Titanic - $1,842,879,955 worldwide over an entire year
Avatar - $1,602,168,000 worldwide in over a month
It's impossible to avoid by this time, Avatar will become the highest grossing film yet within the next month.
Still, tickets in 1997 cost almost a third of what they cost today, so Avatar won't surpass Titanic in viewership.
The time frames are substantially different, though--about a 12:1 ratio between the two. Besides, considering the population has been increasing exponentially, the viewership is directly implied to increase in intensity, too.
There's a good reason Avatar's grossing so high though, it was an astounding movie.
Except according to the people who feel politically offended by it.
Or people like me who don't really want to see it.

It was a great movie, but was a bit ruined for me due to the anticipation and general hype.
So, as of right now, Avatar is 6 million dollars behind Titanic. (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_highest-grossing_films) Well, it figures that the one who dethrones Cameron is... well, Cameron.
It's surpassed Titanic by 15 million dollars, and with only 142 million dollars left, I'm guessing Avatar will be the first movie to break two million.
