General Discussion / Sword Art Online

I might have a new anime in my top three favorites, guys. Gurren Lagann's still on top, but...dang. This anime freaking rules. Extremely clever and thought-provoking plot, believable characters, well-done romance when you think about the fridge horror and empathize, game terms thrown around, and so much more.

WATCH IT. You can find it on Hulu for free. WATCH IT.

And then return here to continue gushing about it. ...But of course, be judicious about spoilers. That is, don't spoil it. Meaning, don't spoil me, because I'm not done with it yet.

SO DON'T DO IT. BUT STILL WATCH IT. NAOUGWH!!!

I think we need to replace KP as the sole administrator.

His growing tendency to not reply to our requests for fixes in a timely manner is growing more and more troublesome as our desire for more activity and freshness at the desert continues to increase.

Actually, let me rephrase my proposition: We shouldn't replace KP as the administrator; we need more administrators. That is, we need a team of people to keep the back end of the site accountable in the event that another administrator can't keep up the slack. This would also give us the opportunity to make more changes to the site in a shorter amount of time without depending on a single facilitator.

KP, buddy, we love you, but we need more people to pick up the slack for when you're not around. We know you're busy. We're all busy. That's why we need more people on the team.

Please, give us FTP and database access and let us help you with maintenance and content management. I may not be available all the time myself, but I can certainly code. Heck, it's what I do at my job. Alpha can code, too, I'm sure; and I think Tayro wouldn't mind helping, either.

So please, KP.

I'm a witness here, since he walked over to the Engineering Building while we were in the middle of CSE 435 and was basically going bonkers.

Weeks ago, I co-developed a game project for my game design class, and lately, the team's expressing interest in submitting it for Unity Awards 2012 or something. Note that this is also the project that, in one fell swoop, killed any and all pride I've had for it after I got my peer reviews. I've strongly considered just taking my name off the credits, and I actually did do so on the submission form, but...should I really do that?

Honestly, this is just some passive-aggressive way of my pessimistically saying, "Sorry I was ever on the team," so I know you'll probably say I shouldn't, but at the same time, it doesn't do me any emotional good being reminded that I spent so much work on this project and possibly sacrificed a good deal of my GPA to work on it, only to find out that I was essentially the LVP in the end.

So regardless, what do you guys think? (If you're curious, you can download the game here.)

General Discussion / Symphony of the Goddesses

I'm pretty sure most of us couldn't make it to the 25th anniversary concerts in Los Angeles and London. I feel just as bad as you do about that. Could there be a way to redeem ourselves of our self-misblaming for not being there for our series during those concerts? Well, there is...

Thaaaaaaaat's right, folks! Brought to you from the guys responsible for the Play! video game symphony tours, the Symphony of the Goddesses will be touring the US and Canada this year. One of the concerts is already sold out, sadly, so make sure you find the one closest to you and GET YOUR TICKETS ASAP!

General Zelda / The Zelda Timeline...FINALLY REVEALED!?
December 22, 2011, 10:33:02 PM
In ordinary events, this would be a trolling statement by any member not in the know of Nintendo's secrecy.

This is not an ordinary event.

Nintendo recently released a 200+-page art book called Hyrule Historia (Japan only, of course >_> ) to finish off the 25th-anniversary milestone celebration, and what could be inside it but a Zelda timeline?

You heard me, folks. A. Zelda. Timeline. In an official Nintendo product. By Nintendo.

A timeline with a third split after Ocarina of Time that leads into A Link to the Past and the NES games.

Zelda! How many times must you blow my mind this year!?

Am I seriously the only one who's obsessing over it? -_-;

This is one of the driving forces of how I think Skyward Sword's story is among the absolute best in the franchise (perhaps moreso than Majora's Mask, even, and that's saying a whole friggin' lot). It was an excellent way to establish a dynamic between the two, and aside from it being a very satisfying source of fluff--which, as I'm a romantic myself, I can't get enough of when I'm in the "zone" of it all--it was a major source of motivation to actually go out and track her down, for both Link and for me.

One of my minor complaints about Spirit Tracks was the lack having an overarching story hook that made you want to know more, because, as I said before, a lot of the backstory and all that was already told. That isn't to say I thought the story was bad; far from it. It's just that I felt they told a substantial amount of their story at the beginning, and there wasn't as much left for the player as a reward for completing all of these challenges.

