Title: FFFFFUUUUUUUUU-
Post by: Twilight Wolf on September 07, 2010, 02:56:45 AM
So after finally getting home from my Grandparents' house I discover something horrible:

MY DRIVER'S LICENSE TEST IS TOMORROW.

I thought it was a week from now! I don't feel ready! ;_; (Though honestly, even if I had the extra week, I'd probably feel just as unprepared, even though I do have plenty of driving time and I've driven around where my test should be with no problem.)

So, guys, I need support. Wish me luck and all that jazz. Please? D:

Good luck.  You will probably do fine.

My driving test was really easy.
He didn't make me do any highway driving or anything (which I was most afraid of when I started driving).
I think you'll be fine :)

Good lucks, because I'm going to force, er, hire you to come down here and drive me around.

Since I can't.

Don't worry about it, man. Just do what you always do, and if you fail, hey, you can always retake the test.

Good luck, TW! :D

Thanks for the support, guys!

Sadly, though, I didn't pass. ;_;

I don't think it's all my fault, though -- the instructor was a jerk. Really cold, unfriendly, made no attempt at conversation. The entire test was just awkward silence unless she told me to do something. I was uncomfortable enough as it was having to drive a random stranger around... it totally didn't help.

The test itself wasn't any better. The first thing she had me do was parallel park. I should tell you all now I can't parallel park worth a damn, especially because our van, which is what I took the test in as it was what I'm used to driving, is hard as hell to park and you can't see out of it because of all the blind spots. I was praying I wouldn't have to do it. But... no. Parallel parking was number one on the agenda for some reason. And I butchered it. The space was really small -- just barely bigger than our van. I never touched the cones (they used parking cones instead of real cars, thank God), but I hit the curb with my rear wheel a few times. I knew I had done a horribad job, and I'm positive my instructor wasn't impressed. I tried to poke fun at my lack of parallel parking skill in the car to kind of ease the tension and to show her "Hey, I can't parallel park, but you haven't seen me drive yet!", but all I got in return was cold silence. My confidence was shaken from the get-go and I'm sure it was starting to show. I didn't bother with trying to be friendly after that.

Then we actually went on the road. I'm usually fairly confident behind the wheel and comfortable with driving the van, especially if it's an area I've been around before, but now... Not so much. Yet I did everything as I usually did -- eyes on the road, check my speed now and then, check the cars around me. Things seemed fine for the most part. Not a single comment from her, naturally. Even when I made a left-hand turn from a one-way street onto a two-way street and unintentionally got into the wrong lane. She said nothing. That is, until we drove by the drive-in movie theater, which I had never driven around, and had to make a right turn from the intersection. I stopped at the stop sign, checked for traffic both ways, and, determining that the other traffic was stopped and it was safe, I started onto the road. She screamed at me to stop. I panicked.

"What? WHAT? I stopped at the line!"

"That doesn't matter, they have the right-of-way!"

So apparently traffic fifty feet away that was completely stopped at a red light when I began to pull out has the right-of-way. What idiocy. If she hadn't stopped me I could have pulled safely onto the road long before that traffic got the green light and started this way.

Well, at this point my nerves were shot and it felt like everything I did was wrong. Then we got to the DMV entrance. I had to pull into a center turn lane and into the parking lot. Ugh, I was screwed here. It was either cross the double yellow line to turn into the lot and probably get failed for it or turn into the wrong one of the three lanes and get failed. I turned into the wrong lane. Apparently while I was driving along a slight s-curve I didn't follow it carefully enough, strayed out of my lane, and caused a car next to us to have to move over. LIES. I never left my lane, for one -- I'm always careful about that when I encounter curves like that -- and two, there was no car next to us. Lying a-hole. I couldn't exactly correct her, though -- not only would I have looked disrespectful, if I had I bet she would have said "You didn't see it? You need to pay more attention!"

So now I apparently have to practice for another month before I can retake my test. If she hadn't been so damned picky and had instead been slightly more realistic I'm 100% sure I could have passed that test.

Screw you, Cathy, or whatever your name was.

That sucks.  At least you only have to wait a month before your next test.  I think here you have to wait six months if you fail.  Do you know if you will have the same instructor again when you retake the test?

Ugh, that blows, man. Sorry to hear that. However, there's always next time, and if you keep practicing from now to then, you're bound to iron out a lot of things that you were marked down for. Of course, whether or not they actually exist is kinda up for debate, given the questionable performance of the examiner...

Whoa, was it a standard four-way intersection with a traffic light with your direction greenlit?

I think it's six months down here as well, but I'm not sure.

And you really should complain about the examiner.  The test itself sounds bad enough; the DMV doesn't need to provide soulless monsters examiners to push the test taker over the edge.

Here's a terribly-drawn diagram of the intersection.

Wow. Assuming that the cars were at rest, I guess it's the lawmakers or the examiner who fail physics forever (http://tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pmwiki.php/Main/YouFailPhysicsForever). After all, if they were at rest, you'd be ahead of them anyway, and you'd actually have a lateral velocity if you started moving, to boot; they'd have to be, like, racing to be able to catch up.
