Do we not have a TDC Minecraft Server yet? A quick forum search didn't seem to reveal one. Should I... should I run one? Would people be interested in that? How many of you actually have Minecraft?
The only online-related game I'm playing now is TF2. I'm sure Tach would be interested, though.
I have a server currently but it's kind of terrible, running on a low-RAM computer. If you have a better comp I'd love to have an official TDC server.
My computer might be better, but it's the only one I really have. Hopefully one of these days I'll pick up a computer I can use as a dedicated server for this kind of thing, but for now this is the best I have.
That said, I'll run an official TDC server, but I need to know that enough people are going to use it to make it worthwhile...
Okay...what are the requirements to run it on your computer?
Minecraft should run on just about any set up. The catch is, you have to pay for it. It's not too expensive (about $20), but I wouldn't want to make anyone buy it. :/ Mostly I was interested to see how many TDCers already play the game.
Well, if you'd like to try out my server, the IP is 108.56.150.17
So I have some money in my Paypal, and I was wondering if I should get Minecraft, since my girlfriend doesn't seem to want anything for some weird reason.
Everyone I got a response from on Tumblr says yes. but the friend i go to for all things Online gaming says no.
I don't wanna buy it and end up bored, so like... I dunno.
Can we play together? Should I get it?
Yes.
So I got minecraft.
I can't make the pickaxe. Since I can't get sticks, since I can't get wooden planks. Since I can't cut trees. Since I can't make an axe. Since I can't get sticks.
You see where this is going.
Punch the trees.
So how long do I punch this tree for?
Until the block breaks and it drops a smaller version of itself that you pick up automaticallly.

That should have more than enough information on how to play the game, including a very detailed (and straightforward) guide on how to craft everything in the game. It's wiki setup makes it easy to find out more, too.
I have a server set up, I couldn't resist. I already started building myself a castle :/ I could start it up if you guys want, and leave it running most of the time. I'm looking into finding a desktop for free somewhere so I can just constantly run a server once classes start and I'm in my dorm again.
Let me know if you want the server address. I should probably test it from someone else's computer first...
Sure, give me the address. Assuming you don't want it to be public, PM me. I'll test it out for ya :D
I actually tested it and it works! So, EVERYONE WHO WANTS TO JOIN THE FUN, send me your Minecraft account names so I can put you on the server's whitelist.
Also, I'm working on getting a better domain redirection up, but for now you can access the server at desertcraft.dyndns.org... provided you're on the whitelist, of course. :P
My username is, shocker, Tacheonblack. Whitelist, plox! :D
I'm Chuckinator0
My computer can barely run MC and on High Performance my computer overheats, so...
I'll try to play with you guys eventually.
Aha sorry guys, I've been out all day. I'll add you two to the whitelist now and then throw the server up for the night.
We'll have to figure out an efficient way to run the server, since it does require quite a bit of ram. I'm still looking into a computer I can dedicate to the service, but for now I'm using my main to run it. I have enough RAM, but I'd rather not be running it constantly.
I'll probably iron out some time frames for now. I'll think about it over the weekend.
Needs moar people
Yeah that would be nice :(
It's thunderstorming on the server AND NONE OF YOU ARE THERE TO SEE IT
It might be a couple weeks before I can get my desktop up and running again to play Minecraft. My laptop's not too great at it.
The server is temporarily down because I went home for a visit, and for some reason my desktop here absolutely hates the one USB drive I backed the server up to. So... yeah. I'll see about getting it up.
EDIT::: Server is back up.
Sorry about the crater right in front of the spawn shelter. Creepers would not stop gathering right in front of it. Ended up having a chain reaction of 3 Creepers go off.
We need more people to be on this server. :( I'm making a large castle and town for hardly anyone...
:< I'm trying to get on whenever I can, man. If you want, I know one or two folks that would be happy to play on your server. They're not TDC folks, but they're fun to get along with and one of them is from another Zelda site.
I ended up paving over the crater with a deck, but having a crater there gives me an idea.
Would anyone be opposed to me making a lava moat or regular moat outside the safe house?
Sounds good to me.
I've been working on the server today. The CraftBukkit mod is installed, with plugins for world editing, zone creation/protection, and locking chests. I'm going to keep looking into plugins; I wanted to do an economy one, but the permissions plugin it required was annoying.
Did you guys ever officially kill the rule against double posts? Oh well.
I've been working on permissions, and I've got them down pretty solidly so that the mods won't let just anyone do anything.
Also, I'm thinking about installing a mod that will let me change the spawn point so it's outside my castle. Since it's so far away. ;) And there's so much room within my realm's walls for building houses. AND since beds let you decide where you want to spawn anyways, I figure it couldn't hurt. Opinions?
Sounds like a good plan! I look forward to seeing your updated castle... not sure when I'll be free to play, however.
Heh, well I just added the portcullis to my castle... and a four-block-high wall on the inside of my moat. There's a little mini-gate near where the minecart stops now, and a drawbridge made with pistons and gravel that comes up from under the water. Also some... castle secrets. ::)

