Toshiba announced today, that they would be dropping the HD DVD line, thus ending the format war.  Blu-Ray is the official next gen video player.

Rev Rabies

Just because they dropped it doesn't mean it's dead, just means they arent going to make the players anymore, the dvds will still be made, and the thing noone realizes is blu ray and HD are the same thing.

BaconWarrior

But soon, most likely, the DVD will meet the same fate as the VHS and become obselete and will be discontinued making Blu-ray dominate.  Whereas blu-ray shall evetually share their fate as will all others after it as technology advances.

Rev Rabies

blu ray discs are no different then HD dvds, except how they are read, and they take a hell of a lot more money to produce, for only a tiny bit better quality IF THAT.

Apparently Rev, you haven't been around the internet today.  Being sick and having nothing better to do, I have.  It's effectively done.  Not official, but more or less.

If you had done your homework, you would know that Toshiba was one of the last supporters of HD DVD.  And for them to drop their support, it would probably be the last nail in the coffin for HD DVD.

They cost essentially exactly the same amount of money to produce. And since Blu-ray is superior, if only marginally so, then I think it should be fairly obvious what the correct answer is. Seems the consumers answered correctly.

And yeah, HD DVD is basically dead, Dr.

DW

...But Blu-ray players are so expensive...We can't afford to...*sigh*....

BaconWarrior

If you have a PS3 then you can play blu-rays, but if and when HD-DVDs become obselete so will their players making blu-rays morecommon meaning the price will go down.

DW

Because PS3's are so cheap...Anyways...I'm really wondering why they would abandon HD-DVD.

BaconWarrior

Hmm.... good question.  It may be because blu-ray has better graphics?

Commodore Axilon

Most of the major studios have chosen Blu-ray over HD DVD, and Blu-ray is selling quite a bit more. It was over and they knew it.

BaconWarrior

This makes sense, with higher sales why not choose blu-ray over HD-DVD?

darkphantomime

I doubt DVD will be obselete for another 5-8 years. If it turns out I'm wrong... well, I'm not sure if the Blu-Ray players have DVD playback or not.

BaconWarrior

I dont think it does of course i may be wrong I use a PS3 to play my blu-rays so Ive never really got to mess around with an actual blu-ray player.

Gamefreak

This is just an assumption.

My PS3 can play PS2 games.  Since PS2 games are in DVD format, then my PS3 can play DVD's.

Also, PS3 is probably the best way to go for a Blu-Ray, seeing as how you get a Blu-Ray player as well as a game system.
