Title: Dogs
Post by: DW on December 19, 2008, 09:39:40 PM
I decided I want to talk about dogs. So we're going to talk about dogs now. If you try to talk about cats instead or try to direct it as "Well I prefer frogs to dogs" or something like that I'll delete your post. So then.

I want a dog. We were supposed to get a dog two years ago when we got a house, but apparently Mom changed her mind once we got the house. That was a bad time for her to change her mind. Had my hopes up and everything.

Anyone else like dogs?

And I'll go ahead and take care of Tacheon's post right here: "I like dogs because they are furry and doesn't afraid of anything."

Dogs is plural.  It would be "don't afraid of anything". :\

We got a dog named Chai.  She's half Golden Retriever, half Cocker Spaniel, but she has a black tongue, so we call her "Chai Chow Tongue".  Fun to say.

In other words, she's a **** retriever.

Tacheon, you have no idea how much I love you.

I'm not sure whether I prefer big or small dogs. It kind of depends on the situation. I love big dogs, I grew up with them in Utah, we always had two or so at a time, lots of fun to play with. Sometimes a small dog is nice though, like my grandparents' dachsund. Then again, he's really quiet, and most small dogs bark like crazy. But it's nice to be able to snuggle and rest with them.

I like dogs...when they're not mine.  My dogs like to bark at the neighbors (which we try to discourage) and they tend to wake up my dad in the middle of the night to go outside.  They like to lie down in the most inconvenient places (i.e., in the middle of commonly traveled areas), and they won't leave us alone after my mom goes for groceries until they get their treat.  Peanut sheds like crazy, especially during the spring and fall months.

But otherwise, they're kind of cool.

Peanut is a golden retriever and labrador mix, with a bit of chow, I think.  Misty has beagle in her, and something else, but we don't know; I think there's some hound, because she has a deep bark.

Peanut was roaming around my former elementary school, and the then vice-principal took him in for a while.  When she couldn't find an owner, she offered him to my mom, who was working in the library at the time.

We got Misty a few years later, when my mom began work as a dental assistant.  She belonged to one of my mom's patients and we got her because the patient's daughter (or was it her son?  I can't remember; one of them was an in-law) was having a baby and she wasn't sure how Misty would act around it.

Personally, I think golden retrievers and Siberian huskies are the most beautiful dogs out there.  If I ever become crazy enough to get a dog of my own, it would be one of those two breeds.

Man, I love huskies. One of my friends (haha, yeah right) in Elementary school had this husky that was just a few months old. I went over to his house one time and I was just awed at how beautiful it was. The eyes I remember the most, such a bright blue. They're generally well-behaved compared to a lot of other dogs too, very smart. Love how their fur feels, too.

One of my aunts have a dog that's a Siberian husky (at least, I think it's a Siberian husky; it's been a while since I've seen it).  It's brown and white, and on his forehead is a white mark that's shaped like a three-leaf clover.  It's pretty cool.

I have a white and honey colored Shih-Tzu with two different colored eyes.  Her name is Zelda, but her name registered in the AKC is "Zelda the Lion Tamer" (pun on the mythology behind her breed).  She is currently in Conneticut with grandma, since my parents are out being military and stuff, and I am in New York being a student and stuff.  Good thing, though, is that I am going to go pick my Zelda up on either Saturday or Sunday and keep her during the Christmas Break.

I like big dogs personally, especially Siberian Huskies and Rotts, but I didn't have the opportunity to get one while I was dog-picking, since we didn't have much space at the time.  I knew Zelda was the one the moment I saw her though.

That is insane. Do you have any pictures?

And do Shih-Tzu's bark a lot? I've heard a lot about them, what are they like around the house? Might consider getting one when I'm older...suppose it depends on college dorm space and rules and all that.

Most college dorms don't allow pets.

Same goes for most apartments I believe.

Some do though...and I could always just get one that doesn't bark.

>.>

<.<

I like Border Collies too...my aunt used to have two, a black and a red one. The red one was my favorite, he was so sweet...while the black one would be jumping everywhere, even inside, the red one would just come and lay his head on your lap...<3 Loved them both though. But then the red one got hit by a car and the black one died a week later out of grief.

Well, I know they are hypoallergenic, since their fur is more like hair, because it does not shed and it grows very much like it.  They don't bark much, especially if you train them.  I know mine barks at weird noises and whenever she hears a knock on the door/the doorbell rings.  Other than that, she is quiet.

