Here I'll post teasers and sneak peaks from the development of HA2.
Firstly, I was working out the map for the initial world of the game map. How many main locations were there in HA1? Like 40? Well, in total, HA2 has 11 territories (more on that later) with a grand total of 259 locations throughout the "world" as it will appear upon launch. Remember how I said Hyrule would be more like a world in HA2? I meant it!
Now as for the images, each location will be represented using small 250x160px "screens" that are made of BSZelda-style graphics. Well, as a teaser, here is the Great Crossroads as shown by the 8 screens that make it up.

So, you guys see where I am going with this?
I'll be posting the official V1 Rules Set tonight, I hope. I'm working on them as I type this.
Sugoi! As a friend of mine said once, "Hooga hooga hooga hooga hooga hooga hooga hooga!"
This looks fantastic... I love the plainly Zelda-style graphics and sprites, it really swallows you into the world of Hyrule :). And speaking of the size of the world, I feel like we're comparing Zelda 2005 to OOT again ^^. Oh, and now the "click on a rock to reveal a hidden passageway" thing makes a lot more sense... I can just imagine you having one out of some 64 graveyards hiding some dark secret or something. Old man from the old south road says to look at the certain one east of... XD I'm getting carried away.
I totally appreciate the work you're doing, Jack... can't wait, really! This will be awesome--already is. *lifts glass* Here's to a second adventure in Hyrule!
Sounds great Jack. Thanks for putting in all this work. We really appreciate it!
I'm with Korind on this,
QuoteHere's to a second adventure in Hyrule!
Hell yeah!
QuoteSugoi! As a friend of mine said once, "Hooga hooga hooga hooga hooga hooga hooga hooga!"
Alrighty then... Sounds like a plan!
This is awesome, can't wait! Hope I am not too busy when this comes out, cause I am going to want to have a lot of time to play it. I love it. Excellent work, Jack!
Hey guys, want to see North Castle in action (er, kinda)? Check out http://www.desertcolossus.com/adventures/ (http://www.desertcolossus.com.adventures/) to see the first big location of HA2. You can see the foundations of what I'm doing, a few of the mechanics, and if you feel so inclined, create your character and profile in advance.
The whole game is still about two weeks off from being done, if I'm lucky, so enjoy this snippet as Ha2 evolves from that starting point.
I am not getting anything. Did you type it all in correctly, or is my computer?
Woops, typo! http://www.desertcolossus.com/adventures/ (http://www.desertcolossus.com/adventures/) Try that.
Beautiful. I am eager to start anew. It looks so much like the old one... but better.
My username is different from my characters name, what should I use in Travelerss Hostel?
Character's name.
Definately cool, Jack! I'm set up(barring any last-minute changes of heart), and I'm glad you kept a resemblant look to HA. Very stylish. You have me itching for this to start again, it's gonna be so cool. Just need to think of his story, and get some RP'ing thought of and I'll be more than ready.
One question/thought: is it possible to keep the new areas hidden until they are officially unvealed, or will they be available as they are added?
I know in HA, there was a slight problem with people(mainly me... I know) posting in too newly opened places(before they were supposed too).
I removed the feature where you could see the latest posts that others made via their profiles. So, I've at least made it much harder for people to nose where they shouldn't. :P
I echo our Master Goron on this one. The resemblance to HA is certainly nostalgic--brings back memories that make it hard to forget the "old'n days" though ^^. Course an unmistakable darker hue of tan is there. But all in all, I'm excited to begin! Awesome work as usual.
QuoteOne question/thought: is it possible to keep the new areas hidden until they are officially unvealed, or will they be available as they are added?
I think what MG means is, "While you (Narrator) are adding these new areas to Hyrule (sort of in this little beta/alpha of the game), can you possibly hide them until opening day (Grand Opening)?" Right? I think we're also wondering about that one idea MG mentioned before, too--with half of the people starting in North Hyrule and half in South Hyrule of sorts. Then a big event drawing us all together a couple weeks into the game? Are we still going to do this (that is, people who would like to do it)?