It's still in effect, but double posts are allowed if you're posting a relevent update. At least I think that's the general, unwritten consensus. Perhaps we should make that official?
As for Minecraft so I'm still on topic....I'm still not quite sure what it is. Is it something like LittleBigPlanet, but more blockier?
Well HNS, it's a little bit like LBP, but you don't make games or anything like that. It's more like playing with virtual LEGO, really. You deal only with cubes and, occasionally, some more complicated cubes. You also have tools that you must use to harvest cubes so you can place them somewhere else.
This is silly but, yeah, that's basically what it is. Playing with virtual LEGO, where you have "unlimited" LEGO bricks, but you have to harvest them first.
Also, I'm putting the server back up. I just have to reset the spawn point first.
Excellent news: I now have a desktop dedicated to running our Minecraft server! And it only cost me $5. :-\
Also: We have a few new players, some friends of mine. Only two more but, hey.
Also also: I'm looking into a plugin that will allow server-side authentication. What this means is that you guys can play on our server for free! I have to look into the way the plugin works, and it may not be possible after all, but it SHOULD be, so... maybe you can try before you buy, at least.
Heh scratch that, too sketch. I couldn't find a cracked exe I'd trust, so I won't let you guys use it either. Sorry, you'll just have to buy this awesome game that is totally worth it.
Hey all...
SO, I tried to get a public IP from my university, but they wouldn't give me one for a game server, so... the Minecraft server is down for now. The good news is I'm in the process of setting up my old desktop at home to be the new server. This is harder than you'd think, because I actually have to call my dad and ask him to do a lot for me that I can't do remotely (like opening ports) and otherwise fight with an installation of Linux that had some... complications.
However, the server is tentatively up and running... I just have to transfer the files from our previous server over. I can always run an inter-university server with the desktop I bought for $5 anyways. ;)
I hate to quadruple-post, but the server is up-and-running again, so, have at it guys.
Hey guys, I haven't been playing much, been sorta creeped out.
I was playing offline trying to bash down a tree a while ago to get some wood for the darn pickaxe and right at the end of my line of vision, in the fog, was something else. It didn't look like a skeleton or a Creeper, but it was there.
Any idea what it was? I mean, I've gone around long enough in the game to know that the only other things in an offline game that look like people are creepers and skeletons...
It's got me sorta freaked out since it just stands there and watches, then moves away when I try and get closer.
Honestly, I'm afraid to play. :P

Lol, this guy obviously knew how to play.., but yeah, that's about how it happened. I got creeped out of the dude just watching and quit.
I'm being entirely serious, I hope you know that.
The "Enderman" (http://www.minecraftwiki.net/wiki/Enderman). Your worst fears have been realized, Inigo.
So I've merged the TDC server with the server I was running for the marching band here at Rice. Hopefully this will mean more people on the server, which is good because I'm also running it on a better machine now. Everything that existed on the server before is still there, I just added a few people from the band to the whitelist.
TIME TO MAKE NEW FRIENDS.
yaaaaaaay friends
