Title: Languages?
Post by: Pyrgusfinn on June 02, 2009, 09:00:46 PM
So I was curious to see if anyone else here has the urge to learn several languages?
I personally love languages, and I want to learn several of them.
Unfortunately the only language that I am currently fluent in is English, however, I am in the process of learning Spanish and American Sign Language.

Some other languages I would love to learn are French, Italian, German, Russian, Mandarin Chinese, etc.

I started learning Latin in tenth grade, and I did well with the content of the class, however a personal experience with it has made me shy of continuing my education with that particular language.

I have have vague notions of French and Japanese, but not much to navigate in an environment ruled by the language. Spanish is my native language, so that's beyond discussion.
I would like to perfect those two languages and learn Mandarin.

And English...

I chose Other. My reason?

C++.

...What? I think it should count. It is a language, after all...

I LOVE languages. But Language Oral exams are the scariest things ever!
Fluent in English (Of course)
I'm pretty good at French, I can hold my own in a conversation, know all the tenses and how to work them. I really just need a wider vocabulary and learn more grammar rules.
Plus I visit France every year (even though I never end up speaking french because I'm always with someone who is fluent.

I'm starting to learn Italian next year at school at GCSE level, I'm taking it instead of having General Suidies lessons, even though I still have to take the General Studies Exam ><
So hopefully I'll get as good at Italian as I am at French now (but I'll be better at french by then because I am taking french for  A level).

I studied Russian for a year but the teacher left so i had to stop. I knew the cyrillic alphabet (written and typed) and basic present tense verb structure but i've forgotten it all now. I'd love to do it again at some point. But I can say "she listens to the radio, no, she talks on the phone!")

I studied Spanish for a couple of years but dropped it because I preffered French and didn't want to take both, so I have forgotten most of it.

And I tried to teach myself Japoanese once but got bored, may try agian at some point.

So Basically fluent in English, know French, will know Italian. Have very limited knowledge of: Spanish, Russian, Japanese.

I took two years of Spanish in high school, but I've forgotten most of what I learned.

There are so many languages I want to learn, if only because I opted to use real world languages for the races of Hyrule in my fanfic (never mind my reasoning).  Let's see....

Hylian = Japanese
Sheikah = English (looks like I'm good on this one!)
Old Sheikah = Russian
Gerudo = German
Twili = Latin (I took three years of this back in high school, and I retain a rough understanding; it also helps that I copied some vital charts from the back of my Latin book)
Faerie = Gaelic
Goron = Spanish
Zora = French

Latin aside, I seem to have trouble learning new languages; I think it would help if I got the chance to regularly speak it with someone who has it as his/her native tongue.

Back in my senior year of high school, I did start developing a language for the Ancient Hylians, and that will see use in my original writing among my anthro races, who all get their name from this language.  I also recently started work on three other languages; though, thankfully, I'm not going to try and expand the dictionary to what I have for Ancient Hylian.

Same as me.

I was looking up Rosetta Stone for Japanese, it was around $250.

It's crazy.

250 seems like nothing if it really opens you the world of Japanese.