QuoteI removed the feature where you could see the latest posts that others made via their profiles.
Nooo! I'm... ignorant now! :) Guess that it's a change for the better. Although--I won't try to hide from you (resistance is futile!), but I think that... this can be gotten around. I mentioned something about this in the Keep, once...
Oh, and one question from me! Basically, I'm noticing that everyone seems to be getting around North Castle pretty easily (they're posting... somewhere!). But how? It might be a problem that only I have. This is what I find in the topic, "Important: Traveling Within the Castle":
Quote<img src="images/signpost.gif" align="left">The signpost in front of you points
the way around the Castle's grounds.
<a href="viewforum.php?f=1">Castle Courtyard</a>
<a href="viewforum.php?f=3">Town Square</a>
<a href="viewforum.php?f=4">Temple Quarter</a>
<a href="viewforum.php?f=5">Caravan Quarter</a>
<a href="viewforum.php?f=6">Castle Keep</a>
There is also a small note attached to the sign reminding you that only Royal Guards may enter the Keep and only members of the Goro-Goro Cartel can enter the Caravan Quarter.
I have doubts that everyone's just finding their ways around by changing the web address in the Address bar ^^. Any idea why all of my links (even links to pictures) come out as script? Your help is appreciated!

Quick solution... REGISTER! ;D
Wow, thanks a million ><. I seriously had not thought of that one. I guess I was holding off for... something. Maybe my username? I was wondering if I should make it the same as my character name to avoid confusion, but... bah! People will learn *grin*.
Edit: Another question for the Narrator--do you think you could change "Restricted" (i.e. in the Quartermaster) to "Restricted to" and/or "classes/races that cannot use"? Because in the Rulebook, "Restricted:" denotes who can't use the item/skill, but in the Quartermaster it sounds more like "Restricted to". Thanks!
I can do that "Restricted" thing.
And as for the hop around business, I'll be adding some script so that if you view a page outside the frames it kicks you back to frames. So, no cheating!
I know how tempting it will be with such a huge world, and the whole "taking a few minutes to actually reach a town now" change.
Oh, last two points:
(1) The bad news... looks like that split start won't be occuring. The hurdles with the system are too hard to leap over (specifically creating a parallel start and not having southern hyrule... though this is more like central Hyrule, being the mid-tier item area). If its really that big of a desire on all your parts, then I'll try to find a work around, but I'll be able to get HA2 out a lot quicker without it.
(2) The "good" news... I'm not done with the interface, and I'll be adding several features on the side--specifically: a "Farore's Wind" to transport you to North Castle, a small map of the world, a link to the Rules Set, your inventory, and a few more things.
QuoteAnd as for the hop around business, I'll be adding some script so that if you view a page outside the frames it kicks you back to frames. So, no cheating!
Ack, no copying and pasting of links? I actually had (still have) a Hyrule Adventures folder of bookmarks in my IE... with 16 major locations of Hyrule, so I could get just about anywhere in like 3 clicks ;D. Will this be a no-no with HA2?
Also... I think I didn't hint enough at the 'method' I chanced on in HA1, and still sorta works now. Has to do with... (here's my leet speek XD): "Suurch dawt pee-aych-pee" (yeah, anyone can figure that one out, true).
Bwahaha, the fix is in. I've doomed you all to frames... DOOMED.
And I'm turning search.php in a smoldering crater, so that will soon be a no-no as well.
EDIT: Woops, seems my first fix killed two birds with one stone. :o
Though, thank you for the honesty, it'll make for a better game.
You're welcome. I don't think I have any fight left in me now ^___^. Now all I have to do is resist the urge to pore through the source code to... uh, figure out stuff :D. Thanks for your efforts to make this a great game (if I happen across something that could be taken advantage of, I'll let you know)!
One thing about search.php, though... once I figured it out, I used the asterik in the search field almost exclusively... while bad for the world-feel, I never missed a thread ever again (yay?)! This was especially handy for fulfilling mod duties, I must admit. And for everyone else, the upside of search.php was that threads in obscure places were much less likely to die away and never be found, (of course one could always OOC plug it somewhere visible (like NCC)).
