Title: What it is to be a Nerd
Post by: Deku on September 22, 2011, 10:07:56 AM
I think my ex girlfriend has some serious misconceptions about what it is to be a nerd.

The other day she invited me to go to the mall with her and her new friend. She said he was a total nerd, and that I should embrace him with my nerdiness.

So we find the guy, and we get introductions out of the way. This is how the conversation went:

* * *
ZV: "So are you psyched for Skyrim?"

Him: "For what?"

ZV: "Skyrim, Elder Scrolls..."

Him: "What's Elder Scrolls, a computer game? I don't really play MMO's."

ZV: (http://i644.photobucket.com/albums/uu167/ciprusm/Meme/pokerface.gif)

*Turns to look at ex*

ZV: "You said this guy was nerdy..."

Her: "He plays video games!"

*Looks back at him

Him: "I play like FPS's."

ZV: "Everyone plays FPS's."

Him: "Yeah..."

. . .

*Turns back to ex*

ZV: "What you have here isn't a nerd. It's actually just your average american teenager."

Her: "I guess..."

* * *

So I opened my nerdy arms to the kid, and now he thinks I'm a dork. Thanks a lot ex. However, no I have to ask you. What exactly do you think separates the nerds from the rest?

To me, a nerd MUST know the name Elder Scrolls. You don't have to have played any of the games, just KNOW WHAT THE HECK IT IS.

A nerd knows that after the purchase of a brand new title that he or she has been waiting for, they should also make a stop at the nearest store to stock up on snacks and drinks, because it's going to be a long night.

A nerd WILL attend a midnight release for their favorite titles, no questions asked.

A nerd WILL listen to other nerds' nerdy game and movie suggestions, and broaden their gaming/movie horizons so that when the topic comes up later, they can hold their own in a very nerdy debate.

Nerds love debate.

And finally, a nerd will know the difference between a fellow nerd (http://itongmuntingmundo.files.wordpress.com/2011/09/nerd.jpg), and a dweeb (http://www.pollsb.com/photos/o/35194-nintendo_nerd.jpg).

That is what a nerd is to me.

I think that sounds like a very reasonable summation of nerddom

Nerds openly embrace their nerdiness, and often do things largely because they think it's rather nerdy.

Or something like that.

Pfft. A true nerd would just go home and play the game, regardless of how empty his/her stomach is and how filled his/her bladder is. :P

^^^^^^^^

That.

And no one is really a nerd unless they can quote The Princess Bride. It's sorta become a staple of nerdiness.

I have the Giant "EVERYBODY MOVE!" quote in my head now. Thanks a lot, Shoe. >:|

Well, ZV, now I understand why she's your ex in the first place.

She's implying that anyone who plays video games is a nerd. I would've broken up with anyone who thinks that.

But that's just me.  ::)
