That's what I did with my Wizzrobe costume. However, I felt a bit neglected because of it; no one knew who I was (and those who did... well, I'm a wizzrobe, so they stayed away XD) and so... yeah. I've always wanted to like... be social in costume, I'm not sure why. My entire attitude changes on the costume.

(In my Wizzrobe costume, I giggled a lot.)

Seriously, though, go with owlbear.  You can't go wrong with owlbears.

But I think there's a prop size limit in A-Kon/Shimakon/Oni-Con. Even if there isn't... I think the mask/headdress would be bashed in from the doorframes, so..
