What if they never really went, extinct,like a few survivors went into some kind of hibernation.

I mean thinkmabout it: the cycle of avatars goes through all the elements. Air is one of them, so after 3 more avatars the another airbender wil be born. but how can an airbender be born when there are supposedly none left? i think there are still a few and if there arent then the air element will be eliminated from the avatar cycle.