I guess as long as you have a way of keeping an eye on every thread in the land, we're ok?
PS. And now we have to give newbs directions instead of just sending them to "viewtopic.php?t=48794"! XD Bugger (don't worry about me, I'm just being dramatic)!
It'll make things harder, but the benefits I see are twofold in how it promotes real-world feel:
1. It will, as you say, force directions to be used, so you actually have to travel the world to go somewhere. Won't it be great when you just start and you have no idea how exactly to get from point A to point B? Keep in mind the trip from NC to Rauru will take about 8 clicks or so if you know the quickest path. From NC to Ruto about 14. This'll make the caravans and ferries very crucial and worth achieving a pass to use.
2. The fact that you can't just start a thread out in the Hinterlands and expect it to get some passerby traffic promotes a real world feel in that it'll compell people to converge in the cities and towns to get matters together.
The only problem with that is that a lot of Hyrule may go unexplored for that reason. Maybe if there were those clicky things more often out there, maybe you could find hidden items... I think quests should be out there too, that way people have to explore, but it would be best if you said where they were.
Wouldn't it be cool if there was a quest and you put it in one of those clicky things, and we had to find it to get to go? I think it would, as long as people don't start telling everyone where it is.
Also, you do know the compass in Hyrule Fields(f28) is turned 90 degrees clockwise, right?
I'm assuming "who's online" has been gunned down then too, right? That was another good way to skip around to places, I'll miss it. :'(
QuoteThe only problem with that is that a lot of Hyrule may go unexplored for that reason.
I agree... some people thought that Hyrule
1 was confusing--although the world map thingie helped a lot. Any chance that we'll get a world map for this one (probably not)? Maybe we can get it if we complete a quest, a la Mayor of Ruto's trophy? Ooh! Maybe we could get a bland, unmarked/unlabled map, and with the completion of a second quest, get a compass which shows us landmarks and things, in the style of OOT dungeons (probably other dungeons, too). Just an idea.
Quoteas long as people don't start telling everyone where it is.
Well... I think I'd tell people where things were (e.g. if I needed help), especially if it was in character... Depends, though. It would mess some things up, of course--good point.
One thing that I'll miss because of the frames is opening in new windows (for IE). Often I like one window on "reply to thread" and another on the thread itself, especially for fast-paced quests. And maybe another window zeroed in on a thread somewhere else. But I guess I'll make up for it with good'ol Notepad.exe :D.
QuoteMaybe we could get a bland, unmarked/unlabled map,
That would be cool, I like that alot.
QuoteI think I'd tell people where things were... especially if it was in character
I was trying to say that we could have a quest where Narrator would say something like: "There will be a quest going on this Saturday. You must find the location to enter the quest. The only hint you get is that it is in Northern Hyrule. Good luck." IC, the person could say they knew it was in N. Hyrule, but they did not have the exact location.
I have a feeling people would PM each other and say where it was, therefore making the point it was not revealed useless. And it would therefore be OOC.
Quoteif I needed help
I have no problem with the helping of other people, my point was that it would eliminate the quests specialty. Especially since Narrator pulling all the tricks out of the game...
Ah don't worry the overworld will be populated with scores of hidden quests, items, and shops just waiting to be discovered. For example, you could be walking and discover a tree with a staircase cut into its trunk. Heading inside will find a business scrub willing to sell an item available in town for considerably cheaper than you could purchase otherwise.
THe reason the compass is turned on its side is because the bridge extends west across the lake but on the image it points up. The compass will rotate to always point which direction you are facing.
There will be a map on the side of the screen, but it will be unmarked. But, you should be able to figure out based on your surroundings and the territory where you are.
I'll also have signposts all around pointing out the way to the nearest town/point of interest.
I can assure you the overworld will not be empty, but will be filled with tons of great content. Also, there may be a few spots that go into the underworld (which WILL be joining East Hyrule, South Hyrule, and Death Mountain Area as one of the four big expansions at some point).
