Uchiha was actually meant to sound like "uchiwa" (the Japanese word for paper fans), and there is little that seperates how they sound. And I think the name was taken when Uchiwa joined. (Licky)

The Uchiwa is also the symbol for the Uchiha clan.  The uchiwa is a fan meant to spread flames, I think, which also explains the Uchiha Clan's prowess in fire style jutsu.
