She isn't really helpless always, she usually ends up saving YOU at the end by shooting light arrows.

Can Zelda really help it if villians tend to target her?  Don't try blaming a pink dress and her heritage for the trouble she occasionally gets in.  Besides, she may be good with magic, but that doesn't mean someone better won't come along.  So what if she needs saving?  As I recall, quite a lot of people in the Zelda series need saving.

In OoT you had to save Malon and Talon from Ingo, even though it wasn't required. You tried to save the Deku Tree, and every game you have to save pretty much all of Hyrule...