If I were to say where a quest was to start I would put it in a familiar spot (like Tantari Rock, the Windmill, the Lighthouse, etc).
QuoteI have a feeling people would PM each other and say where it was, therefore making the point it was not revealed useless.
Ah, I see what you mean.... I was confused earlier. But you're right, a lot of being in character would have to be on an honor basis. Not necessarily telling everyone everything would make things much more realistic too--if you were passing by and saw moblins attacking a man, you really were passing by! Good thought!
Quotemy point was that it would eliminate the quests specialty.
True! But then we might occasionally just have some small quests (party of 3-4)? Maybe Narrator might have "A man with thick stubble on his face staggers into the pub. 'Foul winds north of Rauru,' he chuckles, before ordering himself a pint." A few people might uncover this precise "foul wind," and they'd get to go on the quest. Maybe they'd bring along their close friends, too. ("Hey Shiva, want to go check it out?" "I'm always up for something like that, Korind--you know me!") I guess these would be some rare, hidden opportunities (events/quests) to get TP that only some would have the knowledge to take advantage of? Awesomely realistic stuff, in more ways than one: 1) Only some would find it 2) They'd only need to tell a couple people, like their buds--character relations to the max! (unless it was a huge undertaking, which then probably wouldn't be a small, secret quest) 3) TP would be more randomized this way... (as long as people don't maliciously keep things from each other to hoard TP, but I doubt anyone would do that, especially if it didn't fit character).
Could this be a possibility, Jack? Maybe a subtle, subtle clue in some tavern (or maybe a scrawled word on a wall [danger--
E.ruto!) that would lead to a very deeply hidden quest somewhere (so hidden that it might not be found at all). Maybe out of the way, two/three clicks off the main road; click an arrangement of bushes and find a travelling scribe under attack by many stalchildren. The quester tells a friend or two or three about this (OOC PM); the troupe would then (IC) have all arrived there together (as if they all chanced on this scribe when going on a hike together). They'd complete the simple quest by 1) defeating the enemies in the immediate area, then 2) assist the scribe by escorting him to a location where he could uncover more data, and receive a TP each for their efforts ("The scribe cups his hands in solemn thanks. As the duo turns to leave, he coughs, "wait!" The man trots up to them and hands each person a small scroll.")
Simple, short, hidden quests for small, inquisitive groups? Is this sorta what you meant by
Quotescores of hidden quests, items, and shops just waiting to be discovered.
? I really like the business scrub idea; an adventurer might be able to nudge their friend with a "I found this one shady character that can really give you a deal on that Bow that you wanted" and then give them general directions via PM. This would definitely involve more character relations... ^_^ whoo!
QuoteThere will be a map on the side of the screen, but it will be unmarked.
Hooray! The HA1 map was really helpful when I first joined.
Just wanted to ask and figure would do it here since I have not seen it yet. About how much longer till the game is actually up?
It's taking a lot longer than I thought (the world, that is) sicne there's a lot of tedious, repetitve work involved in making each location. I could be done in by the end of next week if everyone was willing to start off with just the Hyrule north of the North-South Pass and Old South Road. I'd roll out the next part after an event unlocking it.
I do not mind starting with just North-South Pass and Old South Road. I just want the game to start.
Same here.
Me,too...
Fine by me. I havent seen Waddles in a while, but ill get him back too.
Since there are no objections, I'll set that as my first goal. Look for it to be done by this weekend if all goes according to plan.
Sounds good to me! Also sounds like time for me to get cracking on my character... *goes nuts* ^^
Same here I got to get some final cuts on Rugger, make his different from the Rugger in HA1, but not too different ;D
yeah speaking of vast lands, when the hell will the lower half be opened??? I WANT TO GO TO SARIA TOWN!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Wow. Talk about resurrecting an old topic... ::)
ZV, we've been waiting for Southern Hyrule to open up for a long time. I would like to imagine that Master Goron and Shadowlink13 have been working on it since they became mods, but I really have no idea what they've been up to lately, other than MG's Event...which has also faltered and fallen away... :(
If either MG or SL read this, have you guys got any updates on the state of HA2? I'm also really curious about what you guys have been up to in the past several months.
