It also tends to ruin games that way.

My friend lost a portal game that way... it's a shame! Though the xbox wasn't affected at all-I was playing GTA IV on it a few weeks ago.

Indeed it would. The newer ones, however, have greatly improved reliability and are much less likely to Red Ring.

Just keep checking around and do your research. You may yet find a relatively affordable 360.

Hmm, that sounds more like a HDD error than anything... To my knowledge, the Ring of Doom really only affects the console itself, not the hard drive. Eh, but what do I know? I don't have a 360, so I very well might be wrong.
