Well, here are the characters I know, Jiraiya and Itachi aren't included:

Kakashi:  B class ninja, he leads the squad that including Naruto. He likes toying with them and reading books.

Naruto: A go-getter, he doesn't think and is the dumbest in his class, yet knows many advanced moves. The nine- tailled fox demons sleeps inside him.

Sakura: The smartest in class, she has a crush on Sasuke, but Naruto likes her. Her ninja skills are above average.

Sasuke: A bored person, he iss the strongest ninja in class and all the girls like him. He likes little things, and he dreams of restoring his clan.

Rock Lee: A strong ninja, he has no magical abilities (called jutsu), yet he's as fast as lightning. He dreams of proving his skill to everyone.

Shino: He usually does nothing at all. He's a member of a special clan that controls insects. Under his skin are many crawling bugs.

Neji: A member of a strong clan, he's not a member of the main branch. He wants to become the sole heir to the throne, and is willing to kill to do it.

Gaara: Like Naruto, Gaara has aa inner-demon He is evil and has the sole intension of killing those who want to kill him. He can control sand with his demon.

Shikamararu: I know little about him, but from what I gathered, he trys to know everything, but isn't the best ninja. He's very good, though.

Hinata: The shy cousin of Neji, she has a crush on Naruto and is a member of the main branch. She trains hard, but messes up easily on missions.

I've been watching it the past week or so, and so far, my favorite character is Kakashi, and that's who I got.

Oh, by the way, here's a refined profile of Shikamaru:
Lazy, whiiny, and inteligent, he has the ability to control his shadow. He can morph it with someone else's, and his movements are his opponent's too. He's becoming a good friend with Naruto.