If I was a mod, I would bust my butt! lol! you here that SL AND MG? lol
Even before we can get there, we'll still need to kill the Ghoma in the North-South Passage, which will probably be an event all on its own. The only other way is through the blocked off Old South Road. Unless the Megaton Hammer is going to be found in Parapa Palace, I doubt we're going to be unblocking either passages anytime soon.
Ah yes... an old thread.
Well, I think it's only fair to impart a little sneak peek (or not so sneak peek) information ^^. I might be able to speak a bit on this topic, on the part of MG and SL...
South Hyrule:
While I can't say that the Keep has been working day and night on this, I can't say that absolutely no work has gone into it, either ^^. Do note that the bottom half of Hyrule covers everything up to Saria town, and includes the central parts like Midoro, which will take a lot of time, since some amount of correspondence has to go on between the Keep and Narrator, as well as the mods/admins getting used to the software and working out HTML bugs.
As Blank mentioned, yes, there will be two ways (at first) to get into South Hyrule: the North/South Pass and the Old South Road. One requires defeating Ghoma (which indeed will be an Event as far as I know), the other involves finding the Megaton Hammer.
So there're still some bridges to cross before we make it southward, but until then we still have the Parapa Palace to complete. Oh, and some other things and developments have been discussed, so I wouldn't be surprised if there are some non-event announcements to come ^^.
Yep.
Bump!, Anyone?
Anyway, I feel like a jerk for bothering you guys with all these questions about the south, but this is a Sneak Preview thread. Are there any previews available?
The reason South Hyrule isn't getting done is because of FTP problems. Both Kamikazi and I have tried to upload the content for South Hyrule but to no avail. I could upload some of the images on a free-hosting site so you can see some.
I have been so far away from HA2 that I hardly know what is going on anymore. It would be a lot easier (and more fun) if we didn't have this problem we have.
If it's a problem to show a preview, don't worry about it. There's no point in wasting your time showing off something when you're busy trying to get the thing working.
You were in charge of getting Parapa Desert in to the game, too, right? I take it there were no errors of this degree with that one.
Right. It worked like a charm.
Well, I wouldn't say it was to no avail! The files definitely uploaded just fine. They were just seriously messed up. Probably something in the coding. I wouldn't know, since I'm not exactly an HTML/PHP master or anything. But anyways, yeah, the files uploaded just fine...
I say you should just check out the files one more time, SL13. I mean, I hardly know anything about HTML or PHP, but I have coded other things before and I've gotta say that it seems like it's those little tiny miniscule mistakes that cause hours of mental stress. But maybe that's just me...
Oh, good, so it did upload! Now I remember. There is just something about the html pages not updating. I know little of PHP myself other than the few basics Jack told me.
Also, KP, check out the thread I made in the keep about South Hyrule.
And since it turns out that at least the image files are on the site, I will post all the pictures of Old South Road.

Woah... wait a minute... those aren't the ones they should be... I messed up initially and didn't follow the world map so I had to do them over again. These are the messed up ones. I had to change a few of them to fit the map correctly.
Well... Wow... For messed up ones, they still look great!
One of them don't work.
That's just a minuscule portion of the entire bottom half of Hyrule. I'm so excited again!
Now if only MG's Event would progress. Phantompig had me under the impression it would last a month or so at the most, but that was six months ago ;D I doubt that Parapa Palace's sacred treasure is the Hammer, so I'm expecting another Event to follow before you guys can unveil your project.
I'm just too anxious!
Quote from: Whocares on July 15, 2006, 01:19:46 PM
One of them don't work.
Yeah, I can see that.
I should probably get the others done and ready to go even if we are having trouble with them. I think the problem might be caused by the worm protection on Norton Anti-Virus... I've been hearing things about how that and firewalls make it hard to upload stuff.
