Does anyone NOT know what SOPA and PIPA are? I'm wondering how his whole mess will turn out...
I am at least 60% sure that neither bill will pass, considering the massive unpopularity they have with the public.
I'm not really worried about it, either; rather, I'm quite excited to see so many people on the Internet coming together for a common purpose. Besides, if they do pass, we all know there's going to be hell to pay and the legislators who allow it to pass will be out of a job faster than you can say, "lolwut."
Of course, the ESA, who, in a sense, represents the gaming community, is supporting SOPA. Revered gaming sites all over the Web are suggesting we boycott E3 to protest. As much as it pains me to sacrifice the time of year that's perhaps the most-looked-forward-to for me...I think I agree.

It excites me too :)
I always figured my generation to be too lazy or high to actually be a part of a revolution. But take something like the internet, and plunge all we know of it into uncertainty, and you can be darn well sure these kids will say something about it. I feel like our freedom of speech is being impeded upon here, and I have to say that out of all my rights as a US citizen, that's one of the biggies.
Darn straight! And it looks like they're listening. It's not over yet, but the bills are currently shelved for "study" time.
Quick, everyone! We need to elect representatives that actually know about the Internet. Jon, if you could explain for me, please. (http://www.thedailyshow.com/watch/wed-january-18-2012/ko-computer)

Or representatives that don't want to step all over free speech.
Apparently, the Obama Adminstration opposes SOPA, so even if Congress is stupid and passes the act, Obama can still veto it. And really, how often does Congress override the President's veto? If I remember correctly, it's a rare occurence.

Very rare, actually. Only 110 presidential vetoes have been overriden by Congress in our nation's history.

Makes sense. Supporting SOPA could severely impede his chances of being reelected.
I don't believe SOPA will pass. 90% of everything nowadays is all about the internet. And this bill will affect people on a global scale, so it would probably start an international incident. There are seven billion people out there, and a few harmless flakes working together can unleash an avalanche of destruction.
But a lot of our representatives are clearly too shortsighted to realize that. I think I have an idea of what's partially at work here, aside from ignorance... (http://tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pmwiki.php/Main/NewMediaAreEvil)

How sad is it that this actually seems to be true?
The scariest part is that they don't need ANY kind of permittance or clearance to be able to take down a website. There are no checks and balances here- if they want a site taken down, they don't need to consult anyone, they can just do it. This means that if someone has one crazy bone in their body, they can take down the entire internet. THAT kind of freaks me out a little bit. I mean I'm sure nobody would do that, but should the bill pass, the possibility is there.
No, I doubt anyone would take down the entire Internet (partially due to the fact that there are simply way too many sites for that; you'd be bound to miss at least a few), but I can tell you with almost 100% confidence that it would take down the parts of the Internet that we care about the most, which might as well be the same thing.
TDC wouldn't be immune, either.
Indeed, fansites would be the first sites to die.
But fortunately, the bill was pulled today (I think). We may rest easy for a while.

Good night, sweet prince. 2005-2011.
I thought they got a new domain name.
SOPA and PIPA have been "postponed?" Yes!

I recently heard the news myself :)
That's quite a relief. I suppose it's more like "The Imprisoned" now. A temporary solution to a future problem. Whatever the case, I'm just grateful to hear some good news on the subject.

Nope, the website has been seized by the Federal Government and the founder has supposedly been jailed.
Also, SOPA and PIPA were just the beginning. You should check out ACTA.
I'm not that worried about ACTA right now, I don't think. It's a trade agreement, and doesn't that mean it'll require some kind of appointed body to enforce its laws? Isn't that just a little bit hard to do here when there are multiple keepers of the terms?

...Then what the crap is the point of even trying to pass legislation of SOPA and PIPA if they can already exercise power to do that kind of stuff anyway!?

SOPA would allow them to sue foreign-based websites that pirate American material. There are other reasons, of course, but that's the big'un.
Really? I thought it would only allow suing of domestic sites that engage in piracy and force ISPs to "merely" block foreign sites that infringe. ...I'm not even sure if international lawsuits even exist, and if they do, aren't they between country-specific branches of the participating companies?

Quoted for truth.
It's true, Maggs. It's kind of like, "Well who put the United States in charge of the internet?"
The United States did. ::)
Well, the Internet did originate in the U.S., so in a way, that makes sense.
...But then by that logic, the Chinese should be in charge of ice cream and fireworks and gunpowder.
Not sure if you guys heard of the new bill going through Congress, feared by many to be SOPA's second wind: CISPA.
Get some more toilet paper...

Oh Congress, why do you do this?
Because even though SOPA may be dead, the people who tried to push it through still have their same jobs and there's too much money for them at stake for them to NOT keep trying until some mutation of it passes.
This is why we can't have nice things.

I say that all the time :P
Also, it doesn't surprise me. I never for a moment figured that they'd just give up.
I don't think anyone did, and for that matter, I don't think that it's very advantageous for them to push it at this time. The anger toward SOPA and Congress in general still hasn't been quelled, or at least I wouldn't think so, especially with talk about ACTA up and about just a few weeks ago.
The entire ordeal in general has pretty much become memetic in nature. The citizens of the Internet may be a forgetful bunch regarding their own culture, but really, you can bet your bucket that, if it's something that threatens the integrity of the Internet as a medium as we know it, no one's going to forget about it any time soon.
Oh, they've got another thing coming if they think we're just going to sit idly by.
Is it just me, or does it seem like politicians want to halt progress and start going backwards? Didn't one of the Rebulicans running in the primaries want to take women rights back to the 1950's?
It's stuff like that that makes me not want to pay attention to politics.
Which also explains why I didn't hear of that before, haha. ...'Course, I sincerely doubt anyone's going to win by alienating about 50% of the market share of votes.
Or less. I dunno the exact statistics.
Fact: very few politicians care about the people they're supposed to represent. They're given too much money by other interests to care. That's why things like SOPA happen.
I am a registered Republican, but I greatly dislike both of the candidates it looks like I'll been forced to choose between. My first election will be SO FUN.
And people wonder why the voting apathy rate is so high. :P
That isn't apathy. Apathy is not caring.
I care. I just don't like my options. That's not gonna stop me from voting, but it won't feel good either way. I'm just gonna have to find out what will feel the LEAST bad.
No, a significant portion of that is definitely apathy. I'm not saying there aren't people who care (if that were the case, we'd be much worse off than we are now), but I'm pretty sure that this combined with the common feeling of one vote being insignificant really is the reason it's so high. I know that's the reason for me, so I guarantee I'm not the only one.

Agreed. (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Dx18cwzPggk)
I think this is the first election where my family has hated both leading candidates. At this point, I'd rather Obama be re-elected for a second term.
