Title: Once Upon a Mattress...
Post by: DW on September 08, 2009, 11:01:33 PM
So I was just cast in this fall's musical as the Jester. It is a fairly large role with parts in a lot of songs and a solo song with a really long dance break and tap dance.

Party.

Already said it over AIM, but I'll say it again here.

Congrats on getting the part.  And as a bonus:  Hope you do well.

It turns out like already ten people have quit before the first rehearsal.

Egad.

We usually lose people during a musical, but not this soon...most everyone quit because they either didn't get the lead or they were angry about the people who did get the leads. Not pretty. Before I saw the cast list I walked up to one of the guys who I thought would be cast as the King, said "Hi" and got a "screw you" in response.

Some people take it really personally when they aren't cast :-[

oh yes, I know. I wasn't expecting ten people though! I know there are usually a few who drop the first day, but TEN! woah. man.

I guess people can just be sore a lot but good luck and don't pay attention to them, they probably are jealous

We actually ended up getting lucky, the same number of guys dropped it as girls, so the balance wasn't thrown off. Though we don't have any good tenors except ones that are cast in lead roles, like the Minstrel, Harry, and I. It's...yeah. Most of the Altos don't really sing either, just kinda mumble. Hopefully it's because they're new and they'll break out of their shell.

You know, you could always take the easy way out and just use microphones.

We mic the leads, and put out floor mics, but we don't have enough to mic every person in the show. Though most of our leads probably don't need the mics and could probably be heard with just the floor mics.

I'm pretty sure part of acting in theater is projecting your voice so everyone in the auditorium can hear it.

Nearly every school uses mics now, HNS. Some professional plays that have very large theaters use them, too.

We only use them in musicals for solo parts, though, as you've got to be able to hear them over the live orchestra that's even closer to the audience than the actors. I can't stand it when they mic normal plays though. I'm glad we don't do that.
