Title: ...DARN YOU, M. NIGHT SHAM-WOW!!!!! D:<
Post by: MagmarFire on June 30, 2010, 08:09:25 PM
Penny Arcade reference, I know. Couldn't help it; it's kind of appropriate.

Well, as many of us Avatar fans know, M. Night Shyamalan of The 6th Sense fame took the reigns for the film adaptation of Book 1: Water. Apparently, there are some reviews in. The verdict?

TERRIBLE.

...

...Are you kidding me? If the reviews are true and you really did mess it up...how? How in the world could you have possibly messed up the adaptation of one of the most beloved shows in American animation!? Yeah, I know I wasn't expecting it to do the original show justice, because it's just that good (http://tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pmwiki.php/SugarWiki/Ptitleh7wzr92t4un4?from=Main.SoCoolItsAwesome), but...wow. I did not expect for it to bomb worse than this.

Shyamalan, I suggest you run before the Avatar fanboys and -girls take chase and use the heat boiling their blood to Firebend your hair off. ...Oh, wait, they probably already have. Not much longer now...

Tacheon, as a fellow Avatar fan, how can you take this absurdity!?

Yes, I also realize that it's a bit early to tell, but if Roger Ebert and at least ten others are giving this thing even less than good reviews, then I don't see the trend turning around anytime soon. I can only hope this is a case of Critical Dissonance (http://tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pmwiki.php/Laconic/CriticalDissonance), but... *headdesk*

I've said from the beginning that if Shyamalan didn't pull this off, there would be hell to pay. It looks like it's time for you pay up, man.

EDIT: But this Twitter makes everything better. (http://twitter.com/TVTango/statuses/14509554829) *starts (silently) squealing like a fangirl*

Of course it's terrible. Look at all the violence.

make love not war man

Suppose you're like me and never watched the original show.  Would you still say the movie is horrible?

Admittedly, I haven't seen it, either, but...really, I don't think I can bring it upon myself to do it anymore when I heard quite unanimously that they managed to make another Eragon movie out of one of my absolute favorite TV shows of all freaking time. It sounds like it has a bunch of the same problems that Eragon did, like a muddled storyline (I even heard it was rewritten in a few areas) and highly-restricted time.

While they may have made another Eragon they may not have, truth is critics exist to find the bad in lovable things. For example, a critics' take on TTGL

What is with this show? The main character isn't who you think he is and the humans are constantly defying the laws of physics Because they can? And what is with the art fluctuation? It goes from Clean to pencilly to... Whatever the hell that was in episode 4!  I Mean, can't the be persistent? And that ending, my god the ending.

If you saw this Mags would you have watched it? No instead you heard me gush about the awesome awesomsauceness of it and you loved the show. The same could go for CLANNAD.

Critic's view:
Key lost me on this one. I thought there other works were confusing, but man. It looks good, sure, Kyoani does it but god, the overused Moe. And Key can you make a Heroine that isn't sick all the time? I don't think you can. And god that ending? What happened, I don't get it AT ALL. And it strays so far off the Visual Novels path that I got confused. And they think throwing in some OVAs that complete some of the visual novels paths is alright? No emotion whatsoever KyoAni. Nice job. Not.

If you heard that would you have seen it? I wouldn't have, and that stuff is all in CLANNAD. But it doesn't stop me from loving it.

So go see that movie Mags. I know I am, I don't like movie critics. At All. AT ALL. So I'm gonna go see it after work tomorrow.

Edit: Critic 2 forgot to Bash on CLANNAD's disaster that you can see coming for 15 Episodes away.

Frankly, I'm afraid to see it.  M. Night Shyguy has been slowly slipping ever since the Village.  Look at the Happening.  He tried making an R movie, but from the dialogue it's obvious that he's completely forgotten how normal human beings talk.  However, I am still excited to watch it just because no matter what the critics say, I'm going to have to make up my own mind on the subject.

Well, Gurren Lagann and Clannad are different cases because they're nigh-universally acclaimed. (Outliers nearly always exist, you see. Just look at Ocarina of Time and Brawl.) After seeing how highly they're rated, and especially how much Gurren Lagann is referenced in popular culture, I'd have no problems seeing them after reading one or two bad reviews for them, other than from financial limitations (for the latter). Fortunately, that's not going to be as much of a problem.

This movie, however, is nigh-universally hated. I really don't want to see a disappointing disgrace of an adaptation for Mike and Bryan's brilliant masterpiece, especially if I have to look forward to different name pronunciations, awful pacing ("Siege of the North" taking up half of the movie? Are they serious?), and event cutting.

DON'T SEE IT IF YOU HAVEN'T TRUST ME!!!! Even if you've never seen the show you will be able to point out way too many things wrong, and for those who have seen it they even say peoples names wrong!!! I mean come on guys all you had to do was copy what the people from the cartoon called them... And I swear IF he does get the chance too make the second book and IF Bumi is not how he should be, I will kill.... >_> I am completely baffled that they even let him make it into a movie... A monkey on drugs could do better...

Take a look at the link in the OP. There's a rumor saying that Mike and Bryan are working on a new Nickelodeon project and that it's an indirect sequel to the first series.

Meow.

That reminds me, Spookie has been sitting outside the front door for a while meowing at me.

I tried letting her in just in case that's what she wanted, but naturally it wasn't, so she ran away.

Not big surprise.

I went and saw the movie just to see how bad it was.  I didn't think it was terrible, but it wasn't good.  Maybe it was because I was expecting it to be a lot worse.  Also, keep in mind that I do not follow the TV series, though.  But yeah, the acting in the movie was pretty bad and some of the camera work seemed kinda odd.

Also, M. Night Shammammogram.

That's...interesting.

Seriously, that's really an interesting concept. It seems like they're...actually caring about continuity. O.o

Other than that, I don't have much opinion until more's developed.

I don't think Drake Bell can play Timmy Turner :/

He's a pretty limited actor in the things he can do, and Timmy's personality...no, I don't think it'll go well. Then again, it is...23 year old Timmy Turner?

Good gods, the plot sounds horrible.  But then, I'm not a fan of the show in the first place.

They have Jason Alexander playing Cosmo.  Jason Alexander played George Constanza on Seinfield.  George was friends with Cosmo Kramer.

My thoughts exactly. To be honest, with the exception of Drake Bell, that does sound like something I would see.
