What are your views on this rather unique design?Good thing, bad thing, OMG what the heck is that thing. Let your views be known.

When I first saw it I thought is was a remote control. At the moment I am kind of struck by the simplicity of it and wonder how easy it will be to play games with it.

One thing you can say about Nintendo is they know how to surprise people.

weienw

My WORD! You're right about surprise... no wonder Nintendo said that they didn't want to show it off at E3, so the ideas wouldn't get stolen (they mentioned vibration packs on controllers and stuff). So it looks like the tip of the thumb controls the arrows, the base hits the big A, the index triggers the B, and... haven't the foggiest about the 2 on the bottom? I think the extension, with the joystick, reminds me a bit of the... innovativeness of the N64 controller (the design for the joystick's surface certainly is familiar).

I wonder how the wirelessness will work... what kind of battery, etc?

I'm shocked and amazed, though. Thanks for tipping us off, Red.

Oh my god!!!! What have they done. I'm to use to playing a game with both hands. I don't want to have the feeling of watching t.v as I play. How could they suddenly make a one handed controller? Every system they have made is two handed. There is a difference between inovation and insanity.

That said, I am not going to buy the system until I hear some fan reviews on how it handles.

(muttering)Damn stupid remote control game controller thingy. >:(

Phantom, you plug in an attachment that is an analog stick, perfectly emulating a regular controller.

I like it, especially the fact that it itself controls the camera with the pointer. I'm just worried that it'll scare away lots of third party support, since it takes extra work to port it over and with less buttons performing the same actions, it will be awkward.

I hope the d-pad can perform game related tasks to add more options. I think it has a lot of potential, but will underperform because it is so different from what we've seen before.

Aw, admit it, you like the idea of the nunchaku feel for the attachment, though? ^_^

Edit: MG beat me to it by a minute or two.

phantompig

No, thats what I don't like. When playing with the N64 or any system my hands were closely together and they were able to rest their fingers on the button but with this you can't put one controller down because you would a)not be able to move or b)not be able to press the buttons. Look how the guy is holding both controllers. Doesn't it look awkward?

I'm not as good as expressing my opinions through words but I hope you understand what I'm trying to say.

zeldafreak1997

i think that i'll never get used to it. LOOK AT IT! i me yeah takeing a step in to the future is great but, im not sure about this. its cool, but i wouldnt wanna use it for zelda.

Jack

Looks interesting, though terrifying. I'm assuming that there is a deep well of genius in its simplicity, and therefore I thik I'll give Nintendo the benefit of the doubt. (Plus the pointer thing is pretty cool).

Pickles

Wow, it looks like it'll be hard to get used to. But I'm always willing to try new things, so yeah. I think it'll be a good step up for Nintendo.

kamakaziplumber

I trust Nintendo. They always seem to make things work, no matter how different. When you think about it, just imagine how we all felt about the N64 controller. It was different, but we still got used to it. It should work the same way this time around, too. Besides, Nintendo has too much running on this new system to mess it up with the controller. It'll be fine.
The Fourth! A webcomic about the hopeless case of the game villain.

"Tis music that soothes the savage beast, but the dagger that causes long slumbers."

Darth Sauron

It's crazy, it's scary, and I can't wait to try it out.

For Nintendo, yes, it'll be perfect, but what about other companies? Big-time games'll easily be left off the revolution(enough didn't make it to the GC, we don't need to lose any more...).

Phantom, what would keep you from holding your hands together? Also, I don't know how you hold a controller, but if it's like most people I know, it rests in your lap. Therefore you could let go of one side just as if it were a normal controller. Pick it up and play. Trust me, the controller will work perfectly fine. Actually let me rephrase that: It will work perfect. It will be so easy to use.

I'll give some good examples:

The Wind Waker- The pointer would allow you to actually conduct the songs.
Animal Crossing- Fishing, designing, so many applications.
Elder Scrolls- I think adventure, FPS, and flying/racing games willl all feel really natural on it.

Here's a bad example:

Sports- The lack of buttons will hurt, they'll be playable, but they'll feel different. Alot different.

Edit- According to an IGN article Nintendo has stated that the pointer can plug into a more traditional controller attachment to make it more accessably when you need more buttons.

Q: What does the conventional controller cradle/shell do?

A: This add-on makes it possible to play Revolution games in a more traditional manner. The shell is designed to look and function like accepted "regular" controllers, such as the Wave Bird. After its bottom casing is removed, the Revolution's free-hand-style remote is inserted into a gap in the middle of the controller shell. Gamers can then use the shell as they would a traditional controller, with a notable difference: the pointer remote's sensory functionality remains active. As a result, gamers get the best of both worlds: more buttons and two analog sticks along with motion-sensing operations. In a Revolution version of Madden Football, gamers might be able to use the combo to control players with the shell's analog sticks and execute pinpoint passes with the pointer's improved accuracy.

It won't scare away third-party support. There's also going to be an add-on that resembles a GC controller (if I remember correctly). You don't believe you can play SNES and N64 games on that controller, do you? ;)

Besides, like with the DS we will most likely see a LOT of exclusive third-party games. Several third party companies have already expressed excitement about the new controllers. And it's already old news that Square are impressed with the Revo, so we might expect a lot of exclusive games from them.

Vampire

Huh. At least now I can snack easier while playing...

My friend told me about this conference video of the control and I think it will answer a few questions relevant to the revolution control. It has raised my confidence in nintendo and I think it should be in this topic.

If you have a crappy computer like me it's going to take a long time to load but you should check it out any way.
