Title: Half-birthday present go?
Post by: DW on July 23, 2010, 08:25:07 PM
So, I just got 358/2 Days for my birthday on January 3rd.

I leave for college on August 15th.

I may be gone forever.

Wait, so you just got a birthday present sixth months after your actual birthday?

By the way, try to survive in college.

Enjoy 358/2 Days! =D

What are you going to college for?  I think I might have asked this before, but I forgot.

Acting. It's the New York Conservatory for Dramatic Arts, to be specific.

And thanks, I just got out of the tutorial section. Zip slasher is irritating. I want to beat him at my low level though. Shouldn't be too hard, just long.

The other, larger versions of the Zip Slasher (such as the Heat Saber and the Stalwart Blade) are easier to defeat; they have more attacks than the Zip Slasher, but all are easily avoidable, and most are easily blocked.  One of the attacks is similar to the Zip Slasher's lunge attack, but they gather energy first; you'll know what I'm talking about once you see it.  That's your cue to get ready to block it; if you succussfully block that attack, the Heartless will be knocked onto it's bottom in a stunned state, and you can deal more damage to it during this time.  I highly recommend you get Perfect Block for this as soon as you can; Perfect Block prevents you from recoiling if you time the block correctly.  Block Counter may or may not help depending on the Keyblade (or other weapon if in Mission Mode).  Blizzard Block is always good, though; frozen Heartless receive triple damage.  However, I've only ever managed to freeze the Zip Slasher; heh, in one battle against it, every time I blocked its attack, it froze.

Well, I did beat it. Now I'm in Agrabah and I'm finding myself a little bit frustrated with the leveling system. It seems a little odd to have leveling be done with the panels...honestly, I just need to spend some time fiddling around with panels in the first place. I've been rushing a bit.

Always equip a level up panel, even if you have to lose a spell or ability to do so.  And if you're getting the panels that double, triple, or quadruple the amount of levels you go up for each level up panel you link to it, always use them.

What might also help is a ring called Frozen Blight; it slightly boosts your magic, greatly boosts your defense, and gives you the Blizzard Finish ability, which might freeze a Heartless upon the completion of a combo attack.  I don't think you have access to it yet, as Agrabah is the first world after Twilight Town, but get it as soon as you can; it's an item you have to synthesize.

I just unlocked challenges and tried doing those. Gah. I WOULD have gotten all three sigils on the one with the Zip Slasher, but I made the stupid mistake of using my Limit Break on him.

Post by: MagmarFire on July 25, 2010, 10:29:49 AM
Good luck getting all the sigils. Some of the challenges are freaking sadistic.

One of them involves a beat-'em-up chase to the end of the level...and you have to do it in freaking ninety seconds.

I really ought to be collecting the ingrediants for Thundagas and Aerogas for that challenge, but I doubt it would make any difference anyway since the shoulder buttons on my DS hardly ever work anymore.

I've been trying to do the challenge for Mission 89.  I already got three sigils for the special challenge and two for the regular, but the Powered Armor is making it really difficult to avoid getting hit less than five times so I can get the third sigil.  Thundagas and Thunders have been helping, but the arms are still a bit unpredictable at times.  And then there's Orcus....Good gods, Orcus just won't stay still.  I'm going to have to switch over to Fire for him.  To make room for all of these spells, I'm going to have to get rid of some abilities.

Trying to avoid getting hit for the challenge with the Crimson Pranksters is a pain as well, if only because Roxas loses HP on the ground.  It wouldn't be much of a problem if my shoulder buttons, you know, worked.

Maybe the next time I'm over at my friend's house, I'll take a break from Kingdom Hearts and borrow his DS Lite; I think his L button is working properly.

Oh, hey, Shika, don't forget to work on getting Mission Crowns as well, even if you have to go at it solo.  You'll get some gear panels, spell panels, and item panels, as well as Slot Releasers so you'll have more room to equip panels.  It's easy to get 358 Mission Crowns all by yourself, and once you do, you can buy the Limit Pass item in the shop, which will let you configure how Limit Breaks work in Mission Mode.  It is freaking sweet.  With the Limit Pass, you can drop to the Limit Break threshold in Mission Mode and not have it diminish every time you use a Limit Break.
Title: Re: Half-birthday present go?
Post by: DW on July 25, 2010, 12:33:29 PM
I don't really use the Limit Break that much...mostly because you still take damage during it, which is pretty irritating because they get about five open shots on me during it. I try to just heal out of Limit Break range instead of using it.

Mission Mode is pretty awesome. Zexion is terrible, though. At least, the way I was using him. I probably should have loaded him with as much magic as possible. I used Lexaeus for the Endurance mission. It felt like cheating.
Title: Re: Half-birthday present go?
Post by: Hi no Seijin on July 25, 2010, 01:38:59 PM
Yeah, Zexion is more suited for magic.

Shame about you not using Limit Breaks, but to each their own style.  Once you get some more HP and defense, though, reconsider using them, especially against bosses.  You know, when they're not in the middle of attacking you.

Orcus is easier when you remember that right after the finishing shockwave of its flying sword attack, there's a window of opportunity where if you hit it, it'll be stunned for a few seconds, allowing you to get a few good hits in.

Yeah, I know.

Got that final sigil for Mission 89 not too long ago, actually.  Only needed 9 level 5 Thundagas to subdue the Powered Armor with as little as zero hits taken; unfortunately, on that try, Orcus gladly hit me six times. :-*

The Veil Lizard took plenty of damage from Thunder once I froze it with Blizzard Block; he was pretty easy to avoid taking damage from.