It's interesting because Skyward Sword did something very similar in its beginning. It told a distant-past story of some big bad getting sealed away, staging the setting. The clincher here is that there was much more after this. We find out more about Skyloft; about our characters; about the Master Sword; and frankly, about the entire franchise as a whole. As good as even Twilight Princess and--dare I say it?--Majora's Mask were, their stories didn't shake up the overarching story of the franchise (but obviously, the latter was amazing in particular). This story does. Oh, dear Goddesses, does it ever.

And the game took me there with the hope that Link and Zelda could have another special moment together to tug at my heartstrings. ...And, of course, to find out what the heck she's been doing while I've been trying to track her down, but still.

This is how a Zelda story like this, or perhaps any romantically-rooted story, should be made. It should be made as a foundation for the characters involved, not as a shoehorned feature just to keep the shippers happy. And in general, the story should be made with major events being told in chunks with there being some compelling goal for both Link and the player in order to keep them wanting for more. With a pairing as adorable as these two, how could I not want to risk fictional life and limb to reunite them?

That said, what do you guys think of the pairing? As you can tell, I feel they pulled it off magnificently. You could say it fills my heart with rainbows, as it were. I can't be the only one here who loves the interaction between these two. I really can't.

Prove it so, for my sake.

More like thirteen days, but you get the point.

Skyward Sword is almost out, and like most Zelda fans, we're probably doing some odd things to keep our hunger satiated until the game's out. So, what are you guys doing to pass the time?

Something hit me today when I was at work--something kind of depressing. Princess Celestia may be a prankster, but deep down, she must have one sucky life.

Think about it. Her sister turned on her after she was left comparatively shunned and unappreciated by the masses and, thus, went off to try to cast the world in eternal night. Celestia, as much as the disagreement must've pained her, couldn't allow it; so she sealed her up in the moon for a thousand years, after which she takes up her sister's duty to raise the moon. Sounds about right so far, right?

Well, remember, she's been doing this for one thousand years. She's more-or-less a goddess, and with her important task, she's more-or-less immortal. As hinted at in the series, though, this is not so for everypony else. Obviously, this means that she'll outlive all of her subjects--and yes, eventually, this means that Twilight, Pinkie, Rainbow Dash, Rarity, Apple Jack, Spike--all of 'em and more!--will die. It's all in one cruel cycle: She watches over them all, sees them discover who they really are for themselves, sees them live their lives, have fillies of their own, and then...die. Rinse and repeat. During that millennium without her sister, who was it that she had to confide in, relate with on a more-personal level, and deal with the pain of loss? Aside from her pet phoenix, no one.

Yeah, it's possible that she may have always known that Luna would come back to her senses eventually (the prophecies-always-being-right thing not needing to be mentioned, possibly), but what if, deep down, she didn't and that it was just an idealistic leap of faith? It's bad however way you look at it, as it didn't prevent the fact that, for one thousand years, she must've lost a lot of friends to time, and it's not like she could talk to her sister, or just about anyone, about it and know someone who understands and possibly feels that pain, as well.

She may be a troll, but man, it's completely justified if it helped keep her from terminal despair.

(I came up with this with the assumption that Celestia cannot "access" those in the afterlife, so this may have been a moot theory all along. It's still darn depressing if you think about it that way, though.)

I'm sure you've heard of my desire to play The Last Story over the past year, and you may have not heard anything about it since then. Well, it seems Nintendo is trying to keep it, as well as Xenoblade Chronicles and Pandora's Tower, under wraps. I don't know about you, but enough is enough. I still love Nintendo, obviously, but even my patience has its limits when there are games to be played. Many people and I have had enough.

Enter Operation Rainfall, stage left.

Yes, this is a large petition movement that has its own Wikipedia page. Also, the same movement managed to get Xenoblade to #1 on Amazon's preorder sales four days ago, and I even heard that it caused a whopping 150000%+ increase in preorders. (Yes, it's over nine thousand. ;) ) I don't know about you, but I sincerely hope that you want to help us get these games over here.

So what do you say? Are you in?

By the way, there are no ponies. That was a lie.

For those of you unwilling to dish out money to get it, you can now get it! Sweet! Now I can see what all the fuss is about.

Well, too bad, because this is a place to get anger. Read this. Warning: language.

Please tell me they're only trolls. Please.

EDIT: OOooooooooohhhhhhhhh, man, these people are ticking me off...! DX I would so love to see an Internet retaliation there...

Just now, JDog sent me something really interesting. No, it's not about the Web site (hopefully). Check this out!

What could this mean? Could the Zelda series finally be going online to a greater extent than was seen in Phantom Hourglass and the Stellaview?

I don't know about you, but I'm hyped for this.
