A topic about films under feature length (which would be about an hour). While any film under an hour long can be talked about here, you are encouraged to concentrate on those around thirty minutes or less.

While many of you would probably moan at the fact that you are not watching some two-hour, special-effects dominated, high-budget blockbuster, you will be suprised on just how good short films are. If anything, they have an advantage over the feature length in that they can have just as much entertainment without having to drag it on for hours and hours, lessening the impact of the film.

Why, just today I saw Chris Marker's La Jetee, a 1962 masterpiece French short film. It tells the story of a post-nuclear war prisoner being sent to the past (and eventually the future) in order to gather food for the camp that captured him, and how an event in his childhood past haunts him even today.

Another masterpiece is Maya Deren's Meshes of the Afternoon. Meshes is a surrealistic 14 minute short film from 1943 that iconically repeats the same sequences and shows us the same images throughout the story in order to add to the confusion, complimented by Deren herself floating around throughout the film.

Also worth watching is Buster Keaton's hilarious comedy Sherlock, Jr., a fantasy about a movie projectionist who falls asleep on the camera and enters the screen into the story as Sherlock Jr., the world's greatest detective. Who could forget Keaton at the pool table or driving a car into a lake?
