The priestess and the restless [A fanfic]

The cold wind pierced the Rito girl's lungs as she held to the steel bars of his cell. A lightning iluminated the pitch dark scene in front of her; a fight had just ended, the victor held his weight on his sword, nearly unable to keep his balance.

"Link..." the Rito said. The hero looked at her, his face covered in sweat and mud, though not blood, for his enemy did not bleed, not since many years ago.

Link approached her cell, dragging his sword behind him, his gasps being silenced by the strong wind. He collapsed in front of the bars, stopping his fall with a weak grasp. Karina laid her hand on Link's forehead, which was resting against the cold steel.

"Link... I'm sorry I had to drag you into this" she leaned until both of their foreheads were touching.

"However, I need to ask you one more selfish favor" as she said this, Link remained silent.

"I need the treasure that lies deep within the mausoleum of my people; however, I will need yor strength combined with my knowledge as a priestess to get there" Karina reached for a small glass bottle roughly the size of her thumb, it was full of a red liquid.
"This is not much, but it will help you regain your strength" she slowly helped Link drink the substance, then she put the bottle away (it was the last dose she had). She waited, one, two, ten seconds; she heard Link mumbling.

"Good" she said, smiling weakly; Link stood, Karina realized how tall he actually was, he stood a whole foot above her. Link had sharp eyes, reflecting a will of fire.

"I need you to break me free from my prison, but your strength alone won't be enough, you'll need the strength of the undead guardian" another lightning pierced through the sky. A perplexed Link looked back to the place where the slain foe laid still. Karina felt that he already knew what she was talking about.

"The guard you just defeated was one of the ancient guards that fended the intruders from the mausoleum. Whoever casted the curse on the Tree of Passing must surely have tricked him into trapping me and attacking you; his soul is therefore restless" as she said this, Link slowly looked away from the guard and slowly into her red eyes.

"Link, do you remember the Song of Healing?" Link, hesitant at first, searched his tunic, then took the blue instrument.

"I will help you bring peace to his soul, so he can lend his strength to us" Karina herself took a small flute, and they both started playing. It was a sad tune, yet it laid to rest the spirits of those who heard it.

Slowly, the wind calmed, until it completely stopped. A spectral voice was heard, coming from nowhere but everywhere, it simply said "I am sorry". A lightning struck close to Link, without harming him, both Karina and the hero's hearts were pounding deeply, for the remains of the ancient warrior were, all that was left was a mask.

Link lifted the mask, it depicted a face covered in vandages, all except for the sharp-as-a-saber teeth and a blood red pupil floating in a black eyeball. He was hesitant, it had been years since he had worn such masks. Link took a deep breath and turned the mask around.

"Be careful," Karina spoke again "that was a tortured soul, who knows what will happen to yours once you meld into one" she tried to sound calm, but truth is that she was scared of what Link was about to become.

A piercing cry filled the scene; Karin saw in horror how the vandages in the mask started to extend all around Link's body, consuming him completely in a violet aura. A blinding flash forced the Rito to close her eyes for an instant, when she opened them again, the new Link was there.

Standing 7 feet tall, yet hunched under his weight, he was there. Just like the mask, a red glowing pupil was the only visible eye, other than that, his sharp teeth showed under the vandages. Completely black hair sprouted irregularly from his head. A few pieces of armor hanging from his left shoulder and his waist, as well as a red and torned cape covering him. The hunched figure used a gigantic blade (roughly the size of its bearer) to support his weight.

He started to approach Karina, breathing heavily at every step. The priestess couldn't help to unconsciously take a step backwards as she gasped in fear of the new Link that approached her. He started to lift his sword over his shoulder, growling slightly at every new step he took closer. He stopped, a few steps away from the cage, the wind whistling again at full force. The blade stood still at its highest point over Link's head, and he swung, Karina cried in terror.

The bars of the caged broke into pieces, easily being torn apart by the zanbatou. Karina saw, curled up in one corner of her cage, how Link, having dropped his blade, was struggling to rip the mask from his being. The same purple flash then surged from the core of his body.

Link was there, standing, as pale as the full moon, trembling and covered in sweat. His knees about to fail, Karina caught him before he could fall. She held him, tight against her chest, while she sobbed softly. She passed her fingers various times through his again golden hair, as silent tears flowed from the girl's eyes.

"I'm sorry, I'm sorry, I'm sorry. I'm sorry I used this way, please Link, forgive me, please forgive me" she said, finally breaking completely into tears. Both youths stood there, at the entrance of the graveyard, at the end which awaited the mausoleum of the Rito.

"Will you be able to ever forgive me?" asked Karina, still sobbing. Link answered by weakly grabbing her priestess robes, and he mumbled a weak response.

"Lets... go..."

OOC: Will I continue this, no, you can think whatever you want of what happens either before or after this story, the fact is that I just wanted to make a story about an undead mask (and the horrible consequences of fusing with an undead guy that likes to hump strangers), so there you go.
I may consider writing about other masks if inspiration strikes me, but I can't really guarantee that (I can't guarantee that the fics will be related either).

P.S. Yes, I was writing this when I could have very well drawn the comic, sue me!

That was great!

It reminded me of Bleach (the relationship between Ichigo and his [Spoilers!] Hollow form)

Hey, I never thought of that paralelism, though I might have had it in mind unconsciously.
BTW, in speaking about the in-game mechanics of the mask:
-Your speed is severely diminished
-Your strength greatly increased
-You have a paralizing scream that works for as long as you have magic
-You lose half a heart every 5 seconds (explaining Link's drain of energy)
-Your ultimate attack is the release of several scarabs that surround your body (just like Mikau's electrical field)
-Objects far away enough are blurred
-Your sword can do stuff like a Darknut's in the WW
EDIT: His instrument is a harmonica (because he needs to play with just one hand)