They are cheerful, very playful, and sweet.  Mine used to lay down right next to me at night.  They don't need much space, as long as you walk it often and sometimes go do some exercise with it.  They can get a bit protective though.  It's like a little lion (Shih-Tzu means "lion dog" btw  :))

Sorry I'm ranting and that I sound biased.
Title: Re: Dogs

No, I don't think you're all that biased. If I got a Shih-Tzu I'm sure I'd be saying the same thing. I mean, the only real bias is whether you like dogs or not and if they dog is your kind of dog. I like all dogs, so I'd pretty much enjoy anything. I don't really see any downsides to dogs, it's hard to when they don't have inherently evil natures or anything. And rant all you want, this thread is for dogs.

It sounds like Shih-Tzu are very nice dogs though...definitely one of the more companion type, yeah? Hypoallergenic is nice too, though I don't have allergies, I have some friends that do. Little barking is always a plus. Of course, a lot of it is training.

My dog Karma is fat and part German Shepherd and part Pit Bull- she's gotten into a bit of trouble because she's fiercely loyal (almost tore another dog in two for barking at me) but she's really a sweet dog. Unfortunately, with all the dogs near our house, we had to leave her up in San Antonio (where she was born and raised) during the hurricane Ike evacuation.

She's happier up there, now, though I think her protectiveness is going to be worse with my grandpa and his badly injured foot... (he was the one who took her off the streets, after all)

I also take care of dogs for money sometimes- right now I'm taking care of six in one house. One has a really nasty tumor on her left shoulder, it's huge- she also has a massive boil on her right paw, but we're giving her medicine to help with the pain and swelling. There's also a greyhound (we have to put a detergent bottle on his collar so he won't run) and a chow (he only pees on the truck's tires) and a labrador and a shy little curly haired dog and Luna the fat blob that loves me.

Well, I think some pets are allowed. When My dad had an apartment, we had a goldfish and a lizard there.

Anyway, I have a dog named Nala (from the lion king), and she's a boxer. She turns 5 next month!

I do not, although I did ask my aunt for some.  We're supposed to go up to Pennsylvania to visit my mom's side of the family, so I'll ask her for some pics when I see her.

A family friend used to have a basset hound; for as long as I can remember him Boats was old, and we would play with his ears.  My brother stopped liking him after Boats ate my brother's sandwich at this one party. :P

Unfortunately, he had to be put down a few years back.  So our friend got a toy poodle puppy.  Harley is a hyper little thing.  Whenever we come over, he's jumping all over everyone.  We dog-sat him a couple of times.  The first time we had him over, that first night I had to leave the door to my room upon and sleep on the bottom bunk so he could curl up next to me, but every night after that (including the second time we dog-sat him), he would sleep in my parents' room.  He's also the kind of dog to jump up onto your lap and just lay there curled up in a ball.

For the pets in apartments question, I think most apartments will allow small dogs, cats, and caged animals.

We have a Jack Russell Terrier.
His name is Jack.

We got him after he was abandoned in some city, his tail was docked as well. We've had him for years now and he's quite old. He hasn't aged well and is nearly completely deaf and has very poor eyesight.
I LOVE him. We're very close.

Wow! Rescued from the streets. We just got my dog from the animal shelter. So yours is pretty inspiring. :)
Reminds me of this game called Radiata Stories, there's a character named Jack Russell (he's not a dog, just a human. ;) ) and his father's name is Cairn Russell (is that a type of dog breed, too?)

Also, he gave me a gift, too. It's a box of chocolate candies.

What does this mean? Also, Jack Russell's are some of the most energetic dogs I've ever seen. One of my best friends has one named Spot, he grew up with us...man, memories ;_; I need a moment.

I have never heard of a Cairn Russell.

I'm pretty sure there is a dog breed called a Cairn Terrier, I know someone with one, they're very cute.
And yeah his tail had been cut off, well we presumed it had anyway since his tail is like a quarter  of the size of a normal jack russell, and docking the tail used to be quite a common thing to do with terriers.

QuoteAlso, Jack Russell's are some of the most energetic dogs I've ever seen. One of my best friends has one named Spot, he grew up with us...man, memories ;_; I need a moment.
Yeah when we first got him he was absolutely wild, he was very energetic and used to run away a lot, but he always came back on his own. But as he has gotten older (he's probably about 13 or 14 now) he has slowed down a lot.

Man, I love my aunt's dogs. Miniature Schnauzzers. Some of the friendliest dogs you'll ever meet, and extremely well behaved. I dunno if it comes with the breed or if they were just well trained, but they never bark (though they howl for a few seconds sometimes when they're really happy and excited) and lay down nice and calm when you stop playing. If I get a dog, it'll have to be a small one, so a schnauzzer's looking good. :)

According to Wikipedia, "dogs are dichromats and have color vision equivalent to red-green color blindness in humans."

Dogs can pick out white cars and chase only that color car if they want to.  Why they would want to is beyond me.

And even if dogs were completely colorblind, white is still on the greyscale.