I mostly can't wait for some of the quests that'll occur in the South. As it is, I have 27 Talent Points worth of Talents planned out in advance.
What would you say the percentage of completion is at this point?[/annoying-curiosity]
20% I'm kind of embarrased to say. I think once we get passed the FTP problems I will give any staff member who wants access to the program we use to make the maps so it can get done lightning quick.
Kamakazi, I sent you the files for the part I have done, again. I also CC'ed Jack, so if you can't get them on there, he almost certainly will.
I finished uploading everything. This time I checked to make sure that the gifs that looked the same actually were the same, so hopefully everything will be fine now...
Grr... this is making me mad. Nothing happened. Well, hopefully Jack gets the message. Did you refresh and everything?
What is it that's wrong, exactly? :-\
It shouldn't say "Old south road is an old road that leads south. ;) " for one thing. I fixed the compass directions so you should be able to move freely around in the OSR section.
Well... looking at the html files you sent me, it looks like Old South Road files 3-13 are all the same as OSR file 1...
Quote from: Darth Wyndisis on July 17, 2006, 01:20:13 PM
Whoa, wait.......... My bad. (Let's hope.)
I sent you some again and I hope they work.
I checked the files, and they're definitely different. I uploaded them and everything, so... does it work?
No... you must have the same problem I do. Jack seems to be our last hope.
But... it doesn't make sense. I checked the files on the server itself to see if they were correct, and they were! It just doesn't make sense... :'(
Same thing happened to me. I don't understand what is going on. This case merits a giant WTF???!
It's a conspiracy against us. ::)
But, honestly, I tried everything. What do you use, SmartFTP? Because that's what I used, but I could always try another one...
Don't bother, I've tried three and none of them work. Leech FTP did on my old computer.
Eh, I'll try it anyways. Can't hurt. Although, it really doesn't make any sense. Maybe everything was somehow moved to another location with different FTP login info, and we've just been uploading into nothingness? :o
I don't think. If we were then we wouldn't see all the pages that are already up there when we log in. You know what I am trying to say?
True... Well, the other FTP didn't work, either, so I guess we're stuck until Jack uses his magical powers to fix it.
Jack, if there were ever a time to have magical powers, it's now.
psht...victor... I TOLD YOU JACK HAS THE MAGICAL POWERS.....either that or a really large 20 sided die....i want one...
well, i hope you two solve that problem...either that or invoke the mighty awesomeness of jack's magical twenty sided die...
okay, that's enough for me...i believe this is borderline spam...
Well, I don't mind that it's only a fifth of the way to completion. I'm just glad to see you guys are working furiously at it.
I feel like I should give you guys money ;D
feeling and doing are two VERY different things Blank...you could give me the money...for one thing...I don't live in your country and i can completely ignore paying you back...that's all the reason you need to give me money, right? right? right?
Well, now that all my burning questions about the South have been answered, what about New Peaktop and the Underworld? Do you guys have any plans for those brewing?
Jack successfully uploaded OSR with the compass directions. They are a little screwy, but I will tweak them and he can overwrite those html files when I give him the rest of South Hyrule to upload.
Edit: Here. (http://desertcolossus.com/adventures/viewforum.php?f=102)
Edit again: It doesn't work. But you can catch a quick glimpse of it before it refreshes to the main page.
Well, Jack, it looks like your Political Science degree finally paid off! :P
You know, I've realized that we're going to have a lot of fun with River, Graveyard, Swamp and Mountainous areas. The Highlands are fine, but what really excites me is Death Mountain ;D
I must say that Death Mountain excites me as well, partialy since it still holds unknowns for me. That is, we hadn't gotten through all of it back when HA1 crashed, so I still feel like it's...
...waiting...
For me. Although, I'm already cringing at the idea of walking all the way from NCC to Death mountain, and then trying to traverse through the confusing mazes of it.
Then again, realize that the Keep is the one who needs to build those confusing mazes. *grin*
