I figured it was about time that a topic be made for 'The Master of Suspense.' I got inspired to make it earlier today when I was out looking for a new jacket when, while goofing off by looking through the DVD collection, I found a twenty-movie box set of early Hitchcock films (in this case "early" means prior to making his American debut with the Oscar-winning Rebecca) that was ONLY FIVE DOLLARS! It wasn't even used, either!

Twenty movies for 5 dollars. Sometimes a single movie can cost twenty-five dollars. This is beyond enjoyable; this is a film buff's dream.

So, anyway, I guess my own favorite Hitchcock film has got to be Rear Window, which follows a injured professional photographer stuck in his house for months until recovery (played excellently by James Stewart) who spends his time spying on his neighbors, initially just to pass time, but then begins to grow somewhat obsessed with his voyeurist hobby. So do we, too.

What I wonder is how dull your life must be when 'goofing off' means looking at DVDs.

I kid, just struck me as odd.

Anywhoooo, yeah, he kind of changed the entire industry. A lot of movies are influenced by his films, even if they don't realize it. The shower scene in Psycho, for instance.

That's what it means to be a true classic, when you're influencing dozens of films that don't even realize it. Without Hitchcock, the modern day horror genre wouldn't even exist, thrillers would be lackluster and too down-to-earth, and we wouldn't be so suspicious of blondes.

Also, an interesting fact; the same year Hitch made Psycho, Michael Powell, another famous British director, would make another horror film called Peeping Tom, which is an eerily similar plot about another voyeur, with a tramatic childhood caused by his parents, who enjoys killing women, though the twist here is that, while Norman Bates killed women dressed as his mother because of his troubled personality, this murderer films his victims while they are being killed.

It's not anywhere near as famous, though I found it to be somewhat better, really, particularily in how it relates filmmaking with voyeurism.
