Because in the early days of 16 and 32 bit gaming.  Nintendo and Sega were two of the fiercest competetors for the console market.  But Sega lost it's hold on the industry when Sony entered the fray.

No, Sega doesn't do consoles anymore.  They bombed on the Dreamcast and now they just make games.

Doubt it.  Sega does produce most of their games on the Nintendo systems now.
