comparing it to a great series.
Oh, so they don't actually say it's like Zelda, got it.
Well, I think it really is a fantastic series, albeit in a much different genre than Zelda. The gameplay is some of the smoothest I've ever seen, and they really stepped up the storyline from the first game, it's not horrificaly bad anymore. They still can't seem to make a difficult boss, though >.> Most of the firefights are more trouble for me than the boss battles.
Entertainment Weekly's list of the best games of the year are as followed:
1) Wii Fit (Nintendo)
2) LittleBigPlanet (Sony Computer Entertainment Europe)
3) Grand Theft Auto IV (Rockstar Games)
4) Braid (Microsoft)
5) Rock Band 2 (MTV Games)
6) Madden NFL '09 All-Play (EA Sports)
7) LEGO Indiana Jones: The Original Adventures (LucasArts)
8) Pure (Disney Intereactive Studios)
9) Dead Space (Electronic Arts)
10) iPOD Touch (Apple)
Are you going to copy that opinion, or will you be forming your own? Because we (or at least I) don't care about Entertainment Weekly's list of the best games of the year. What did you think were the best?
Sorry, but just about every game on there doesn't even come close to the best games of the year for me. Especially Wii Fit as number one. That's hardly a game; it's great, sure, but not a game. Then again, it's Entertainment Weekly we're talking about.
Huh, forgot about Wii Fit.
Well, I can't form an honest opinion on it anyway, as I only set up a profile to test the Wii Balance Board for my mom. And like Shika said, it's not really a game; it's more of a fitness tool.
Which I probably should use more often. ::)
Besides Littlebigplanet, I'd say that's the top 10 games for people who aren't gamers list.
I mean, Rock Band 2 is great and all, but to completely disregard:
Brawl
Metal Gear
Gears
Mario (Did Galaxy come out this year?)
Left 4 Dead
is to ignore gaming.
Um, Super Mario Sunshine was on the Gamecube. I think you're thinking about Super Mario Galaxy, which came out in 2007.
Mario Kart Wii, however, was released in 2008.
Darn it, got to edit my post.
I get my titles mixed up.

10) iPOD Touch (Apple)
that is an iPod.
Also, I'm wondering, is this
America's top 10 games, or the World's? Or Japan? Because regions have different tastes...
I'm gonna have to say Brawl was up on my list.
Also God of War; Chains of Olympus, Left for Dead, Guitar Hero 3. I say Guitar hero just because it had some sweet, sweet songs.
True, a lot of stuff comes out in Japan that doesn't reach America.
I really wish I played more of the modern games, but I'm still playing all the older Final Fantasies and such, I'm so behind on the times :P
1. Gears of War 2
2. Super Smash Brothers Brawl
3. Bioshock (just from what I've seen Lemming play)
4. I've already run out of 2008 games that I played...
I forgot about BioShock. I heard it was crazy.
And I was searching on google, and alot of people put Halo 3 as the best. :o
i would say fallout 3 is the best game to come out this year.
with its free walking do anything you want game, thats what i like about it, and the path the elder scrolls set was great because it was a new face and a new body to look at things.
when i looked at fallouts past the gameplay it looked poor but when bethsoft got the rights i knew it would make fallout 3 in to a big new world and many things to see and do and don't forget every game has a down side.
and i hope you guys get to play it, thank you
I'll also go ahead and mention Kingdom Hearts Re:Chain of Memories and Animal Crossing: City Folk.
I don't have City Folk, but I had the first Animal Crossing for DS, and it was like the never-ending game.
Awesome.
Best New Game this year: Tossup between Fallout 3 or Left 4 Dead, or Rock Band 2.
Best Old game that I played this year: Oblivion, or Orange Box.
I played Left 4 Dead. It was great. I even bought it. It is up there with Fallout 3 and Bioshock. Below, of course, but not by too far
Super smash bros brawl, and star wars the force unleashed. These were my favorites for wii. :)
Accually, other than brawl and and a few others, nintendo was seriously slacking this year... :(
Brawl and Mario kart definitely top my list this year. Actually, I got many awesome games this year, but most didn't come out this year.
Wii
Brawl tops my list
Mario Kart Wii makes it
City Folk is cool
XBOX 360
Left 4 Dead takes the cake
Fable 2 is cool
Mirror's Edge is sweet
PS3
Left 4 Dead
MGS4
CoD4
Overall Top
Left 4 Dead
SSBB
CoD4
I believe Mirror's Edge deserves an honorable mention as well.
Dead space is hardcore if your like really creepy games. Not a lot of scary stuff but the story is scary. not Bioshock scary though. Bioshock is better. Also if we're talking about old games too then who can forget ALttP of OoT <-best games ever.