Two quick Fire spells for the Poison Plant, and two or three for the Gigas Shadow, which screwed me up on one try because I misjudged how far away it was when I tried to let off a Fire spell while it was beginning its leaping attack.  Thankfully, I had more than enough Fire spells to take out Orcus; with that one it became a matter of keeping enough distance between us to safely cast Fire, preferably defeating it before it threw its sword.

This one time I would have had it if not for the Stalwart Blade jumping up into the air.  I had taken off the Air Dash panel, and it turns out that Air Dashing is the best way to avoid that attack.

Now I just need more Thundaga panels for Missions 74 and 75 so I can finish up the challenges in Twilight Town.

I've played most of Chain of Memories, but gave up on it because of the card battle system, so 358/2 Days is the first Kingdom Hearts game I've played through beginning to end.  Right now (at least on the Sundays I can make it over to my friend's house), I'm playing through the first Kingdom Hearts, and I'm watching the cutscenes from Re:Chain of Memories, so I'm starting to better understand the story in 358/2 Days.

Speaking of watching CoM cutscenes....Hey, Mags, in 358/2 Days, after that first mission in Agrabah (I think it's the first mission in Agrabah), Roxas faints.  Would that have something to do with Vexen creating a fake memory of Twilight Town for Sora?
Title: Re: Half-birthday present go?
Post by: MagmarFire on July 26, 2010, 08:45:36 PM
Hmm... Actually, the memory Vexen gave Sora wasn't fake. In Re:Chain of Memories, Vexen states that the C.O. Twilight Town was a result of the "other side" of Sora's memory--the part that Roxas shared, being a Nobody (well, Axel kinda killed him before he could mention Roxas's existence at all).

Personally, I think it was a result of Sora starting his year-long reconstruction of his memories. It's stated in KHII that the process of memory reconstruction affected Roxas in tandem (which, of course, you see the effects of throughout the game with those staticky flashes of Sora in the bottom screen). Assuming my memory doesn't fail me, that would probably be around the time that the massacre at C.O. was breaking news, which possibly would also be around the time Sora started his slumber or when Nami really got busy with it.

Ah.

Sort of hard to line up events when 358/2 Days is the only game that distinguish between days.

That goes for just about every game I've ever played. :P

Oh, hey, was Reverse/Rebirth, Riku's story, in the original GBA version of Chain of Memories, or just the PS2 remake?
Title: Re: Half-birthday present go?
Post by: DW on July 26, 2010, 10:03:43 PM
Reverse/Rebirth was in the original.

And yeah, Castle Oblivion was only one day, wasn't it?

Man it's driving me insane trying to figure out who Xion is a Nobody of.

Hmmm...hey...with 358/2 Days out, we can figure out how long after Hollow Bastion it took for Sora to get to Castle Oblivion...How long was Roxas around before he joined the Organization?

Roxas started on Day 1, if I recall correctly. Not that he really remembers.

As for your first question, I don't think so.

93, I think. Somewhere around there.

Hey, that reminds me. I still need to use my work money for a PSP. Kinda lazy to get one right now, though.

Rest easy when I say that I'll a-be trying to get one before September 7.

358/2 Days does indeed have 93 missions, Mags.  If you want to include challenges and special challenges in that number, then you're on your own.

I know what you mean, Shika.  There are only a few games for the PSP I want, most of them tactical RPGs.

As for getting a used PSP and installing custom firmware on it....I think you need to do a better job of selling the idea, TW and Mags.  What can be hacked and why should we risk screwing up the game and/or system doing it?
Title: Re: Half-birthday present go?
Post by: Twilight Wolf on July 27, 2010, 11:31:57 PM
Custom firmware lets you do far more than a PSP can normally. My biggest draw was this: if you have original PlayStation games you want to play on-the-go, they're very easy to convert into PSP-compatible games, most of which run with no major issues. There are emulators you can run, too, many of them excellent, so if you feel like playing some older games, no sweat. The PSP has pretty much perfect Sega Genesis emulation, for example -- it even emulates the Sega CD flawlessly!

You also more options when it comes to customization -- for example, you can download custom themes that change the way your interface looks. One popular theme makes your PSP look like MacOS X.

I think you also have the ability to back up your PSP UMDs to your computer and copy them onto a Memory Stick so you don't have to pack discs with you, only Memory Sticks. I've never tried this myself, but it's an option.

As for risk to your system, it's very low provided you have good directions and the proper accessories -- all mostly a matter of loading some files, using a special kind of battery, and pressing the right buttons. Idiot-proof, mostly.

^ Say, is it as straightforward as putting homebrew on a Wii? For that matter, is it mainly just a software mod like Wii hacking?
Title: Re: Half-birthday present go?
Post by: Twilight Wolf on July 28, 2010, 05:08:36 AM
Never done any Wii hacking, but I can't imagine it's any more difficult at all.

Like I said, it's mostly a matter of loading some files onto a Memory Stick, using a Pandora battery, and pressing the right buttons. Making your own Pandora battery is probably the most risky part as it involves opening the battery and doing some soldering -- however, the Pandora or tool battery can be purchased pre-made fairly cheaply instead of having to make your own -- that is, if you're patient enough for it to arrive from China. Took mine forever to arrive. >_>
Title: Re: Half-birthday present go?
Post by: MagmarFire on July 28, 2010, 05:11:33 AM
?

Why do you need a new battery? Is there software in the new battery that's required?
Title: Re: Half-birthday present go?
Post by: Twilight Wolf on July 28, 2010, 05:48:40 AM
Yeah, I think it's the battery's built-in firmware or something... Not sure how it works, but it does. Could have been some kind of built-in functionality the developers included for repair purposes. The Pandora battery allows you to boot the PSP in what I guess you could call a Safe Mode, so even many bricked PSPs can be revived by booting them up with a Pandora battery and then flashing new firmware. Thus, even if your CFW-flashing fails, your Pandora battery can save you.
