Hi no Seijin

So, ZV, when I tell you that you shouldn't post pictures that insult the Special Olympics, you'll apologize and take the picture down, but when I tell you that you shouldn't post pictures that insult people with Down Syndrome, you're going to tell me to lighten up?  You do realize who competes in the Special Olympics, right?

ZV, seriously, don't **** around with me on this.  My oldest sister, Naomi, has Down Syndrome and is on the swim team for the Special Olympics, my mom participates in the Polar Plunge every year to raise awareness for Down Syndrome and the Special Olympics, and my other sister, Juliann, went to college to teach Special Education.  I may not do as much as them, and I may not be as patient as my mom and Juliann, but I'm not going to sit back and let people insult Naomi, not even my friends.

Perhaps it is possible that the person in the picture does not actually have Down Syndrome, and is merely a ****.

That one is unfair.  A sympton of Down Syndrome is mental retardation, but they're not that stupid; far from it.  That picture looks Photoshopped to me, and the real idiot here is the moron who Photoshopped it; I'm guessing s/he never spent time around someone with Down Syndrome.  They are very often a joy to be around, especially if you have more than your fair share of patience, and when they want something they work just as hard as anyone else to get it.  Granted, I do get frustrated with my sister, who has Down Syndrome herself, but I cannot honestly call her an idiot, and you can bet your *** I will call someone on that ****.  There is nothing wrong with people with Down Syndrome, and the world would be a hell of a better place to live in if we all shared their positive attitudes.

Whoa, dude, that's not what I meant. Had I known that's what the guy in the picture has, I wouldn't have said that. As it stands, however, I did not, and I assumed that it was merely a random Internet picture like the Star Wars Kid doing his thing--you know, a random kid making a random, goofy face to make people laugh. People make pictures like that on the Internet. Sorry if it offended you.

Still, in my defense, I fail to see how what I said could be interpreted as an attack. What I said was more of a joke that potato was a really huge number that someone could actually count to rather than sheer sarcasm. Like a Chuck Norris joke, if you will. Can he really count to infinity? Yes, he can. No. Do people still joke about it? Yes. Does it drive mathematicians crazy? Probably, but that's irrelevant. What I'm saying is that I felt my joke to be of a similar nature to a Chuck Norris joke and ran with it.

Granted, it was an awful joke, but it most certainly was not an attack. Really, HnS, just who the hell do you think I am? Remember what I myself have. One would think that you'd think I, of all people, would be aware of it.

tl;dr Sorry if you didn't interpret it in the same way I did. :/

Oh, yes, I'm going to live with a sister who has Down Syndrome for 22 years and not know the physical characteristics that come with it.  Not only that, but I think I recognize him and the guy in the blue shirt in the background as Naomi's teammates.

And sorry I grouped in you there, Mags; I forgot about what you have.  I just saw the joke, and my brain skipped thinking about it and went right into defensive mode.

It's the internet; if you laugh at AIDS jokes only to rage at mental retardation jokes simply because it affects you or someone you know, then you are a hypocrite.  Just because I make racist jokes does not mean I am racist.  Just because someone makes a poster with something you care about and a sarcastic caption does not mean they hate you and are attacking you personally.  This is the internet.

If you're taking it seriously, you're doing it wrong.

Hi no Seijin

I'm sorry I don't think that pic crosses the line twice, but if you're going to make fun of someone with Down Syndrome, don't call or imply that they're stupid.

Nah, don't worry about it, brah. ;D I really wasn't all that mad about it.

Still, sorry about the misunderstanding.
