My, my, what sucky grammar we have

We certainly didn't have cars that efficient 20 years ago, or 40 years ago. But because we were going through a gas crisis, Jimmy Carter passed laws so that Detroit would make smaller and more fuel-efficient cars.

Even a really small car could potentially get better mileage than some hybrids of today, though that difference is pretty small.

And there are definitely cars that are much more efficient than Toyota's Prius.

Honda is a Japanese brand, though. And as a matter of fact, the Honda Accord, specifically, became really popular because it was not only fuel-efficient, it was higher-quality than the fuel-efficient American cars of the time. It's been a long-standing tradition for Honda, and probably other Japanese manufacturers, to create cars that are as high-quality and reliable as possible. The quality of the American cars at the time was deteriorating due to cost-cutting in designing the cars.
